* Xin Jiang style lamb specialist *
Richmond Public Market has another winner! I love this food court. Xian cuisine (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) is a favourite for their rou jia mo (Xian style meat sandwich), and this place very nearby is another favourite for their Xin Jiang style cuisine.
You have to just smile at the simple names for the food stalls here. Basically they take the region they are from, and add a phrase like "cuisine" or "delicious food." Not big on marketing - which you can see pretty clearly if you check out Xin Jiang Delicious Food's website.
But I much prefer places like this that offer unique and well executed dishes, rather than a spot that markets subpar cooking nicely and dresses it up. Given the choice, I will always take food quality over market packaging!
This stall specializes in lamb dishes. My favourite is the yang rou jia nang.
It is a freshly made Xin Jiang style nan (made with sesame seeds, a nice not too crispy crust and a fluffy centre) stuffed with cumin and chili flavoured lamb. This is an amazing dish. The seasoning of the lamb combines with the freshly made bread to make this something I crave often. It is also very reasonably priced at just about $5.75 for a decent sized serving (enough for me for lunch).
They have an incredible variety of things like:
- BBQ lamb flank
- Lamb bone soup
- Lamb tripe soup
- Capsicum lamb liver
- BBQ lamb buns
- Handcut lamb noodle soup
- Braised lamb chops
- and of course Xin Jiang style BBQ lamb skewers with the distinctive chili and cumin flavour
Honestly the lamb skewers at The Place (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) are a bit better for my taste (juicier). But these are a very good rendition as well.
But the yang rou jia nang is a winner, and one that will keep me returning over and over again!
Oh, and it is halal, if that matters for you.
