Good quality sushi at a very reasonable price. Best negitoro roll I've had in a while.

    I am now a fan.

Being on the site of the old Toyko Ichiban, Watami has some big shoes to fill.

Parking wasn't bad the day I went, but to be honest, I can see this lot overflowing.

The interior is typical Japanese-looking, with the fake paper walls and dark painted wood.

My buddy and I had a lobster hot pot for 2 (combo meal).  Items are listed below.

Ebi sunomono - actually quite pleasant, as this dish was way less sour than most other places around town.

Lobster sashimi boat - this was different.  The sashimi was super bland, but I guess that's not the fault of the restaurant.  There was some tobiko sprinkled on top.  The front half of the lobster was put as a decoration, and the staff told us that it would be used for the hot pot later.  There were also some pieces of salmon and tuna sashimi.  These had great texture and seemed quite fresh.  The wasabi is quite concentrated here.  Excellent.

Sushi - California roll, ebi, tamago, and inarizushi.  Pieces seemed fresh, and the rice was just right.

Lobster hot pot - udon noodles and assorted vegetables in a tasty miso soup base.

Ice cream - one giant scoop in a bowl.  Very decent size.  They have 2 flavours: mango and green tea.

So why only 3 stars? Value, value, value.  The food was somewhat good, but it wasn't $68 good (ie $34 per person before tax and tip).  I think the meal was worth more like $15-20.  My friend and I were tempted to grab some fast food afterwards. It simply wasn't filling enough.

I know the owner has the best of intentions, but he/she needs to look around and wonder why there are only 3 tables filled during dinner on a long weekend.

We got the 4 person dinner combo, which includes stone pot beef, lobster sashimi, lobster hot pot, clams, along with other stuff.  The food was 3 star quality but the service was pretty bad.  We ate for 3 hours because they kept getting our orders confused.  I will give them another star for giving us free food in the end.

There is no shortage of really good Japanese restaurants in Richmond, so it's a shame that Watami is hidden in a tiny corner strip mall with a parking lot that begs for an Austin Powers cart scene re-enactment to get in and out of. If people start liking it here enough, perhaps carpooling could be encouraged.

The food is great and there is plenty of large tables and even semi-private rooms that can accommodate groups. Our party got a spacious tatami room complete with the cut out hole in the floor for dangling our feet in and enjoyed excellent service from the knowledgeable black-clad team of young female servers as well as introductions for the dishes from the Japanese chef himself.

We literally ordered a little bit of everything, so can say confidently that it's all great. Small and tangily dressed fresh oysters, delicate maki, nigiri and cones, appetizing green and wakame salads, fragrant seafood udon and unagi don, monkfish liver, grilled saba, sashimi platters served with the chef's famous special soy sauce, ice creams in ginger, blood orange, and the rest of the expected Japanese flavours...and that's just all that I can remember!

I like Watami not for sushi, I can get that (good, bad or meh...) in any of hundreds of restaurants in the lower mainland. I go for the katsu don, they make perfect katsu don and few places can. They also have daily lunch specials for $7.50 that are great, but for me it's all about the katsu don.

I stopped by with the missus for some Japanese eats and we were pleased with our decision to go to Watami. Their curry rice is very good and their california rolls were some of the best I've ever had. Their cheesecakes were decorated beautifully and were absolutely to die for. Their chef was amusing since he would yell Japanese phrases now and then. The service was relatively fast and the food came quickly. Overall, a good dining experience.
