7 reviews for Wah Court Restaurant
dam, i didn't make the first review on this place.
this is the only place on earth i wanted a first review.
I'm korean, so is my family, we used to come here once a month from Kalamazoo Michigan to eat dim sum.
I cry, i cry for nostalgia of eating the best dim sum of my life and then going next door to eat the best custard bun of my life.
Long live goddam almond pudding.
While I have yet to discover a solid dim sum restaurant in Detroit, I honestly don't think that will be at all necessary as Wah Court Restaurant (WCR) is literally a hop, skip, and jump away. Across Ambassador Bridge, that is.
The restaurant is every bit deservant of a five-star rating and not enough words could possibly encapsulate the awesomeness that is WCR. With the exception of the vegetarian fried tofu skin, everything on the list of dim sum list proved to be phenomenal. Knowing how picky I am when it comes to my favorite meal of the weekend, that says a lot. My favorites included the fried shrimp balls, seaweed and shrimp rolls, baked bbq pork pastries, and the shrimp stuffed fried tofu.
Dim sum service here is a bit tricky. No carts. No surly ladies. Rather, two or three sweet youngsters will carry trays of the dim sum dishes and will stop by each and every table. The one thing that I wish the restaurant had provided was a sign of some sort that would signal satiety -- much like the ones provided at Brazilian steakhouses. Instead, the poor lads will continue to swing by your table as you're holding your bulging stomach in a state of food coma, because you have finished that tenth (or was it twentieth) small plate.
The best part of it all? The fact that we managed to walk away -- having consumed/sampled a good 95% of the dim sum menu -- paying $9/pop. WCR must have been running some sort of special that we were unaware of, since there was an automatic 10% deduction off our total bill.
Who's complaining? Certainly not me!
When I was young, this was my family's favorite dim sum place. It was always packed but the wait and the drive across the border were worth it. We tried a few other places in Windsor but we always came back to Wah Court. My favorite dim sum is the chung fan - beef or shrimp wrapped in wide rice noodles (or should I say, noodle sheets). Plus Wah Court is super-convenient: Two right turns off the Ambassador Bridge and you're there!
Sadly, we've all since moved 2,000 miles away. I had the chance to return here recently when I came back to Detroit for my high-school reunion. The food and service are still as good as ever. No matter where I live, Wah Court will always have a place in my heart.
Wah Court is, in my opinion, the only decent Chinese restaurant in the Metro Detroit area. From their standard menu to their Dim Sum brunch, this place is absolutely the way to go.
If I want Chinese in this part of the world, I'll grab the passport and come here every time.
Quite delicious! Be sure to try their tea!!!
Four hungry people stopped by. They offer dim sum for dinner time -- this was the reason we chose this place out of a number of restaurants in this China Town. One of our party was originally from China and she picked up a noodle soup to share. Clear chicken broth, tender / juicy chicken pieces, bok choy and yellow Chinese noodle.... wow soo delicious.
Steamed shrimp dumpling, beef shumai, steamed calamari, curried calamari, pork bun, fried rice, ribs, etc. etc. Cannot remember all! The tea was flower tea, not jasmine, I think it was chrysanthemum. Smelled really good. The server was very attentive, unlike many Chinese dim sum places, and even my Chinese friend was surprised :P
The food was all good. Really good!!! Amazingly delicious!!!!!!
HERE IS THE SURPRISE!!!!
The total bill was ONLY CAN$26 = US$22!!!!!!
(Tax incl.)
This really was for all of us! Four people!
I wish I had this place not so far from where I live.
I've been eating dim sum from the Wah Court since grade school. This place has the BEST dim sum(I've been to a few out of state)! Before all the strenuous checking at the Canadian Bridge and currency rates changing, this place used to be packed every wk end in the morning.I'm talking about long lines outside. It's worth the wait. The best thing about dim sum style restaurants are that you get to see and smell what you are about to dig into. I highly recommend the XO noodle rolls(has a nice smokey taste because of the wok they use), har gaw( shrimp dumpling),shumai( pork and shrimp dumpling with yellow wonton wrapper), bao( bbq buns),cheong fun(rice noodle rolls), wu gok(taro dumpling), and turnip/taro cakes. And for the really adventurous-they have chicken feet, but beware of the cartilaginous texture and small bones. The dinner menu is really good too!
All the employees and Tony the owner are super nice, be patient with them if they don't get to your table on time, there is plenty of small dishes to go around. They will go the extra mile if you want something in particular that they aren't serving at the moment.
Extra Tip: They get their baked goodies from the bakery across the street by the fish store.
