Review from DineoutGal A.

I have been wanting to try this place for sometime but was a little skeptical about an Indian restaurant in the 'burbs (near St. Vital mall of all places). But to my surprise this place is good as I've returned a few times.
It's a small but well decorated - not traditional in East Indian furnishings as it leans to more modern decor. There are lots of small tables ranging from 2 to 4 seats each; the place can probably hold about 25 people. There is a buffet available, $15.99 for dinner and offers a small but decent array of popular Indian dishes (veg and non-veg). My first visit here was on a quiet weeknight so I opted for the menu instead of the buffet. The server/owner is very friendly and very passionate about his food. Water Lily is halal and the family is from Bangladesh so the dishes taste different from the other Indian restaurants in the city. I was informed that everything from the sauces to the samosas to the desserts are all made-in-house.
From my visits I've tried a number of items, you can request the level of heat you want in your dishes. I've been ordering dishes at a "7" (out of 10) because it was family style and I was sharing. A level 7 has a good "medium" level of heat, meaning that I could taste the heat but it was not overwhelming at all. There is a fabulously spicy green sauce that you can ask for that is a "10" heat level so I added that to my dishes as a top up!
The place has a signature appetizer dish called "Aloo Tikki Chaat" ($3.99) - it is worth ordering. It's a warm potato patty that's stuffed with veggies and layered with coriander sauce, tamarind, yogurt, spices and crumbled chips. The chip part sounds odd but it all works. It's good to share between two people. The "papdi chaat" ($3.99) is similar to the aloo tikki chaat with some additional ingredients and more of a tang. The samosas ($2.99 with chicken or beef) are filled with 40 grams of ingredients. The shell isn't too thick with a good texture, both the chicken and beef are good but definitely more subtle in spices. I probably wouldn't order the samosas again.
The paneer naan ($3.49) is delicious but it wasn't made in a tandoor. The chicken malai kebab ($11.99) is white meat marinated with cream, ginger, garlic, green chili and baked with cheese. Then it's topped with red onions, cilantro and cucumber. Oh this is a wonderfully moist chicken in a beautiful sauce - I loved the taste of ginger. The cheese is subtle so it's not like you're getting an Indian enchilada. The palak paneer (10.99) was not my favourite as the flavour was a bit muted though the texture was very creamy and smooth. The vegetable biryani rice is quite flavourful and topped with raisins and cashews. The next two aren't listed on the menu but worth ordering if you want something different - the fish kofta which is like fish balls in a curry sauce and the potol (which is a veggie that tasted like a zucchini or okra).
The prices are similar to other Indian places but the portions here are smaller. But I think the quality is there so it is worth it. -
Review from John R.

It was this or another restaurant and we decided on this one, not a great way to start a review, but the way it happen. Get there and fine they got a good review in the free press for their family run restaurant. Started with the signature appetizer $4 and it was good. After that on to the two main courses which are served "family style" with rice. Tonight we choice Eggplant Bharta $12 ans Aloo Gobi $9 In this case the person I was with choice mild spice for both which turned out very good. The wine for the most part was an OK price for a restaurant, and the service was to notch. Yes I see myself back here again probably soon.
Last thing of note is they have a very good selection of vegan and vegetarian dishesListed in: Veg/Vegan places
