I'm no artist and my artisitic talents are quite poor but I went into Wallack's with a buddy who is a casual artist and enjoys painting and drawing.
He was relatively new to Ottawa so based on name recognition only I suggested Wallack's. I had planned to just snoop around the store while he picked up some supplies. However, the staff member who helped my friend was so passionate and knowledgeable about art and supplies that he had us both engaged about products they carry at Wallack's.
The store clerk advised my friend on what paints he should avoid for the project he was working on and also gave him a few tips which wasn't really expected either.
As I continued to just poke around the store I could tell me friend was getting quite excited to get home and try out the tips the man had given him for his painting project.
I left the store, not having bought anything, but feeling like these people were pretty good experts and helpful so I'd recommend them to any local artists or people needing supplies for arts or crafts or other handy projects. -

Wallack's is my favourite place to go for affordable paint supplies. Now, I should clarify I'm not a skilled or trained painter AT ALL. It's just something I like to do from time to time and Wallack's is my favourite place to support that casual hobby. I'm not entirely sure this place is regarded by professional painters as a great art source, but I do know my boyfriend's art instructor brought his class here for supplies and my painter friend seems to only shop here. Plus this store has survived as a major art supplies provider in Ottawa for 60 years.
They have a great variety of supplies and a huge selection of canvasses that seem to constantly be on sale. Their staff is also knowledgeable and they're often art students. -

Just like all of the Wallack's stores, you can find a ton of great art supplies for all of your projects. The main problem I find with this specific location is that I don't believe it's fully accessible. They offer so many supplies that I find the store very cluttered. Every time I've been in, there have always been markers and wood pieces and things like that on the floor in the isles. The isles themselves aren't large or long enough to hold everything, so some sections are a bit scattered and it might be harder to find what you're looking for, though the staff is very knowledgeable and you can always just ask. The lighting is dimer as well, so all in all, I find that it's much cozier and warmer than the other locations.
