Although I do recognize that this store carries several old-time classics, I was certainly not impressed with their business. We even went to great efforts to make it in here due to the limited parking around it and annoyingly small rows.
I saw an AMEX symbol on the door, yet when I went to try to use it, I was notified that the machine was not currently accepting AMEX. I was also made aware that you have to purchase more than $10 to use your credit card. Achieving that was not difficult since the prices are approx $3-$5 per lb. What was hard to swallow was the unreasonable exchange rate for the US dollar. I decided that I would take out cash instead and not bother with the whole situation.
It's a shame they have such terrible customer service skills because I loved their candy selection. They have macaroons, Turkish delight, Sponge Toffee, various Jelly Belly flavors, cashew nuts, gummy frogs, jawbreakers, maple syrup, candy necklaces, almond bark, and bear claws. Mouth watering, isn't it? Just beware, the candy is laid out in display cases that aren't covered and the staff behind the counter does not wear hair nets or gloves. I dare you to ask them what happens to unwrapped candy that falls on the ground... or just look long enough and find out for yourself!
Fortunately, there are two other candy stores nearby that satisfied my sweet tooth. -

This place used to carry my absolute most favourite Lindt chocolate bar in the world. It was the only spot in Alberta that had it outside of Switzerland (that I had ever found anyway), aside from the cylinders of individually wrapped chocolate squares you see in stores around Christmas.
Every time I head to Banff, I still stop in to check and see if, on the off chance, they've stocked my chocolate bar again. Alas, they haven't yet, but my visits are never a complete waste. This candy shop carries all kinds of things. The most impressive, I think, is the collection of Pez dispensers at the front of the store. You can find all manner of characters for that little candy. The grossest find was a box of flavoured grasshoppers and crickets. Yes, you read that right. Real bugs. Seasoned. Ready to eat. Ewww.
It's the hope for the chocolate bar and the weird finds like the bugs that keep me coming back. -

Don't be fooled; Welch's Chocolate Shop is not just a candy store, it is a TRADITION for anyone who has ever been to Banff. In fact, it is SUCH a tradition that when anyone even mentions The Candy Store, there is only ONE that we speak of- That ONE being Welch's.
The space itself may not be huge, but the way that they have strategically fit candy into this space is nothing short of brilliant. We're talking every candy you can imagine. Jawbreakers, gummies, homemade chocolate, bear paws, sponge toffee, pink elephant popcorn, peanut brittle, laffy taffy, licorice, pop rocks, gobstoppers, bubbletape, caramels and the list goes on and on.
And let me tell you straight up. I LOVE my candy. I don't know why. I mean, I know it's not good for me, I know it goes straight to my hips and I know that it's a waste of money but you know what else I know? I know that I love it just the same.
I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that this place sells all their candy for a dollar. They don't. But then again, neither does Willy Wonka.
If you want to take a trip down memory lane and leave a store with a paper bag filled with all your childhood memories in candy form, then be sure not to bypass Welch's on your next visit to Banff.
It's conveniently located right on the downtown strip but be sure to pay attention to the sign on the door: "Don't forget Mom". -

This candy store is a sure seduction when walking the main boardwalk in Banff, the only thing that is my largest criticism is the size of the store rows. In fact just walking into the store itself you have to wait till the people either goes in or out before you yourself enter in or out. Also while walking down the rows I think I knocked over a couple of packages and I saw a couple of abandoned lollipops strewn on the floor.
For candies be sure to expect Old Tyme Favourites, Liquorice, Chocolate Bars, Chocolates Liqueur, Chocolate & Candies Liqueur, Sugar Free Chocolate & Candies, and Maple Syrup Products. But my favourite areas was the Pez wall, would you like Pez candy being served to you by the throat of Johnny Depp as a pirate, Orlando Bloom, or perhaps from Hello Kitty or Donald Duck. The sky's the limit on this Pez board.
There seems to be back areas where they make candy or the gift wrap the products you buy. I am not quite sure as I got kind of claustrophobic so I had to leave. But this candy shop has every option of candy in my opinion.
