I came here with 5 good friends (we're all students) at around 10:45 pm on a Thursday evening. The restaurant was relatively empty, with around 3 other parties eating there.

We ordered various flavors of their gourmet pizza, which all came out smelling delicious. As a student used to ordering from Pizza Pizza, the quality of the ingredients blew me away (especially the mozzarella cheese). I ordered the Americana, which I would definitely recommend.

All in all, a great experience. Affordable for students once in a while; bills ranged from ~$13 (mine) to ~$24.

We were on route to Montreal for long weekend and decided to take a pit stop in Kingston.  It was a saturday afternoon and we decided to try wooden heads and to relieve ourselves from the heat.  Given the limited selection in Kingston, I can see why this place is popular among locals and University students. It's a charming little bistro in the heart of downtown Kingston, Ontario.  They have their own wood burning oven and a patio for those patio lovers.   We were immediately greeted (which is always a plus) but the only table available was right by the window directly in the sun.  It was so hot that the water droplets from our ice water left unsettling marks on the table as it dried up.

I ordered the Poulet Baton Rouge and the boyfriend ordered the Vesuvia pizza.  Both items were the "recommended" dishes there.   The chicken would have been amazing if it didn't taste like I was eating a box of salt.  It was blackened chicken breast with a potato cake (the best part!!) with a dijon sauce.  Every element of that dish was too salty.  The pizza tasted like rotten olives.  The entire pizza was drenched in oil and was topped with mushrooms that tasted strange.  Something about the "superdynamite" oil they used completely threw my taste buds off.   We couldn't finish the pizza (not because it was too big) and we didn't dare order any dessert.

There was a giant moth that kept flapping away by our table.  The waitress clearly saw it and clearly acknowledged to me that she saw it and did nothing about it.  I could understand the nonchalance if we were outside, but we weren't.  There were many flies in the restaurant - not sure if the place is just dirty or if it was b/c the back door was open.  Either way...gross.

I would maybe recommend this place if by chance all other restaurants in the area had been shut down and there was absolutely no other way to gain access to food to survive. Just maybe.

Decent pizza.  Ok selection of beer on tap and in bottles.

    Nothing I ordered was overwhelming.

The tables have seen better days.  They use plastic handled knives that one would find at Denny's and other 24hr restaurants.

I am confused if they are trying to be a cool lounge or pub.  I guess they are sitting in the middle.

This used to be one of my favourite spots in Kingston.

That must have been a while ago.

My pizza was very undercooked. You'd think that a place specializing in high-end pizza (a wood burning oven, no less!) would know better.

I really hope they get their standards back up to where they were five or six years ago.

Better than average pizza.  Italian style pizza using a wood burning oven.  the pizza was a tad small compared to other similar pizzerias i have been to.  the service and interior were fantastic.  i will go again.

I've been looking forward to this place since I've heard good things about it. I guess you can say that overhyped places usually underwhelm.
My sister and I got here right before the dinner rush so we didn't have an issue getting a seat. We ordered the Calamari Mumbai which are calamari wings cooked in indian spices, tomatoes and lobster butter. Naan is served on the side. The calamari was a bit too rubbery for my liking so I would pass on getting this the next time.  We were both disappointed with the dish. I did like the naan though...can't go wrong with carbs.
The Arrabbiata was shared. It was spicy, which I liked but also very greasy which really killed it for me. I really wanted to like Wooden Heads but I guess this wasn't the meal to do it.

I think my luck here was incredibly horrible.  I was really looking forward to trying the pizza here, so we stopped in Kingston on a drive back to Toronto.

It was about 2:30pm on a Wednesday afternoon.  There were about 6 customers in the restaurant and at least 4 waitresses.  Our waitress seated us, gave us water and then... well... disappeared.  She reappeared about 10 minutes later but instead of asking us if we were ready to order, she climbed a ladder and changed the daily special poster that was high up on the wall next to us.  And when she finished we kept waiting for her to come... but nothing.  After about 20-25 minutes of no service, we got frustrated and walked out.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Wooden Heads. The pizza was phenomenal and the place was bumping at lunch hour. The service was good if not overly intrusive and the decor was quite stylish. I will definitely be back to try some of the other pizza options on the menu. You can also make your own pizzas and choose your own toppings, a nice option for you picky eaters out there.

Make a reservation this place is always busy--any day, any time.

We wandered in on our first visit to Kingston.  Very nice interior, on the intimate side.  Selection was outstanding.  Everyone in our party gave their entree high marks.  Being on vacation, we went for desert too.  Also most excellent!  Not to be missed.

It's hard enough having someone in the family who was a chef.  You're always asking yourself "Is she going to like this?" when you find yourself making beans and wieners or some form of Kraft Dinner recipe that you saw on the back of a box from somewhere that probably wasn't that reputable.  So when my brother married a chef, and she said her favourite restaurant in Kingston was Woodenheads, we figured this was a place that we had to try.

As soon as you walk into Woodenheads, your face with a bistro that has some great wood ovens in the back of it.  Pizza is the main fare and this is what they do best.  The décor is very quaint and inviting, and once seated, you're faced with a fairly decent wine list, an okay selection of taps, and a good portion of bottled beers.  As soon as you peruse the pizza menu, you're able to see exactly why Woodenheads would be seen as a decent place to go eat a nice slice of pie.  Small town pizza this is not.  I've done many reviews on small town pizza, and this is not that place.  Gourmet pizza is where this place is that.  The wood stoves bring a flavour to the pies that are placed in front of you that cannot be rivalled in any other pizzeria found in Kingston.  There's no wonder that my sister-in-law would love the food that comes from this place.

If you're looking for a place that has true Italian flavours and gourmet offerings right in the downtown Kingston core, you can do better than this place.  Fives all around.

I've known Wooden Heads for 10+ years. I've always considered this as a consistent, good place and have tried many things on their menu. But, my recent visit has me thinking...maybe I've overrated their pizzas. Or, maybe they've changed their recipes a bit and now they aren't as good.

The pizza crust was a little too chewy for my liking. Not the way wood-fired, thin-crust pizza should be and a far cry from pizza in Italy. I found the toppings rather bland. Maybe if they kicked up the spice level a bit in the sauce, that could compensate. I found the cheese (mozzarella) they used to be rubbery and flavourless. You know the cheap, rubbery mozzarella you picked up one time from the supermarket (by accident or because it was so cheap) and you got home and it was...bleh! This tasted like they used this stuff on the pizzas tonight.

Suggestion: select a pizza with a spicier mix of toppings if you find yourself here.

I liked the appetizer we got. "Lumpia Diavolo" were spring rolls with blackened chicken, feta and red cabbage. A papaya-habanero salsa and a cambazola cream sauce were available to dip. Very interesting.

As noted by another reviewer, they do have attractive female waitstaff. It's been that way at Wooden Heads always, and consistently so. I guess that warrants another rating star.

As I reflect on the Kingston food scene, few can deny that Wooden heads remains a very consistent restaurant with all the right elements, great location, patio in the summer, a signature menu including a great list of wood-fired pizzas, excellent service from an attractive female waitstaff.

If you're visiting Kingston, this is a fail safe place....just make sure to get a reservation in advance.

I guess I, like Jim R, am a hard sell on Wooden Heads. Spot on atmosphere...It's not a huge space inside but it has a nice feel to it...High ceilings, minimal decor, big brick oven. I haven't gone when the weather is nice out, but it seems like they have a pretty good front/back patio set up to accommodate more people.

I can't really speak to the food other then the pizzas. For the most part, they have some interesting flavor combinations that give hold up to the "gourmet" pizza fad as of late. I did have a cappuccino  once as well, which was delicious. Actually better then the pizza. Not to say the pizza was awful, but it didn't knock my socks off.

The atmosphere is better than the food. GREAT place for a cocktail, but the pizza end of the business would probably crash if it were in an area with a large Italian community (see New England, New York, or Toronto). This pizza is for yuppie Ontario tastebuds..which should need no explanation.
