First off the bat, if your restaurant is named "Wang's", you probably shouldn't have a phallus-like fish in your logo, just sayin.'. Now that that is out of the way, the review.

I have been here a couple times before, so I thought this would be a good location to ring in the (Chinese) new year by stuffing my face with some good Chinese food, and Wang's didn't disappoint.

The restaurant is decorated with more subtlety and less kitsch than many Chinese restaurants, although it has a noticeable Chinese flare with some red lantern shades and ink paintings which are a nice choice instead of the typical water-colour landscapes. My other half and I arrive early as I wanted to beat any potential rush, but even at its worst, the front part of the restaurant was never much more than half full.

We order a few different dishes to cover our bases - almond chicken gai ding, black bean sauce beef, mushrooms with tender greens and a large order of steamed rice, as well as a pot of jasmine tea from their impressively large selection of teas. The food took a surprisingly long time to arrive considering only one table ordered before us, but fortunately my girlfriend and I are a talkative bunch....and there was a guy with a rat tail at the table next to us to judge and mock. Oh, and he had a borderline mullet too. When our food arrived, we realized we should have either ordered less or sat at a larger table because there was a LOT. The chicken was tender and plentiful although the mushrooms that came with the greens were on the chewy side, either from overcooking or because they were rehydrated, I'm not sure. The black bean beef was definitely the highlight - tender beef with lots of flavour and a bit of a spicy kick, you definitely want to try this dish.

Service was like it is at a lot of family restaurants - friendly and adequate, but it doesn't blow you out of the water.

There were lots of leftovers which made for a great lunch the next day and the bill came to less than $50 after tax and tip. For quality food and sheer dollar value,  Wang's is a great choice!

First off, no frozen stuff thrown in a deep fryer that you feel you could throw together better. No bottled sauces that taste like no name sweet n sour sauce, only great home made sauces that taste authentic.
This food looks and tastes more like a great Thai spot than ur everyday Chinese spot.
Lemon chicken great. Crispy shredded chilli beef was amazing and their house wine and springs rolls are pretty damn tasty.

What a great little spot. Once getting through the slightly complicated combinations of stairs and doors, one find themselves in a below street level restaurant. On this particularly cold evening, the space was brightly lit and the fireplace was on. Having selected this venue from Yelp reviews, we continued to mine the on-line info for our food choices. The egg rolls were fantastic with chunks of meat rather than the usual mush. The lemon chick had real chicken breasts smothered in a delicious sauce which I no doubt was made with real fresh lemons. The vegetable stir fry had identifiable bits of water chestnuts and bamboo shoots - what a delightful treat!

This place is definitely in the realm of Chinese restaurant royalty in Halifax. I am already making plans to return to try some of their hot schezuan dishes when the company allows.

3.5 stars - I know, indecisive! I love orange chicken which doesn't seem to be common on the menus in Halifax. I tried Wang's version of orange chicken which was more of a chicken stir fry with a sweet orange sauce, rather than being lightly breaded chicken in a rich orange sauce. The dish was good but the sauce was overly sweet and some of the veggies didn't seem to go with the dish. I would like to try something else at this restaurant, which is conveniently located near Spring Garden Rd. Don't be turned off that the restaurant is at the basement level - the interior is quite nice. I just wish their take out containers were plastic or boxes rather than styrofoam.

I've been back twice since, including a takeout box tonight for only $8.99! But the food was blah with a side of blah. The mixed vegetables were crispy and fresh plus the sauces are made in house but the sweet and sour chicken and egg fried rice were bland. I can tell you though one takeout box fed me and my husband for CHEAP.

I bought a "Kijiji Deal" for Wang's and thought I'd give it a try since it's close to work and convenient for lunch.

My husband and I were very impressed with their food!  He had the Lemon Chicken, which was delicious and not loaded with an overpowering, heavy sauce.  I had the Sweet & Sour Chicken Ball Combo which was equally pleasing.  I really enjoyed the Egg Fried Rice (I added Chicken).  It was not nearly as greasy as other places, and wasn't full of MSG.

The portions were quite large - we definitely didn't leave hungry...and the waitress was lovely - super nice and very helpful with menu choices.

Overall a great experience. We will definitely be going back again!

Wang's is a great addition to the South End. It is located in the basement of the red building next to the Trillium on South Park, one block away from the Clyde Street NSLC.

I used to go to Mr Changs for Chinese food but now that Wang's is nearby I have more choice.

The people who run Wang's have probably made the very best out of its location. There is of course not a lot of light down there, but at least its windows are fairly large for basement windows. The interior a nice combination of modern and traditional Chinese, it looks classy but in a simple way. It almost looks like the kind of place you'd expect in downtown Vancouver.

The food here is truly excellent. I've now had their Kung Po chicken, their sweet and sour chicken, their spring rolls, their egg rolls, and their egg fried rice, and it was always excellent. What I want to try in the future: the sesame shrimp bread, the lemon chicken, the crispy shredded chili beef, and the honey banana ball. The food here is a lot less greasy than at most "Chinese" restaurants, and the food retains a lot of its texture and flavour.

They also have great deals, such as the take-out box for $8.99: choose one meat dish, one vegetable dish, one rice/noodle option, and your choice or egg or spring roll, and off you go. It doesn't get much better than that. A very welcome addition in a city in which most good deals are restricted to lunch. I hope that Wang's will be well attended since I want it to stay here for a long time.

    Overall, highly recommended!

New place so I ordered delivery to see how good the food is compared to my usual Chinese spots. I think this place may have potential but right now it's mostly mediocre. I had the noodles with mixed vegetables, the beef and broccoli, wonton soup, egg roll and the deep-fried wontons. The soup was delicious and so was the eggroll. The noodles were pretty good but I was disappointed with the beef, completely disappointed. The student discount is a nice perk but I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.

It was dinner and a movie night on Tuesday, so based on its convenient proximity to the theatre and a kijiji deal I had recently acquired, I set off to check out Wang's for the first time. One of my co-workers raves, and I mean RAVES, about this place, so my hopes were high. We were there pretty early so had no trouble getting a table. Our server was friendly and gave us a helpful briefing on the menu before we ordered.  We settled on chicken with vegetables and garlic beef, and opted for the steamed rice (I knew I was going to be having movie treats later, so this was my attempt to remain somewhat virtuous in my food choices). The food arrived quickly, and in large portions... definitely no skimping on the meat (which is very important to me). The food tastes healthier than the 'North American Chinese food' many of us are used to, but doesn't sacrifice any of the flavor. Our server was lovely. She kept our water glasses filled and was kind enough to bring a fork and knife for my boyfriend, who is not very adept in the chopsticks department. With good food, great value, and wonderful service, Wang's is certainly a place I would go back to.

Had always frequented Fan's and Hong's Kitchen but decided to try Wang's on a Dealfind coupon.  The food was unique - the egg rolls had chunks of meat - quite different from the traditional shredded veggie and meat style we're use to but still very good, and the sauces were excellent - obviously all made from scratch.  Quite frankly, the Almond Chicken Soo gai was the best I've had anywhere, (including Boston's Kowloon's) and the Lemon chicken (chef's specialty) was also excellent.  The Black Bean Sauce Beef was a bit on the hot spicy side but I loved the flavor and would definitely order this again on the next visit.  They told us they buy all veggies fresh each day and that was obvious to all 4 of us.  Service was excellent by the always- smiling waitress but that wasn't difficult since we were the only customers seated in the restaurant at the time.  If you are looking for Chinese food with a different flair, then this is the place to go.  Although I would still return to Fan's (I live in Dartmouth) - this restaurant is worth the drive and I will definitely be going back.
