Let's see...I just bought some Bundaberg ginger beer from Australia, some Walker's assorted shortbread cookies and stem ginger oaties from Scotland, a bar of Swiss-made dark chocolate Toblerone, instant Vietnamese pho and Singapore curry soup (both made in Thailand), a bottle of Italian-made limoncelli fizzy lemonade (made with cane sugar and not the dreaded "high fructose corn syrup") and a sixer of Great Lakes Burning River pale ale from here in the good ol' USA. I feel so worldly! And beyond grabbing all the yummy international foodstuffs I could carry, I entertained myself perusing the ethnic furniture (much of it Asian), the fabrics, windchimes, little African masks and statues and other fun decorative objets d'arte. Then came the several aisles of wine bottles I needed to look at, then the huge kitchenware/servingware section where i considered buying a set of little espresso cups and a new pepper mill.
For me, Cost Plus holds hours of fascination, every time I go there. I never fail to find something new or interesting or just plain cool. Strange candies from Japan, Germany or England? Check. Odd little toys? Check. (I HAD to buy the "voice changer" toy, a thing you speak into which alters your voice into a robot's, or a little kid's or a young woman's or old man's. My boss hates me for this purchase.) Pasta shapes you've never seen before? Check. Jams and preserves made from fruits or vegetables you've never before considered? Oh yeah.
Cost Plus World Market is just too much fun. Sign up for their loyalty program to receive emailed coupons and discounts at the register. -

One day, I woke, well... never went to sleep, and I said to myself in the morning, "Self, let's go to World Market." Since, I'm sane, I didn't respond. But, my self did oblige to my wishes.
I'm usually a regular patron of the World Market on Broadway, but didn't feel like dealing with that area that day. I decided to finally try this one in Evanston for a change of pace. Boy, was I happy for that decision. While the Broadway one is cool, it in no way compares to the worldliness of the Evanston one. I initially came with the intent to buy some everyday plates. After 20 minutes of being in the store, I noticed I hadn't even journeyed over to the tableware section.
What held me hostage was the pantry area with all types of products that made me struggle with my predetermined shopping budget. PoPchips in flavors Thai Sweet Chili and Sweet Potato, the cutest little jars of various artisan condiments like honey specifically for tea, Red Velvet Pancake mix, and many other things I hadn't seen elsewhere. Especially, not at the Broadway World Market.
The music had me singing aloud. At least 4 staff members asked me cheerily if I needed any help. I was really enjoying my shopping. I will, however, admit that their prices do seem to be higher than the Broadway location. Whoever says the city is more expensive than the burbs hasn't been in Evanston. Still, I like this place better. It's an extremely short walk from the Davis Purple Line station and many other establishments. Let's not forget how close it is to the lake as well! I foresee a stop here to fill out a lunch basket for a picnic by the water in my near Summer future.
The tableware is less at the Broadway location, and they have a better selection. So, I'll still go there for that. Pantry items, though... I never noticed until now that the lack of diversity in Lakeview is reflected in that location's offerings. Evanston World Market will be my go-to for a wide selection of worldly pantry products from now on. -
Review from Arlene A.
The one star is specific for this location of World Market, and in no way should be interpreted as my overall feeling for the World Market brand. The staff here could use a refresher course in customer service 101.
Trying to make a return here is worse than pulling teeth, because when you're getting a tooth pulled they'll at least shoot you up so you don't feel the pain. Here at the Evanston World Market? Not so much. There was a person (manager?) standing in front of a computer, and since the single cashier had a substantial line I went to her for assistance. She didn't seem interested. She told me to wait, and then stared at the computer screen for 5 minutes, and then after a heavy sigh and an eye roll asked what I needed. I felt as if I were an inconvenience, and couldn't wait to get out of there.
The lesson I learned was, my World Market on Broadway in Chicago is a hidden oasis, with a staff that is amiable, smiles and cares about it's customers. -
Review from Kenny O.
Prices have been rising steadily over the years.
I still come pretty often since it's the only place in Evanston (that I know of) that carries some Latino-American soft drinks (like Cola Champagne from El Salvador and Inka Cola from Peru).
They have some nice plating plates for those events where you just need to impress company. It isn't cheap, but it's convenient.
They have beer and wine tasting events every once in a while -- it's not a bad idea to check in to see if a new event is posted every once in a while. -

I always insist on going in here when we're in Evanston because of their wine and snack selection. Oh, and if you're a member you get discounts on EVERYTHING.
Lychee gummies? Salted Carmel Hot Chocolate? Peanut butter chocolate pretzels? Uh, yeah. That sounds great.
As I said, their wine selection is huge. They also have some nice furniture - we got a coffee table and TV stand from here and both are made with quality. They are holding up nicely.
Their motto should be:
World Market: Great for Snack Attacks, Booze and Furniture -

They had a heck of a sale on furniture....got us a couple of chairs...one of them was in their storage facility a half block or so down the back alley from the store...this lovely lady named Heather was a trouper and she carried it out in the pouring rain with smile on her face the entire time :)
Yeah, Heather!!!! Thank you for being awesome! -

Very nice selection and very good prices... Good parking and friendly employees... I like the candy variety and old toys and games they carried. A fun way to spend time waiting for the movies... Not crowded and easy to find things....

I have found something every single time, which is not good for my wallet. We recently bought two chairs, a bookshelf and media center on sale, at fabulous prices. Two days later, they dropped their prices again and gave us a price match and money back. I love that their furniture is usually solid wood and has a great finish. What more can one ask for? While their big stuff is good, their selection of food items is super tempting. The chocolate, the coffee and other snacks are uncommon and yummy. I always leave with my hands full, looking forward to an evening of gluttony.

So I generally love world market. Great selection of wines. Great durable furniture. Nice jewelry. The hubs and I normally go to the one in the city but our furniture piece that we wanted was out of stock so we called ahead to reserve a buffet table at the Evanston one.
On a rainy 45 minute trek from the city we made our way to the store. We easily spotted a worker to retrieve and pay for our table. My hubs had a 10% off coupon, which basically covered tax. But as he was paying I was browsing and found a pair of towels that I liked and wanted. So the hubs goes up again about 10 minutes after making the previous 400$ purchase and asks if they would honor the 10% discount that he just used. And the woman said "no". So the hubs asked if he could return the previous purchase and start over and she still said "no, you'd lose the 10%". And then he asked if a manager could override it and make an exception and she still said "no that's not possible".
WTF. We had purchased the $900 matching dining set at the other world market (on sheffield, which was great) and they let us use a coupon without physically having it. That's customer service!! And all I wanted was 10% off a pair of towels. It wasn't about the 2$ I would've saved. It's the principle. And we just spent $400 at your store. Show some courtesy.
Everyone else in the store was very helpful. But I'm sticking to the one in the city. -
Review from Helen S.
Meh. I used to love this place, but prices got more expensive (spices used to be $2.99 a jar, now $3.99). Voss water is $2.50, which is almost double the price of Whole Paycheck which is inconceivable. I like browsing around though because it's kinda fun, and their reward program is pretty good.

This is hands-down my favorite store in Evanston. Before one of my best friends moved away, we would just wander down to World Market and spend an hour or two in here -- that makes us sound a bit lame, but we seriously had a lot of good times in there! On the days that I miss her, when I just want to kill some time, or when I need anything from wine to housewares to birthday gifts, I find myself at World Market.
I LOVE WORLD MARKET FOR:
- Cheap wine ($5 Moscato, what whaat!)
- Large selection of housewares
- Decor
- Cheap jewelry, scarves, handbags, etc.
- Variety of teas and coffees, including Kona coffee (my favorite)
- Snacks, including my favorite Asian fruit gummies, rice snacks, and Hawaiian BBQ chips!
WHATEVER YOU MAY NEED, World Market will have. Guaranteed. -
Review from Matt R.
This place is awesome. Staff are friendly, they have flat out cool and unique stuff, and their "membership thing" saves a ton of money.
We come here whenever possible, whether it's to buy a fun wine or some
furniture, we have had good experiences every time with have come here.
It's not unlike going to a cultural grocery store - they have plenty of things from a few select cultures, and some awesome mini hotsauces along with a good variety of teas. It's somewhat of a kitsch store. -

It's two blocks from my new apartment and has an extensive wine selection at great prices. I'm going to be here a LOT! I love the variety of items World Market has from home decor, to international foods to knick nacks. It's pretty much like the perfect place. So glad it's so close and so convenient.

Review from Lisa A.
Some people call them Cost Plus, but I prefer to call this World Market .. because it simply is!! They have a huge selection of items from around the world -from jewelry to picture frames, from wines to potato chips! One of my staples here is the jalapeno potato chips.
One thing I love about this particular World Market is the staff! They're genuinely friendly and very helpful! Last year when I just moved in to a new place I needed a new couch. I had my eye on this super cute sofa bed. I was asking one of the staff about a possible delivery service, packaging, ensembling, etc. He then told me to wait until January -when they will have a huge furniture sale. So I did -and boy, I'm so glad I did! I saved $200 for my dream sofabed -and picked up the cutest floor model coffee table for $40!
My favorite to go store -even when I don't need anything, really! (and for the record, I almost always came out with a little *something*).
Oh - and they always have wine tasting every weekend! Their wine collections is also something worth browsing. I can always find some good yet not-so-common wines from around the globe. -

Man! I never go in here because I need something....when does anyone say, "hey! I need to pick up a Papasan/Japanese hand drum/Pacific Rim Ice Wine/Botan Rice Candy, I better stop by the World Market!" It's just one of those places you wander in and buy random crap you didn't think you would ever need! It's like Pier One with booze and candy and better dishes....
PS, they sell little mini packets of Nutella, w00t! -

I usually hate buying food from stores that aren't specialized in food, but I broke my own rule at World Market.
Oh, how I had been sad: to be thousands of miles from Europe, and miss out on all the Christmas candy days! Well, no more! This place has every kind of European chocolate you could dream of, even a decent Christmas selection and advent calendars!
Beyond chocolate, you can get all sorts of Asian foods (although I have a suspicion that one might get these imports much cheaper in an Asian grocery store in Chicago), wines from around the globe, imported food brands you woulnd't find elsewhere, and a ton of furniture, decorative junk, and more overpriced Asian imports.
All in all, a place well worth checking out. -
Review from David R.
I used to come here for cheap picture frames, but the last few years I don't bother with anything but the food section. I live alone and don't cook a ton, so I like the miniature bottles of garlic oil, balsamic vinegar, dijon mustard, et al. Those little items make great stocking stuffers, too--tiny jars of preserves and hot fudge and lemon curd and clotted cream, bottles of olive oil and hot sauce, various salamis and summer sausages. This year I found hummus in a tube. Hmmm.
I also scored some sort of special British candy bar that my girlfriend likes, called Crunchie. She made me try a piece, which was terrible, but it made her happy to find those in her Christmas stocking, so it was worth it. They had lots of other strange foreign candy. -

Cost Plus World Market is Pier 1 Imports on STEROIDS!
I almost everything in this store, from soy-based coconut scented candles to pre-made curry sauces and magnetic spice containers. Their furniture is lovely and rustic and not as expensive as say, Crate & Barrel. Even if you're not into "ethnic" furnishings, there's something for everyone. I do mean EVERYONE. Need a gift for mom? They have cards and natural bath products. How about affordable glassware and platters for a dinner party? Oh, Fido can always use another plush toy too. There's also something in every corner that will catch your attention. Oh look, SRIRACHA and CHEAP WINE!
This is one of the few businesses I will miss dearly when I move into Chicago in a few months. This place is a wonderful asset to Evanston. -

Where to even begin? This place is my absolute obsession. It is virtually impossible for me to enter the store without leaving with more bags than I can carry. They simply have everything!!!
The wine selection is amazing. They carry wines from all over the world and every type you can imagine and most for under $25. In fact, they carry the most amazingly delicious sangria for only $7 per bottle. They are also the only place where I could find Pacific Rim Sweet Reisling which is sooo great (and cheap). They also carry a wide variety of sake and imported beers.
World Market also has the most wonderful selection of imported foods (and great deals on fair trade coffees), dishes, bedding, home decor, candles, bath products, artwork, gifts, accessories such as jewlery and purses, etc all from all over the world.
There seriously isnt a single thing this place doesn't have and everything is so beautiful and artfully made at a very reasonable price.
They even have cheap cute dog beds and a cat bed shaped like a sushi roll! what not to love?
If you have never been to world market, you must go. You will not regret it!!! -

I love this place! The back half of the store has hundreds of bottles of wine with little blurbs beneath each one describing their flavor, bouquet, and finish. The rest of the store is decor a la Pier 1 and chic, high end (read: snobbish) food items that you'd expect to find in a Williams-Sonoma. I don't care how good it is, you shouldn't pay more than $5 for a jar of mustard unless it can make the sandwich by itself!
P.S. They always seem to have a clearance sale of some sort going on in the furniture department. -

Where can I get Costa Rican Coffee, gourmet dog biscuits, a fabulous dining room table,a new calendar, pasta, pasta sauce, wine, and Italian Candy?
Oh...and it has to all come from the same place!
Before World Market I can imagine that people would say "get the hell out of here, their is no place like that in the world".
But World Market is here and they have everything. It's so easy to get lost in the aisles of furniture, Housewares, food, candy, and drinks from all over the globe. You can be from anywhere and feel at home in World Market. They even have stuff for cheapskates like myself!
Picture this, trying on a silver cuff bracelet while checking out your reflection in a intricately designed mirror while your boyfriend waits for you in the plush red leather arm chair. Only at World Market...Listed in: WINE-ing, Exploring Evanston

I love this place! It's like a mix of Marukai/the 99 cent/dollar store and Costco (sort of).
World Market has the best gummies ever. And that's saying a lot, because I'm a huge gummy fan. :]
Anyway, the employees there are really great, completely friendly, and kind.
The selection there is amazing -- I can find everything that I want here. Everything is super cute/cool.
I will return often. Very often. :) -

This is the place I hate to love! Everytime I go in there, I see something I want or have to have...my wallet is snarling at me! They have a super selection of gifts, food, wine, furniture, kitchen stuff, garden stuff, pillows, etc...etc...
The last time we were in, we saw a wonderful carved giraffe from Africa that would go great in the corner of our living room. She was a beauty - delicate features, long legs, soulful eyes...I could go on and on.... I think we've got about 3 or 4 treasures around our place that traveled the world to find us.
I love their cards and giftwrap, too - pretty unique selection.
The only flaw is the windchime we bought last year fell apart pipe by pipe. Everything else we brought home is still in great condition and admired for great taste. -

Great selection and helpful staff. I enjoy browsing through their interesting selection of wines here. They somehow manage to have the most eclectic things there..
I've purchased..
some furniture pieces
stuff for the kitchen
servingware
picked up a really cool painting and frame
even a wooden bead necklace
and of course wine -

Love love love World Market! I can find things from household items to furniture to food to jewelry!
I am moving into a new apartment and recently bought a few things from World Market for my place. I found a bookshelf for $60, which is probably at least $100 cheaper than anywhere else I was looking. Granted, this shelf is not all solid wood and has more of an open design, which probably explains the price difference. Regardless, I was impressed. I also bought a huge print to hang in my living room. It was more money than I was looking to spend ($120) but is absolutely gorgeous.
The staff at the Evanston location is friendly and are more than willing to help carry bigger items for you, either through the store to the registers, or out to your car. I actually had 2 or 3 people help me at different points and none of them seemed to mind!
I will definitely be back for some smaller items before my move! I can always find something new that I want for a great price! -
Review from Ju L.
This is one of my favorite stores to walk around. Great variety of wine and beer, free coffee and tea samples in the back, and an amazing and interesting candy selection-- though the chocolate section has been shrinking recently. The bathrooms are even clean!
There is no describing the multitude of STUFF that World Market sells. Practically all of it falls under the "crap you don't need" category (think Palahniuk's "slave to one's nesting instinct"...). But it's nice to mill around and touch stuff. Aside from clearance shelves, it's not as cheap as it seems-- you could especially find legit "ethnic" things (like a bottle of Kikkoman) for significantly cheaper at an Asian grocery.
Call me a flower-child socialist, but yes, a big company commodifying international culture so blatantly does make me a little uncomfortable. Is India only the sum of its textiles? I'm not going to tell anyone to boycott World Market, nor am I going to myself, but before jumping to warm conclusions about your rug being happily hand-woven by chanting circles of identical aboriginal women in colorful headscarves, I think we need to stay responsible and keep in mind that World Market is not a fair trade store, even if it pretends to be (contrast: Ten Thousand Villages on Main & Sherman). -

This place is like Pier One meets Sur la Table meets Trader Joe's. They sell everything you would ever need to throw a smashing party. The staff is friendly, and they have amazing goods from around the world. Their wine selection takes up an entire 8th of the store all in the corner with world beers and mixers. I can't wait to throw our first party here in Chicago. Woo Hoo!
Edit Addition 08/05/07:
Make sure to get on the mailing list for special coupons, and if you buy so much on a certain day you get a free tote. I'll find out more about this offer. I can't seem to remember the details right now. -

I'm so glad that I finally discovered World Market.
This location is great, because it offers some cheaper, more interesting alternatives to what you could otherwise find in downtown Evanston. The selection of the food items, wine in particular, supplements what you'll find at WineStyles or Whole Foods.
And they have Abita beer! -

This is an awesome store. They have furniture, food, liquor anything you can imagine from every country.
Fine I actually don't know anything about any of the stuff in this store except: The alcohol section (and the water section because it's right next to the beer).
First off, they have this policy where you can create your own 6pack. You can pick and choose which bottles of beer you'd like. And they have A HUGE selection of beer.
They don't sell hard alcohol like vodka or whiskey but they do have wine.
Their prices are the lowest in terms of beer and wine. Even lower than grocery stores like Jewel and Dominicks. -
Review from Nick M.
My bank says I'm not allowed in here anymore. It's because World Market is the only store I will spend money on needless things. I just can't help it, I gotta have the Cultural accents & art, the decorative accessories, the frames, and the kitchenware!! Let's face it, it's ten times better then Pier One because you can eat ethnic food and drink a bottle of wine as you peruse the store (so maybe you're really not supposed to do that, but they haven't stopped me yet). It's great for gift giving!! The look on a person's face "like what the f am I going to do with this" is priceless. Also, it's also a great way to kill time before a movie.

This store is AMAZING. Fun snacks from all over the world. Cheap items to decorate your house with. Kitchen ware, furniture, dog treats, you name it! Definitely a fun place to browse if you are trying to walk off a big lunch. You'll end up leaving with a big bag of delicious German wafer assortments or something I'm sure.

I love going in here! Most of the time, I browse around while waiting for my movie to start in the theater next door. It's a good place to kill time and stock up on the same candy they sell at the movies for a cheaper price.

I love Cost Plus. Granted, I probably would not buy their furniture, but the decorative items and foodstuffs are wonderful and their is always some interesting little tchotchkes to look at. Things I particularly like here are the large selection of sugar free coffee syrups, the nice hrow pillow assortment, and interesting kitchen items. This location is better stocked than the one near Old Orchard and I prefer it. Seasonal specialties include neat orange flavored coffee at Easter and a large assortment of Christmas ornaments. This place wins hands down over its would-be comptetitor, Pier One.

I love walking around this place just to check out huge "foreign" furniture that I would never actually buy or carry back to my apartment. Don't get me wrong - these "worldly" products are beautiful and in some cases practical, but I don't think a lot of it leaves the store.
