Review from Alan C.
I've had some great experiences at Whimsical. I was a frequent customer at their old Riverbend location before they moved to 109 Street and always found their cupcakes to be good and their staff to be friendly and helpful.
My friends and I were on the way home from school one day and stopped in to get some cupcakes (instead of an actual birthday cake). There were about 12 of us, and I think almost everyone bought one. We ate them right in the (small) store, standing, and ended up making a big mess of crumbs. We apologized for the mess and mentioned we were there for the friend's birthday. It was late afternoon, so the owner gave us 2 or 3 12-packs of assorted mini-cupcakes (that I assume would have otherwise gone to waste), wished the friend a happy birthday, and we went on our way. Gestures like this made me happy to keep coming back!
That said, I don't go out of my way to spend lots of money on expensive cupcakes often. Are Whimsical's magically better than everyone else's at this price point? Probably not, but they're certainly a nice treat! -

I was completely disappointed with this cake shop. I waited until this store opened impatiently and couldn't wait for a special event to land in my calendar. My auntie offered to buy me a cake for my graduation party a couple years ago and she suggested Whimsical because she sampled their treats at a function.
I went in and flipped through photos of cakes and designed my own cake. It was perfect. I was descriptive in how I wanted the coloured fondant and drew a photo to make my vision clear. The owner was snarky about the fact that I was creating a cake for myself which should have been my first sign. Not impressed with the service. I specified that I wanted a graduation cap made out of a cupcake on top. He said he couldn't promise that. Excuse me? I'm paying you over $300 for cake and you can't deliver what I am asking?
When my auntie brought it to my party my face dropped. My cake was awful. Not what I wanted at all. The colours were awful and of course the graduation cap on top was /not/ a cupcake. Thanks for the promise! Sure the cake tasted fine, but I would never order something from there again. What you get is 100% not worth the price. -

Disclosure: I am not a big fan of the cupcake. But I stopped in to buy a quick treat to take back to the office. For $14 got a 12 pack of assorted mini-cupcakes. This seemed a little pricey.
The reviews were mixed from my colleagues. Most thought they were good, but the icing was very sweet. I had (not surprisingly) the mocha one which had good cake but the very sweet icing did make me reach for my black coffee which is not a bad thing at a staff coffee break.
I don't think I would pick this place for full-sized cupcakes, I would end up with a sugar high.
The staff, once they got off the phone, were very friendly and engaging. And from what I overheard of the phone conversation, they did seem quite willing to accommodate challenging orders. -

The cake designs/decorating are sloppy and amateur. The prices they charge are not suited to the product; they should take a cue from the supermarkets for pricing. Parking is non-existent. Staff are somewhat aloof and not exactly rushing to help you. Was expecting so much more; left with a horrible taste in my mouth. Will never recommend or return.

I went here due to me buying a Internet deal. I wasn't impressed it took me almost 3 times of me driving around the block to find parking. The store is clean and cute. The product is good but almost not worth going to if youre driving.

I came in here today thinking I could order a special birthday cake for someone special. I had something in mind and discussed this with the girl who works there. I looked through a book and after I looked through I really didn't see anything outstanding. Then when I asked if something could be done to suit my taste a little more the price jumped to probably five to ten times what I would pay normally at a regular bakery. I was shocked at how pricey this place really is, and your not even getting any thing outstanding for the price. I don't think I'll ever come here looking for a birthday cake Good Luck to Whimsical Cake Studio, Your going to have to get alot more creative then Whimsical, to reel in the prices your asking????

I stopped in here on a whim (lol) one day for a cupcake, and was pleasantly surprised. I love the cupcakes here! They have a nice selection of cupcake flavours, and a lot of the cupcakes I've tried here aren't overly sweet, which is nice.
They also have a nifty photo album where you can see a lot of the cool custom cakes they've made. The staff there are super nice, and satisfied my curiosity by answering the zillion and one questions I had about professional cake-making. -

Instead of just editing my previous review (I moved this place from three stars to two) I thought I'd explain myself a little more.
I've tried a couple other cupcake places since my review of Whimsical and that has changed my perspective a lot. Relatively speaking, the cupcakes at Whimsical are pretty sub-standard.
To me, cupcakes should be light and fluffy, or dense and fluffy, and soft. Somehow, even though the cupcakes at Whimsical are airy and full of big holes, they are not soft or fluffy at all! This is probably because they're too greasy. Achieving moistness through grease is pretty blech, but that seems to be their strategy. That, along with the lack of flavor (better than Fuss but still not great) and shortening-flavored icing, I can't really even give this place an A-OK.Listed in: 30 Day Challenge, August 2011, Dibs Out, Dining Near Campus, The Great Cupcake Adventure…

I tried their cupcakes and the texture were pretty good - soft and moist. However, the icing tends to be a little bit too sweet. You definitely need to have a cup of coffee ready.
As for the regular cakes, I will give it a try next time! -

I have to say that I only drop in for a cupcake as an "indulgence". I can't really comment on the cakes ... though there are always a few of those Food Network decorated cakes on display. I do find myself marvelling at what can be done with fondant.
The cupcakes are a little piece of heaven though. I find myself trying different ones and never being disappointed. I make myself walk past at times or I'd be morbidly obese just living in the neighbourhood. -

Oh my goodness I love this place! Their cupcakes are so cute and are to die for! They have cute cupcakes with creative flavours (Smarties) and classic flavours (Red Velvet). I also took time to flip through their photo album of cakes and look at their examples in the windows, I really want to get a cake here! The Whimsical Cake Studio looks just as it sounds, cute, whimsical and very pink! I would definitely recommend this to a friend!

Cupcakes abound at every twist and turn in this city, and Whimsical fulfills cupcake-related needs in the Garneau-University area. I've been a couple times and it certainly isn't a spot for sitting down and eating. They don't have public washrooms and don't serve coffee, which eliminates any residual desire for me to stay there. Their cupcakes are ok but didn't blow my socks off. Certainly better than the supermarket, at least. They have some unusual flavours, like pistachio, but for me they don't stand out in the crowd.

Although I do have good things to say about Whimsical, I want to be 100% honest with my experience.
The owners are fantastic, They were friendly and gave me the time I needed to make decisions about my order.
A bit of a foodie myself, I have to say they cake was what you'd expect from a bakery. It was good! And I loved the texture of their buttercream.
However, when it comes to price and styling of the fondant work, I was left wanting. As someone who works with fondant on an amateur level, I was surprised to see a family members cake look so... unprofessional. If I'm going to spend hundreds of dollars on a cake for my special day, I would hope that it would look better than something I could whip up myself. I have seen their portfolio and seen some of the impressive fondant work that they have done. This to me, seems that my family's order was not important enough for them to take the time they would if they were to have it photographed.
To sum it up, I was satisfied with taste and staff, however their artwork is lacking. -

Whimsical Cake Studio is the latest addition to the growing landscape of cupcake shops. In addition to a huge variety of cupcakes (normal size, minis, and even a few vegan selections), you can also find cookies, specialty cakes (I have never seen a bundt cake in person before), and unique creations such as the "brownkie" - a brownie with a cookie baked right into it. That is what I had - and although it looked small to the eye, I could only get halfway through it. My friend tried a peanut butter cup cookie, which had an entire peanut butter cup smack dab in the centre (I see a theme here . . .). While there, I also picked up a small gift for my mother - a cookie with an ornate Mom "tattoo" design on it in thick vanilla icing. She had it for dessert after supper that evening, and said the cookie was extremely fresh and tasty.
Ironically, we did not try the cupcakes, but the selection seemed great and the "sprinkle station" where you can add your favourite sprinkle topping was a - dare I say it - whimsical touch.
Whimsical Cake Studio also does a lot of custom baking for weddings, birthdays, and other special occasions. The staff was extremely friendly and content to let us browse for as long as we wanted. I am certain to be back to try the cupcakes.
