Wheatberries has far more meaning for a few locals than for anyone else. To us, it had the right feel and was a communal hang out. To anyone else, they serve decent coffee and baked goods.
It's past its heydays, when a string of good servers (e.g., John, Lea) created a good vibe, along with the tasteful, but slightly dilapidated decor and funky music. It was Mark and Jane's brainchild, their first coffee shop and, for me, their most successful creation.
Notice I only remember everyone's first name. It's like that in a small community.
The place was vibrant and for the price offered far more than a coffee and muffin. Places like that follow an arc: they're known to few at first, then word spreads and the place gets really alive, but the vibe eventually flattens out; then others come looking for it, but it's already gone, remaining only as a warm glow in our memories.
Since then, Mark and Jane opened new outlets, none quite matching the original. Most recently, they sold this one Wheatberries to new owners, who are trying to revive it. It may yet find some of its former local glory, but you can never really return to what once was there.
I can't diss the food or coffee: they're decent at all the Wheatberries. But you never really went there only for the food, at least not this one.
