A very sweet cafe tucked away on a quiet(er) stretch of Harbord, Wild Thing is one of those places I keep forgetting I need to go back to. With a laid-back atmosphere, charming staff and comfortable spaces, I need to make it back sooner than later!
The first time I heard about Wild Thing opening I knew I had to check it out. Gelato + coffee = everything I want in the world. So one day while heading through the area, I made a stop in to see what was cooking.
Maybe part of the charm was that I was the only one in there that early afternoon, or maybe it was because it was spring and I was excited about frozen desserts in a way you just can't be in the winter. They didn't even have their sign up yet, just the infamous "old pepsi sign" and a chalkboard whose legend read "Wild Thing". I walked up to the frozen counter and spied a good dozen handmade gelato flavors. The only one I can remember at present is the one I tried, but they all sounded delicious and truly hand crafted.
I asked for a cup of the pineapple-basil gelato. The man behind the counter, who was probably the owner, asked me if I'd like to try it first, as it "wasn't for everybody". I agreed and tasted it and nodded. It was perfect. I sat down to enjoy my gelato and flip idly through a design magazine I'd snatched up out of the basket. The barista (owner?) asked me how I liked the gelato. "It's amazing," I told him with a smile. "It tastes like summer." He seemed to like this and we chatted for a bit as I finished up each tangy, green tasting morsel.
