This place is the only Chinese restaurant walking distance from my house. I tried really hard to like it, but I'm disappointed by the quality of the food. I haven't tried anything on the Western Steak Burger menu, but I've tried the orange chicken and egg rolls. I think it would have been good, except it wasn't fresh. I had to pan fry it when I got home in an attempt to salvage the juicy crisp texture that I seek in the perfect orange chicken dish.

On a separate occasion, my sister and I went, and she wanted chow mein. There was only a little bit left in the pan and it had obviously been sitting there for a good while. The woman behind the counter said that there was a fresh batch coming out. And when it did, she gave my sister the OLD chow mein in order to get rid of it, rather than giving her a fresh serving. Tsk tsk.

If they made sure their food was consistently fresh, then I would definitely be a regular customer. Perhaps if you go, you'll get lucky and catch the fresh batches. Otherwise I would avoid. Pick Up Stix serves better food, which surprised me considering that the latter is the Americanized white-washed version of Chinese food.

Even if I fed my dog table scraps, I surely wouldn't be giving him the dried up meat on a stick that they tried to pass up as kabob. His chicken jerky treat probably has more flavor and moisture, and is a lot more digestible. The gyro sandwich was edible. I was hungry, ok. It came as a combo for $8. What can I say, that darn gyro sign on the window got the better of me.

With a name like "Oriental Food &Western Steak Burger", I guess the concept is to provide anyone that walked in, a variety of quick fixes. Anything with a one-two step, they'll grill or fry it up. I know, I should of know better. But I like to live dangerously at times while I'm out and about.

Anyway, I do like supporting mom-and-pop businesses and have never written a bad review for one. Especially in this economy, I just don't have the heart. But it looks as if this has been around for many, many years and has no problem getting in it's regulars. I'm doubtful my one review will dent their business much. But I feel I have to warn others...

Do not order the kabob. Just don't do it and save yourself the possible dental work.

"this was known to be the best burger in town years ago", my date told me.

"i like you so much i think you are the one i've been waiting for all my life", my date also told me that, while i was busy fondling the onions out of my already cold philly cheese steak.

now please mark the false statement from two above options. what's your answer, yelpers?

    TRICKY~ ~ its both.

We were educated to think outside of the box, we were taught not to judge a book by its cover. Being the perfect kid, i grow up purposely seeking hole-in-the-wall for better taste, and dreaming of marrying Shrek-alike man in hope that he will have a heart of gold.

now.. allow me to share my sad realization at the pathetic age of 30 (well, pushing): not all mom and pop shops are a piece of hidden gem who could produce the best-tasting food, just like not all lovely things you hear from the man that made you fall head over heels are true.

you can turn your head away from the water stain on cups and lack of ventilation condition of a restroom, but it doesn't mean the restaurant will guarantee you a perfectly cooked sandwich.  i could look pass the man's strained financial condition and suspicious childhood trauma, but it doesn't mean he will give me a heart of love in exchange,  and whisper sweet words meant only for my ears.

So next time, if you happen to approach a run-down restaurant like Winnie's Oriental and think the place looks a little too ghetto for your taste...  Please, no more optimism in hope of landing your very own private tasty spot, because It is more than likely, too ghetto for your taste....

This hole-in-the-wall joint in Serra Mesa has it all in the land of cheap eats:
*Cheap Chinese food served from a row of hot pans
    *Great hamburgers
    *Gyros (including Gyros on hamburgers!)

Get the Gyros Burger! It's tasty and filling, made fresh to order.

This restaurant perfectly fit the fusion of Chinese and Western fare to be a Firefly-themed clue in the 2008 San Diego Rocket Race.

Sure, the restroom is through the kitchen, and their booths will hold no more than 4 ppl. But the food is tasty and inexpensive, and the parking is ample. A great place to go if you don't know what you want to eat.

This is one of my favorite lunch spots. Its a cute mom and pop place with son working there too. They are VERY friendly.

Perfect East meets West food selection.

I'm very picky when it comes to my Asian food. They properly cook  it and they just so happen to be Asian. Go wonder.

My favorite meal is the Two Item combo, choice or rice or chow mein noodles. I get the noodles with orange chicken and the pepper steak chicken. Its delicious! So flavorful and cooked correctly.

I highly recommend Winnie's Oriental Food & Western Steak Burger!
Especially if you're in the Serra Mesa area.

    Pros
    +Inexpensive
    +Two restaurants in one?
    +Not too busy
    +Free refills

    Cons
    -Bland food
    -Slow service
    -Limited seating

Bottom Line: I'm not so sure about this place. I'll give them credit for providing a cheap lunch, but I ordered both oriental food and their polish sausage and they were both subpar. Chow mein was rubbery and I wasn't expecting much from the orange chicken but it felt like eating chicken covered in orange jello. The polish sausage combo was under 6 bucks and I liked the toasted bun, the garlic salt, and the thick cut fries, but it sounds like something I could make at home. I would've rated the polish higher if it came with some sort of toppings other than ketchup, maybe some grilled onions or sauerkraut. Service here is painfully slow. It looked like a two man job when I came here, one guy on the register and the other served as cook. It was lunch time when i tried this place out and I think another cook would've done the job. There was also another customer who ordered before us and I got served before her, and she was steamed. So if you want to brave yourself 15-20 minutes to try this place, be my guest. If not, Subway is next door.

I tried to call in an order for delivery and it was extremely difficult.  I've never been to the place, but I do not recommend ordering over the phone.  I was probably on the phone for about 10 min. trying to explain to the woman what I wanted.  I ordered shrimp lo mein, orange chicken w/fried rice, small egg drop soup, and cream cheese wontons and the price was almost $28.00 jeesh!  We thought it was kinda high and it was gonna take 30 min. we only live a few min. away.  We canceled the order and decided to just drive to pick up stix down the street . Cheaper and quicker.

Never again ! We live in military housing and were happy to have a decent Chinese delivery close by! We order from them at least every other week! We have even referred friends to them. However after today's terrible customer service they will be less one customer! The lady who answered the phone misunderstood our order, we called them and explained the mix up, she apologized that she misunderstood and would send over our entree that was missing free of charge! An hour later still no entree!? We call back she pretends she doesn't know what my husband is talking about. They disconnect and a guy calls us tells us they will not bring us the entree unless we pay for it. We told him the lady messed it up and sent rice instead if beef and broccoli and promised to send it out free of charge, he said no we dont do free, you have to pay! Why should we pay for her error and waiting an extra hour for nothing!!!

Gross. Their asian food sits out ALL DAY LONG. And tastes stale. The lady that owns it is pretty rude. Her fake smile doesn't make up for her rudeness. First time I went here...I had to sit and eat while I listened to the owners husband and son yell and scream at eachother behind the counter. I am serious. Like a full blown fight. I ended up getting up to leave. If you fight in a different language...that does not mean it is appropriate.
Also...try makingthe place look halfway decent.
And be warned...they charge YOU money to use a credit card. No matter how high your bill is.
