Yes, they're expensive. And, yes, they ask for payment up front. But none of that mattered to me when they saved my dog's life. The vet we saw was compassionate, caring and knowledgable. After being misdiagnosed by our regular vet twice, she knew right away what was wrong with our dog and got him the emergency care he needed. He otherwise would have died. So I can deal with the price in exchange for kindness and skill.

    Overpriced and underwhelming.

The Drs we dealt with were less than understanding, not friendly, and seemed to have little respect for us, our cat, and our situation.

We took our cat Niemo here in December 2009 when he began vomiting uncontrollably. It was 1AM on a Saturday morning.  Our estimate for 24 hours of care was $1200 to $1800 dollars, and we would need to put a deposit for the top price. It was a week before Christmas, and this was NOT in the budget. After many tears, they cut the estimate to $700/$1200, and we left him there overnight. He was admitted with a bowel obstruction, but he was diagnosed with kidney failure after 12 hours. I then needed to come up with an extra $1000 dollars to continue care through the weekend. On top of that, the centre tried to get us to pay hundred of dollars more for x-rays, ultrasounds, and testing, which we declined. The drs told us that he was not going to survive much longer if we had him discharged without the extra diagnostics but we had no choice at that point.

Throughout the weekend when we visited, we were told that Niemo was two paws out the door, wouldn't last much longer, and we were told the rest of his short life we would need to be giving him IVs and medication on a regular basis. We were also pooh-poohed on for not having pet insurance, which was the last thing we wanted to listen to at the time.

On Monday we had him discharged and took him to our regular vet, and we have received much more compassionate care. Niemo is now a happy, relatively healthy kitty, no thanks to Western Vet.
