There was a long wait for Guu right next door, so we stopped in for a cup of coffee while we waited. I ordered one of their seasonal drinks, a peppermint mocha latte. It was yummy and they even made a nice little design on it (see photo). We also ordered one of their cakes (Dessert before dinner? Why not?). It wasn't too sweet, which was perfect.
This is a cute little cafe and a great place to just relax and have a cup of coffee. -

It was my first time at WE and I was attracted by the really nice interior decor- very french and elegant with the simple black & white theme- it was defiantly a nice place to hang out with friends and family. I was with a group of friends and we ordered quite a few things to share. Among them, belgian chocolate waffle with green tea ice cream and blueberry cheesecake were my favorite. The waffle was warm and crisp, covered by dark chocolate. On top of that, the sweetness of green tea ice cream balanced off the bitterness of the dark chocolate- it was delicious! The Cheesecake is another must-have; it was light and fluffy with real blueberries inside. I also had a sip of my friend's ice green tea latte, love it! Definitely will go back again!! :))

The coffee here is amazing! I stood and admired the caramalization on my americano for awhile and almost felt like I was ruining it by adding a little milk and half&half. The flavour tones are a little darker and more bitter than Starbucks which I enjoyed. Absolutely no bitter aftertaste which confirms they roast their beans daily. IN LOVE.

There are a lot of local roasters in town. If you look close enough, they all started out as small, independent cafe operators. Eventually, they all moved up the food chain. With operations getting bigger, they take on a role that only THEY know what's best for the market.
But hey, there's a new op. in town. And for a change, this is a cafe/roaster from the get-go. The roasting is as good as it gets. Well, I try not to give a subjective opinion. Being in coffee business for more than a decade, I dare say it's a great roast when I taste one.
WE Coffee roast single origin as well as brilliantly blended roast, the West End Blend. The espresso blend is so well balanced that the flavor distinctively cuts through the milk. I enjoy the single origin roast as my daily black drip coffee. No sugar, no cream needed. As for espresso, I take straight shots and let the after taste lingers on my taste buds. Occasionally, I will take a double ristretto macchiato...depends on the weather.
There aren't many (roaster+cafe)s around which are as accessible as WE Coffee on Robson Street. Coffee beans roasted on site...and...coffee served by the roaster himself...how cool is that? Embrace it!
So next time before you spend $12-$14 at an upscale supermarket for a bag of month-old premium brand coffee bean, why not give this roaster a chance?
BTW, don't forget to try the waffles. They are deadly delicious!

* Supermarket quality overpriced food *
This newish cafe seems nice on the surface, but after my lunch today I just can't see myself returning anytime soon to eat.
I had the turkey croissant, which was served with a side salad.
The smallish croissant (http://www.yelp.ca/use...) itself was burned on one side (the far right side in the picture) by the reheating in a toaster oven. The croissant was somewhat flaky, but reminiscent of the type you get at the supermarket and then reheat. The "turkey" was those awful processed thin turkey slices that remind me of the sandwiches I used to get in my high school cafeteria. Blech. There was a rather unripe tomato and a lettuce leaf. The only twist was that instead of cranberry sauce they put blueberry sauce. Unfortunately the blueberry sauce reminded me of the artificial type you get at the supermarket as well to put on boxed frozen waffles (I did see waffles on the menu, and can only imagine). Not impressed!
The small side salad (http://www.yelp.ca/use...), which was included, offered very basic greens with a few slices of cucumber and bell pepper. The lettuce was incredibly overdressed in spots with a dressing that had a bitter herbal overtone, while the rest of the lettuce, cucumber and bell peppers had almost no dressing. Again, not impressed.
With tax lunch came out to more than $10, not a good value at all considering the quality.
Supermarket quality would be the best way to describe the meal overall. A mediocre expensive supermarket, that is! I won't be returning anytime soon.Listed in: Which wich is which?

Adorably attentive service, great latte (with latte art- love!), sparkling clean, bright modern interior... I loved it! I had this custardy dessert tthat came cupped in a chocolate shell. It looked amazing and tasted decent. I ate the whole thing, but I would order something else next time. The owner was so kind and he and his staff always made sure our waters were full. Considering that Robson can be a touristy strip, this place really out-delivered my expectations. I'd definitely come back for a fun catch up spot with a friend.
*highlight: The servers wore Santa Claus inspired aprons. How festive. I totally want one now...Listed in: Most memorable Staff, Workin' with WIFI

Second time this week. This time, I tried the waffles - strawberry - since I was told it was their special (or specialty). A half order was more like 2 halves and certainly more than enough for me. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the amazing waffles at Medina, or maybe I just prefer Leige, but this was pretty average, served on a nice plate.
If my experiences were solely based on coffee, I'd keep the 4th star, but the waffles really brought it down a notch. Sticking to the coffee from here on out.Listed in: Vancouver's Coffee Culture: A…, Where's My Wi-Fi? These…

What can I say. Lots of effort by the owner and staff, lots of components all put together in a 'designer' generated plaftorm. Missing is the substance and experience.
The sandwiches are priced with the expectation of excellent quality and high quality ingredients but the filling was lacking. Very spare and not that well put together. The side salad should be tossed with dressing not with dressing drizzled overtop.
The coffee they roast therselves was good but the smallest cup was a 12oz. If they are catering to a sophistacted customer that knows their espresso based beverages, they should have an 8oz cup. I ordred an 8 oz double cappuccino and they served me 7oz in a 12oz cup. Big faux pas for a place that appears to be targeting a customer similar to me that understands quality and is prepared to pay for it but will talk about it either way after the fact. LOL
The teas are Meriage from France. One of my favorite teas and they served it in a german insulated pot which is a nice touch. I had Marco Polo that I used to buy from Urban Tea Merchant. Was served nicely in the pot but was luke warm. Shouldn't be too hot but it was just luke warm.
Also had a dessert the second time I dropped in. It was ok but not incredible. Tasted store bought and the whipped cream topping was from a can. They did do a chocolate drizzle which was a nice touch.
Overall they hopefully will work out the inconsistencies and upgrade the food. The service is quite good. They also appear to only open at 11am but maybe that is a print error. Seems a bit strange for a coffee house to open at 11am for lunch. -

I was looking forward for this place to open since it is close to my place, but I am a bit disappointed;/ It doesn't look cozy inside at all, and you feel cramed in the little seating area. Not a place for endless catching up with your girlfriends definitely!
On to the coffee - latte is huge, it feels like I am drinking milk with a bit of coffee - oops! They didn't have half of the menu available when I went, and that is a bit unprofessional if you ask me, esp. because I wasn't first in line to get there, I waited about 2 months to try it! So it's not like you can blame it on we-just-opened-and-are-still-learning kinda thing!
I tried a piece of chocolate cake which looked lovely, but didn't deliver. It was a bit better than sugary safeway cake.
Overall, I wasn't impressed!Listed in: Chocolate?! You had me at…

When I saw that a local coffee shop was opening I was excited. Could it be? A non-Starbucks cafe that I could support?? Well it took them a long time to actually open and when they did I was perplexed by their hours. 10am-10pm. What?? Placed ideally in front of a busy #5 bus stop it made no sense to me that they not be open first thing in the morning.
At least eventually they realized this and changed their hours but this initial blunder to me reflects the lack of attention and thought (in my humble opinion) that went into this place.
When I think of cafe, I think of warm cozy, magazines to browse, comfy chairs or even maybe a sofa to lounge on and catch up with friends. So to me the stark black and white art deco-like design is all wrong for a local coffee joint. Nothing about it makes me want to sit down. In fact everything about it makes me want to run in the other direction.
But let's get to the coffee...admittedly, I only went because someone was passing out free coffee coupons one morning. So after a walk today I decided to take advantage. I walked in to, well, an empty room. Kinda sad really. I opted for a decaf americano because if a cafe can make that well, you know they are solid. Needless to say, when I got home I took out my stove-top espresso maker and made myself a good cup. There was no depth in the flavour of the coffee, it seemed like the beans were maybe old or stale. This is why decaf tells you a lot about a place. I love coffee but caffeine kills me so I truly appreciate when cafes don't forget about us intolerants.
I had high hopes for this place. I really did. I do my best to support local businesses in my neighborhood, but I won't be going back for seconds and have a feeling this place won't be around too long. -

Table service in a cafe, I almost feel like I should order food...
Needless to say, the invite in the menu to come in, sit, have a coffee, get cozy and just read a book doesn't really work here. It's a waffle house cafe, not a coffee cafe. The atmosphere is too restaurant, not cozy-neighbourhood-coffee-shop. They shouldn't try to sell themselves that way. Which sucks, because they've got the cheapest steamed milk in the hood! -
Review from Jenna L.
I've been wanting to try this coffee joint for months but never had a chance. Anyways, I was interested in trying their Mariage tea in Wedgewood tea cup. It certainly was a lovely experience! Although I was keep eyeing another table for their gorgeous tea cups. Which tea would I have to order to get mine served in those!!!!!
The latte and cappuccino were decent. But the overall service was excellent, as the servers seem to enjoy working and come around to check how things are tasting. I had a half order of waffles with ice cream and strawberries. This was nothing extraordinary. I wouldn't order this next time. Just espresso drinks or tea. The decor is modern and clean. The floors are clean and the place is kept very clean on busy Saturday afternoon. -

Atmosphere: Nothing fancy, no colors that stand out. A lot of white with mirrors, however, this is not to look ghetto but really well done, almost classy with a nice table setting which is unique in it's own right for a coffee shop. Clean and bright décor.
Service: Was awesome. Our waitress was very helpful and noticed by spill on the table and wiped it right away. She was very attentive. They didn't take Visa which pissed me off since I was slightly over my bill. I had some cash, however, considering the price they charge for the food in drink, you would think that they would give you the option of using Visa. The good thing is that they allowed me to use both my Social Shopper Coupons at the same time which was the saving grace of having this review go from 2 stars to 3.
Food: The food is pricey at $12 for 1 large waffle with 1 tbsp of ice cream and canned fruit. I had a social shopper coupon which gave me $10 worth for $5 which was a saving grace, however, there are plenty of other places in the downtown area which serves the same for 1/2 the cost. The tea was $6 per cup. I am a huge tea fanatic and I know my teas. I know that they offer specialty teas, however, most are easy to obtain at Shaktea on Main @ 20th. I get all my tea loose and for 4 oz which makes 200 cups approx, the cost per cup to the restaurant would be, assuming they purchase in bulk would be less than 25 cents per cup, therefore, not understanding the high inflation cost, even at the standard restaurant practice of 30% inflation. In other words, save your money on the tea, just ask for hot water and buy some loose tea to drink at home. Even though these are French teas which is hard to find served in the city, French teas are now available in loose form from most specialty shops. If I was passing in the area I would go in to order some pastries from the window and skip the sit down service. Their sandwiches looked awesome and maybe I would go back in the future if I had a spare $10 on a sandwich. Most of the stuff on the menu can be obtained at the supermarket, sandwich material included. For 1/2 the price it's best to go to an Italian meat shop and get a sandwich made with more quality and love.
