Picture this: it's a weekday night and you have absolutely NO desire to cook. To make matters worse, you only have $6 in your wallet. What are your options? Fast food value meal? Gross. Subway? Boring. Pizza? Sick of it. Chicken souvlaki or steak or grilled salmon dinner? Now THAT's more like it.

At a measly $5.95 a pop, the prices for the Monday-Thursday dinner specials are jaw-dropping. Sure, the meal comes with a lot of inexpensive, carb-rich sides (rice, roasted potatoes and green salad), but even if you shun the majority of the sides they still give you enough food to fill you up. Don't feel like having the daily special? No problem. I've never seen an item on the menu for more than $10. Even the beer is only a couple of bucks. To top it off, every time I've been there the food has been great, and since I lived a few blocks away for several years, I've been there a lot!

During the week, the place can get super busy at dinnertime so be prepared for a bit of a wait. Given the quality of the meals, I'd say it's worth it.

Cash-strapped university students, and cash-strapped student-loan paying former university students: your dinner is served.

I've been here many times for lunch with a friend of mine. The food is cheap cause we always get the special lunch. It's around 8.00. The portions are huge. but it's like pub food.
It's pretty dim inside and it's run by asian.
    Nothing special about it.
Don't get the potatoes cause I believe they use bleach. It tastes funny.

Only one more night and then I'm complete...

I used to come here a long, long time ago and it's still the same. My re-getting to know X-Site is due to my frugal friends... and my cheapness as well. When I heard that the Shoppers on Gilmore and Hastings was closing, we rushed up to North Burnaby like our bungholes were on fire. Cheap stuff I need, I am there... unfortunately, I don't think they were that desperado to get rid of things I needed like soap and sunscreen, so we decided to be cheap for dinner instead.

    Monday-Steak
    Tuesday-Burger
    Wednesday-Chicken Souvlaki
Thursday-Salmon (no, I am not going to eat cooked salmon... not really my thing)

So far, I have been there on Steak Night and twice on Burger Night, each time starting with the really tender Calamari. To get the deal, you have to buy a drink. A pop will suffice. If you are looking for fries, move along, because that isn't an option as a side. Instead, a non-descript salad and three halves of roasted potatoes with sour cream. I feel like I am eating at someone's house, like an auntie. It's not gourmet, but it's good.

They try really hard to accomodate everyone... sit on the other side of the fence or you will be cold (well, in the seasons other than summer) from the door constantly opening. Service has been good... food has been fast... No one giving us the evil eye trying to get us to leave so they can seat more people.

X-Site Grill & Bistro is a great place to go for good food and good drinks.  The service here is always great with very friendly staff.  The food is also quite tasty but usually high in carbs.  Basically it is all very nice pub food.  If you are into this kind of food you will like this restaurant.  The real selling point for this place though is its specials.  Lunch specials are amazingly cheap with a great selection of different types of food.  The lunch special is only $4.95 per dish and it is very filling!  The dinner prices are also very cheap with a steak dinner being only $9.95!!  They also have really good drink specials.

If you are looking for a good pub to eat as this is a place you should check out!  It is often busy though as the prices are so good.  If you live in the area or go to SFU check this place out you will not be dissapointed!

Oy- yes, super cheap ... but, I'll say that "super cheapness" is not the variable I most need in a restaurant, at this point in my life, so I do have that bias.

That said- we went there to watch the Canucks last night, and the place smelled of old salmon and mold.  It was drafty (doors open to deal with smell?) and kind of like hanging in a decommissioned cannery.

Won't go there again- yes, big portions and cheap booze, but the smell made me pretty nauseous.

Looks like from Billy L. that there's been an ownership change.  Perhaps the place is changing from "cool dive" to "dive"?

Hasn't changed much since I stopped working/'studying' at SFU.  I guess it's not really a 'college pub' per se but cheap food/drinks definitely attracts that crowd and some families as well.

Food is alright... it's really cheap for the quality and portions you're getting.  Not to say it's good food - but pretty decent and far better than most of the cheap pubs around Granville.  And there is always a drink special.  It's like a independent knockoff of Cactus Club - decor and type of food is pretty similar - but cheaper and service is more amateurish.

So why only 3 stars?  Maybe I'm just an old fart - BUT BACK IN MY DAY... SFU had the best 'college bar' in the world.

    Not the overpriced Highland Pub.
Not the Mountain Shadow and its' infinite darkness.
Not all the cookie cutter franchise pubs in Coquitlam.
Not even the cheap and value-oriented X-Site.

No - I'm talking about a mystical land of $5 lunch buffets, $2 full-sized burgers and appetizers and cheap beer.  This Garden of Eden even had on-site gambling and sports on the TVs.  Find a quiet corner and you can even do some assignments - as long as you're pretty good concentrating under loud music and other 'distractions'.  It was even exactly equidistant from SFU and my residence.

The only downside: you had to put up with the social stigma of eating at a strip club.  NBI... the only place where the lack of naked women would have actually made it better.  RIP NBI.

I've been here a handful of times mainly because my friends always seem to want to go here for the cheap specials. X-site definitely shows that if you want to have a super cheap meal, it isn't going to be a good one. The food is decent but it really depends on what you get. The pastas are completely flavorless, with the exception of the curry one which is just plain disgusting. The most decent thing on the menu has to be the burgers but they are definitely not worth it if your not getting them during the lunch special and actually paying full price.

The service is alright but it varies extremely on which waitress you get. Most of the time though, it has been really slow and I have seen the waitresses mock customers behind their backs. Overall, if you want a cheap meal with possibly bad service, don't expect that much from your food.

X-site is definitely a strange place. Like the other reviewers I figure it must exist to cater to the SFU crowd because most of its menu focuses on the low low prices. Dishes rarely reach beyond 10 dollars and every day there is a 5.95 special.

I learned about this place in my days at SFU for its steak special. I believe it used to be on Tuesdays, not sure when it is now. But, man, for 5.95 you got a pretty huge steak and all the sides you can eat. And while the steak isn't amazing it's far from the quality I'd expect for the price.

If you're in the area and looking for something affordable with big portions this is the place to go. They have hearty enough drink specials as well so you can spend the whole night there gorging yourself if you so choose.

One of those places that I always seem to come back to, not just for the deal (money to the amount of food), but the relaxing environment and quality as well. With a funky name like X-Site you might think this is your regular hole in the wall, serve you slop and get the heck out, well this definately is not the case, and I cannot even remember how many times I have come in here just to relax.

You come through the front, and the decor is mainly made up dark flooring, dark walls, and dark talbes and chairs, but there is enough light in here. There is a board right at the front telling you what the specials are for the day. You get seated at a table, even though they have a bar, I have never seen anyone eat there. Behind the bar is the drinks, but also the kitchen, where one of the owners is also the chef, and he is constantly whipping up food for everyone in the restaurant, he has a brother too, that looks like him that works in the back.

You can just come here for drinks if you choose, but when you get presented the menu you notice that nothing is over $10, and then you think to yourself, these must be some pretty small plates if they are offering these prices to me. You are pleasantly surprised in regards to size for price, as if you are to order a steak, it's a platter with salad, a half potato, with a heap load of rice, and a piece of garlic toast. If that does not get you full, then you go on ahead an order more. The drinks are cheap, the food is cheap, and it is a great place to catch sports. They have 3 big tv's that are always showing sports, and if it is a big game, or a Canucks game, the music turns into the broadcast.

For a cheap solution for a meal, good food, good service, and if your around the area, come here for a bite and drink.

Cheap beer and huge portions. An SFU destination to rewind after exams (or before for the brave).

Food: To sum up = cheap pub food in huge portions + affordable alcohol = happy students.

Atmosphere & Service: Tables surfaces are metal and uncomfortably cold to touch. Pubby-ish environment. Quick service.

When I told my friend that we were going to try X-Site Grill for dinner, she thought I was talking about an adult store (and there actually is one, called X-citement closer to Boundary Rd).  I quickly defused that idea, and we headed over.

We ordered the calamari to start and like what Kelley R. said, it was tender and crispy.  It wasn't overly oily either and had a good dose of seasoning.  I ordered the havarti burger and that was literally what it was.  A burger with a slice of havarti on it - the burger wasn't hot enough to melt the cheese though.  It was very greasy - probably from the bacon also in the burger.  It came with a salad and some potatoes with sour cream.

My friend ordered the NY Peppercorn steak and when it arrived, it looked like something you would get at a HK style cafe.  The steak was fine - cooked to medium rare as requested.  There was a lime cream (? it was hard to distinguish) sauce drizzled on top which was a bit bland.  The steak came with garlic bread, salad, potatoes with sour cream and some rice.  The potatoes and rice were cooked like a Greek restaurant would cook them and we joked that X-Site shared their kitchen with the Greek restaurant across the street.

For its price, this was great food.  They have daily specials with a purchase of a drink - Mondays is steak, Tuesday burgers... and thats all I remember.  They also have drink specials - Monday a couple of beers, Tuesdays are Caesars, Wednesday are martinis, Thursdays are highballs and Friday are long island iced teas.  I don't remember Saturday and Sunday.  Will I be back?  Maybe if I'm in the area and craving some greasy bar-like food.  It is pretty out of the way though otherwise...

I love this place! I think X-Site is great because they have a huge assortment of dishes, all for under ten dollars. In their menu, you can find steak or salmon platters for only $9.95. In those platters, you get generous side portions of potatoes and salad (with the salmon there is also rice pilaf AND garlic bread!). If your tastes are more casual, there are various burgers to choose from (chicken, beef, veggie and even salmon).  Again, they are reasonably priced.

From Monday to Thursday (they are closed on Sundays), they have a featured dinner item at an even lower price (ie. Thursdays offfer the full salmon platter for only $5.95 as long as you purchase a beverage). That is one more reason to go.

Another great spot: their appetiziers. For only $5.95, you can get a nice portion of calamari rings (no tentacles) and that tztiki (sp?) sauce. Their calamari, in my opinion, rivals the 'bigger' eateries like The Keg and earls.

As for drinks, again they offer a wonderful Drink Special of the Day.

X-Site offers a great value for your money. This venue gets my thumbs up.

This gets 5 stars simply because of the quality you get, for the price you pay.

No meal ever exceeds ten bucks. And there are specials every day of the week! I think drink specials too. It's located really close to my alma mater, so they're definitely catering to the college crowd. Fair enough.

Haven't been here in ages just b/c it's out of the way? But remember having a burger of some sort, and it really was on par with something from Cactus, Joeys, Moxie's or some overpriced played-out chain that would charge 3x the price.

Definitely recommend it and would return if I'm ever in the neck of woods.

They have a great lunch menu that is very affordable. A friend of mine met me here for lunch one day and I was hooked. They had a good selection of lunch specials at very affordable prices. There was about 10 different entrees to choose from that are under $5 with the purchase of a beverage. The portions are massive, so unless you are a big eater, be prepared to bring back some leftovers. I have been here at least three times over the last few weeks and have been pleased with every visit. The food was fast and the service was good. Poor waitress was working on her own for the lunch hour. Btw, she did a great job. I will be coming back here as often as I can as well as bringing as many friends as I can. Great place for the SFU or BCIT students, good affordable meals at a reasonable price.

I've been a fan of X-site since the old owner of this establishment. Their daily specials and lunch specials are amazing. What you know about 4.99 specials? Yeah it's better than Mcdonalds, but it's not fast food. Be ready to spend 45-60 minutes here as their kitchen is relatively slow. Besides the slow factor, the quality and quantity is superb. My fav dishes include the chicken souvlaki and their chicken Cali burger ( chicken breast, special sauce, and half an avocado). Two lunch specials and two drinks 18$ including tip. I've posted their drink specials too. Keep in mind their pitches have gone up in price to 12$. Last time I ordered a pitcher it was around 10$ but that may have been years ago. Damn inflation... Mondays, 2.95 pints, 4.99 steak, see you there.

Love it.  We've been to this joint since high school days.  They have generous portions of food at reasonable prices.  For the price you are paying, you are not going to get The Keg meals, but they are reasonable.

    Chicken strips
    Chicken Wrap

    Daily soup & Caesar salad
    Daily soup & BLT sandwich
    Fettuccini Alfredo

My husband I met some friends at X-Site last night and were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed ourselves. While many people in our neighborhood recommended X-site for its large portions and reasonable prices, I didn't expect the quality to be very high. But as far as pub food goes, this place really measures up. We started with wings and calamari. The calamari was excellent - tender and crispy, and not greasy at all. The wings had just the right amount of spice and were cooked perfectly. X-Site doesn't have a deep fryer, so while everything was nice and crispy, it was also baked. I can definitely appreciate not having all of that oil and grease - even when I'm in the mood for naughty pub fare.  My entree salad was huge and the grilled chicken atop it was juicy and seasoned nicely. The peppercorn steak entree got rave reviews and the veggie club (add bacon) my friend ordered looked like three layers of farmer's market heaven. The entrees were all served with a large and fresh green salad and roasted potatoes. Our huge meal was washed down with two pitchers of Okanagan 1516 for only $12.95 each. You really can't beat a meal that stuffs four hungry people for under $80 with drinks and appys!!

As mentioned previously, stop by for really decent drink specials (hello $2.95 highballs on Thursdays!) and a daily $5.95 dinner special.

I live very close to this place so I tend to eat here often.  The lunch specials are insanely cheap.  I usually just stick with the Chicken Souvlaki Meal since you get nice juicy chicken breast, rice, lemon potatoes, cesar salad and some pita thingys.  Oh ya, and Tzatziki sauce of course!  Ive had this meal probably 20 times and it is consistently perfect.  Im sure there are some authentic Greek places in town that have more flavorful Souvlaki, but there is no way in hell that they can beat these prices.  NO WAY!

I'll have to give this place a solid four stars because it's going to be one of those places i'll be coming back to even though it's not very close to where i live. The cost of the food that they offer are surprisingly cheap considering the location their at. On top of that, portion sizes are very generous. I went there on a weekend, and although the prices are more pricier than their week day specials, I wouldn't mind paying regular prices on week days.

Haven't been back to X-site for about a year...menu hasn't really changed and we were North Burnaby but it was too snowy to look for an alternative...Good food for the price, large portions of cheap pub food. Steak & burger for two under 20 bucks... Server was friendly and not too pushy.

    Would go back again.....
