Finally tried this place out today, and I'm very glad I did. I showed up at what was clearly not a peak time - mid-afternoon on a Sunday. The place was completely empty and no one was at the counter, so I just went ahead and seated myself (didn't appear to be the type of place you have to wait to be seated anyway). I waited a few minutes, made a few noises to let someone know I was there - cleared throat, scraped the chair back a bit, coughed, etc. Eventually someone came out and brought me a menu.

The menu was more varied than I expected - even had a whole pizza section. But I was there for the good stuff. I almost went for the small clams and chips @ $8.50, but I figured I couldn't pass up the deal of $5.99 for a 1-piece fish and chips made with haddock. I also ordered a side of coleslaw at the server's suggestion.

My food arrived very promptly and looked as great as it tasted. Perfectly battered haddock, hand-cut fries cooked just right, and the freshest coleslaw I've ever had. The grease level was just what I was looking for - just a smidge of grease. You don't order fish and chips without expecting some grease, though, am I right? The fries were ever so lightly salted, which I appreciate as I prefer to season to my own taste. Nothing worse than biting into an over-salted fry. Okay, well... yes there are worse things than that, but you get my drift. I also had my choice of white or malt vinegar, plus a delicious tartar sauce. As fresh as the coleslaw was, it was slightly lacking in the flavour department.

I understand the space has recently been renovated, and they've done a great job. Very clean and modern - I was expecting much less from a fish 'n chips joint, I must admit. Prompt service, once they realized I was there. A few others patrons showed up during my meal. When I walked by a couple hours later, I was not at all surprised to see a full house. A North End gem!

It's been a while since I signed in and wrote a review (still waiting for an improved Blackberry app) but I couldn't clam up about Willman's. It was the first time I stopped for takeout since the the resurrection of the permanent restaurant. The new diggs are SUCH an improvement over the old building. A much larger/nicer dining room and a washroom  (interior unknown...I didn't have to go...and I only mention that there is a washroom because I'm pretty sure the old Willman's didn't have one) greet you and from what I could see the kitchen is bigger and better than ever to cook the food which, as far as my experiences have allowed me to say, is yummy!

The menu doesn't seem to be different than my first visit (in the old building and I had the classic 2pc Fish and Chips to go) and I could find fault in the fact that it looked like it could have been the same piece of paper that I ordered from a year ago...but...the choice of the small
clams and chips makes this complaint disappear.

I was surprised to be asked if I wanted my meal cooked medium or well done. I thought, 'You can choose how your clams are cooked?' Apparently you can! I asked for medium but added that I'd like my fries (which are not frozen) well done. I had time to reply to a direct message and started a
phone call when I was told that my order was ready. Talk about quick!!

I brought my dinner home...it was well after 5pm and I had lunch at 9am, so hunger may have played a factor in how much I enjoyed the clams and fries. Nah! They were just really good. The clams were lightly coated and crispy and not too greasy. Kudos, Willman's....I will bring the pickiest fish eater I know to try your wares the next time she visits. Mom is gonna 'really like' you! ...and that says a lot!

Isn't it awesome when there's a great fish & chips joint in the neighborhood?   One that serves large portions, crisply deep fried in a light batter?  One that serves amazing fries as well?

This is not your fine dining experience, and I've only done take out, but it is always terrific.

Willman's fish and Chips tucked on the corner of 5644 Kane Street in the North End 454-0929 is a long standing Icon. Not only do the offer take out you are able to sit in and dine as well. Great prices and the portions are hefty.

There are different option such as a family pack of 8 piece for $23.75. Haddock is the choice of fish for Willman's when the dip it the golden batter. Nice and light and crispy. Menu consists of Clams, scallops and even chicken nuggets for the kids.

This location is a must try and I think the one and only.

Willman's Fish & Chips is going to have a location on Grafton Street, downtown Halifax,  starting May 1st.

Look for their truck down there, you won't be disappointed. I can't wait!

I am giving this a "meh" review for one reason:  the ripoff "Teambuy" that this restaurant offered.  So for $17 we are supposed to get fish and chips, drinks & cheesecake for two people.  Supposedly, a $42 value.  The two pieces of fish were tiny. The cheesecake was even tinier!  I challenge anyone to tell me that they have ever received a piece of cheesecake that was 1 inch square.  It was literally one bite.  That's it!  We looked around the restaurant and the portion sizes were normal, except ours.  Apparently two classes of meals are offered here:  one for Teambuy purchasers and one for those who order from the menu & pay the full price.  The waiter grabbed the menu from me, so he obviously didn't want me adding up the prices either, which if anyone is interested was $29, not a $42 value.

Really good! Went in one night to ask for directions and couldn't resist trying the haddock fish and chips. Glad I did... the batter is what does it. It tastes like (and has the crunchiness of) the fish at 'chippy's' over in Scotland, and this is the first place in Canada that's come even close. A couple of people say it's too greasy, but, it wasn't that greasy IMO...and if you're ordering fish and chips at this kind of store, I say be prepared for grease.
