I went to Wonder Nails a few weeks back to have my legs waxed. It was a  Saturday afternoon. I phoned ahead to see if they had time to get me in. The lady on the phone asked me what time I wanted to come in. I said 3:30 and she said that would be fine.

I made my way over for my appointment. The salon is in a little commercial building right on Brisbois Drive, very convenient with parking in a small lot in front as well as street parking. It's a small place and I found the waxing room to be dirty. Lots of crud on the floors and in the corners of the rooms. Yuck. The room also seemed messy. Again, yuck. I saw a row of big comfy pedicure chairs. Not sure I'd want to go back for that if they don't take cleaning seriously here. I'd be scared that they don't sterilize their tools or soaking basins.

There was a lady doing nails that asked me what I was there for and said I could have a seat. About 5 minutes later, the lady who was going to do the waxing came out to say she would be a couple more minutes. A customer comes in wanting to have her eyebrows done. The lady doing nails said she could be done in a minute. The waxing lady comes out and takes the eye brow client first, not asking me if it's ok, just says it matter of fact. "It won't take long" she says. Great. Nice to be bumped especially when you have an appointment. Anyways, she was done really quick.

My turn. The lady who did the waxing did an ok job. My big complaint was that the wax was too hot. I've had my legs waxed hundreds of times and this was just too hot. Sometimes if the wax is hot, the esthetician will blow on the wax before putting it on you. Not here. They let you burn.

The prices here seem to be very reasonable. However, it's not the pretty pampered salon experience one might like. Sometimes spending a bit more money for better quality is worth it.

I used to frequent Wonder Nails monthly for gel tips, but haven't been for a year or so. I stopped in for a new Shellac manicure after they advertised a great price. Sadly, I got what I paid for.

The application was terrible, and when I pointed out that several nails were very flawed, she either shook her head that it was fine, or told me it was my fault - that I must have bumped it. In the end, she would only replace one nail and simply applied another coat of color or topcoat to the others saying that "Shellac is hard to apply".

Before I left, I pointed out that several of my nails felt soft, to which she - the owner - disagreed. Unfortunately she was wrong; by the time I got home, I had already chipped one nail and, several hours later - because she hadn't cured the gel properly - my manicure was still soft and damanged easily.

I've had a Shellac manicure before and they're beautiful - long-lasting, clean and nearly impenetrable. If you're looking for a fantastic Shellac manicure, stay far away from Wonder Nails and check out Fortune Nails at 13th Street and 12th Ave downtown. It costs $10 more but their color selection is more than triple that of Wonder, their staff is friendly and professional, and their Shellac manicure lasted three weeks.

Wonder Nails is a little hidden.  It's one of those places that people of the area only know about.  It's not on a busy road, it doesn't advertise very much, and isn't a chain.  All those things put together make this a great nail salon.

Because they aren't very well-known, and are mostly a neighbourhood place, they have extremely good prices and friendly, talkative employees.  I mean, where else can you get a full set of acrylic nails for only $35?  Everywhere else I've been it's always more than $40.  So you can imagine how happy I was when I coincidentally stumbled upon this place once afternoon.

Not only do they do a fantastic job on nails, they also offer a bunch of different waxing... also at a very good price.  I'd say the pricing for waxing is more common than that of the nails.  $10 for eyebrows is pretty average.

You know how it's a little sketchy getting your nails done because of the fungus and infections you can get from the tools and an unclean work space?  Well, I had absolutely no fear about getting my nails done here.  Immediately upon my entry I could tell the place was clean.  There wasn't any dirt on the floor, everything was neat and tidy, and there was only the tools out that were needed.  I was pleased, and confident, with the cleanliness of this place.

Located just off the corner of Brisbois Drive and Northmount Drive, this place is a perfect nail salon for residents of the NW.  Even if you don't live in the area, if you're looking for a good, cheap, clean nail salon, Wonder Nails has got it!

I had seen Wonder Nails numerous times since it was right near where I go for acupuncture, so I finally decided to give it a try.

I called and booked a pedicure, I had no problem getting in.  I did have to call and change my appointment later, the woman said it wasn't a problem.

I love the big red doors this place has, reminded me of a Vietnam hostel I stayed in.  The inside is nicely decorated.  The place is small, only 3 pedicure chairs, a couple nail stations.  I was greeted by a woman with a heavy accent, she told me to take off my shoes and asked what I had come for.  I told her I had an appointment for a pedicure at 4pm, so she ushered me over to a chair.  She had me hang up my coat while she filled up the foot soaker, which she ended up making a huge mess with the water.  Another lady came out of the waxing room and asked me what I was there for.  I told her and she asked how long I could stay for.  I told her an hour, since my Husband was at acupuncture next door.  She told me to sit in the chair, hung my purse up for me and brought me some magazines.  She asked if I could wait 15 minutes, while she worked on another client.  Those 15 minutes turned into 30.  The water in my foot soaker got cold and my feet all pruney.  When she finally came, she apologized and warmed up the water for me when I asked.  I did really like that cleanliness was evident, the ladies wore gloves and used sterilized blades.  She cut the cuticle on my big toe and then tried to get it to stop bleeding by pushing on it with her nail, which hurt!  I asked her not to press so hard and she apologized.  The rest of the pedicure went well, she sure scrubbed my legs and feet with the scrub!  The painting job she did initially was messy, but after checking on another client and returning she touched it up.  It turned out good.  She said I could stay sitting in the chair until my toes dried, then she left to go work on another client.  I probably could have stayed in that chair a long time before they would have asked me to leave.  They had a special on the pedicure, so it cost me $32, which I was happy with!

I would return to Wonder Nails if they had a special or for the convenience, but it wasn't the best pedicure I have had.  I do recommend trying it out, the place was clean and the women were very nice!

Horrible service. In fact, the worst I have ever seen or experienced in my life! I used to go there and get pretty decent service, but the most recent time I had a horrifying experience. I had a broken gel nail that I just wanted to fix, and when she greeted me with no patience and enthusiasm I had a feeling that things were about to change. She started off by using the wrong nail size, and when I requested that she change the nail size twice, she ignored my requests and assured me that you could just "file it down". And I know from previous experience that her skills with filing nails is not the greatest. Nevertheless, I sucked it up and expected things to be okay. Not great, but acceptable. When she started by putting on enormous amounts of gel and telling me to put my hand in under the UV light until she came back, I had no idea she meant that she will be occupied with another customer for 15 minutes. Nowhere have I ever seen an employee( and she was the owner of the place!) completely dismiss a customer like that. But again, I sucked it up and hoped that maybe things will be okay. But when she put on yet again, excessive amounts( and I mean EXCESSIVE) of clear gel on my fingers, undoubtedly the gel flowed down the sides of my fingers, and thus burning me painfully when my hand was placed inside the lamp. When I told her that the gel was much too thick, and that I was getting burned, she rudely grabbed my hand, and forced my hand back inside the machine. I had to tell her very sternly numerous times that I did not want to be burned for her to stop rolling her eyes, sighing with much annoyance in front of me, and she stormed away and started complaining about me to other employees in Cantonese. No surprise that I left that place in a hurry, and will never be visiting again. The friend that accompanied me was also left stunned at the offensive acts of the owner. I can tell that the owner will be very courteous to some customers, but when I have done nothing to provoke her, I find this "picking favorites" sort of behavior extremely unprofessional.
