A lot of people moan about how the big box bookstores are driving the little "mom and pop" stores out of business. One strategy to survive in the market today is to specialise. White Dwarf hasn't just survived, it's THE place to go if you're looking for science fiction and fantasy. If you took all the big box stores in town and stuck them together, they could not match White Dwarf for selection.
Some years ago, when I was champing at the bit for Lois McMaster Bujold's A Civil Campaign to come out, I asked Chapters, the Granville Book Company (which was still around in those days), and White Dwarf to call me when it came in. White Dwarf came through for me. (I must have had a wild look in my eye when I got there: the clerk raised her hands as if to ward me off and said, "We haven't even opened the box yet!")
