So delicious!
This was my second visit here and I thought the food was fabulous.
We started with the Coconut Shrimp and Bruschetta. The Coconut Shrimp was exactly what I had wanted. Crispy, golden and sweet with coconut. Geez, I want some now.
My main was the lamb (I really like lamb!) and I thought I had added the 1/2 lb. of crab legs. When my entrée came, there were no room for legs as there was 1 GIANT crab leg on it.
This thing was as long as my arm, and over 1 inch thick. I thought that it might be tough or chewy, but it was so tender! I found it quite hilarious that I actually had to cut the chunks I pulled out with a knife! I'm used to more of a 'pulled crab' look on my plate. BONUS - the shell was scored so I didn't look like a fool hacking at it at a fine dining restaurant.
This place seems to specialize in certain types of ocean fare. I'm a bit of a crab/shrimp/lobster kind of gal. I'd love to try the oysters with someone who could/would appreciate them. Everything here tastes fresh, which is good when it comes to seafood. I think I'll make this the new 'go-to' place for special occasions. It's top-notch. -

My bf and I went to Von's last night for his birthday. This was our second visit to this establishment. I ordered the same thing that I ordered the first time since it was delicious (escargots, goat cheese filet mignon). We also ordered oysters to start as we had never tried them and they were $1 each til 6:30pm. So we did and took the waitresses advise- it was alright. The escargots were also just ok, way too much mustard seeds (and I love mustard- so this was too much). The steak was delicious and flavorful as were the side dishes. My filet was cooked a little more that I like, which was the only down side- I like mine rare and it was done more to a med. rare. My bf had the prime rib- it was really fatty and his was rare (he order med. rare). But the steak was flavorful. As for desert, I had the flourless cake as I am celiac. It was alright- probably would not order again- too dry, thick and quite sweet. I should have ordered the creme brulee which I really liked the first time I was there.
The staff were friendly and were accomodating to my severe allergy to wheat which was appreciated. The only thing about the service is that it is slow. It took 10-15 min to have someone come to our table to greet us. Then just as long to get drinks. Food came out slow too. So if you are in a rush (or hungry/thirsty) you may not appreciate this.
Prices are reasonable (cost with tip $185 for 2 people including food, wine and nightcap), atmosphere nice, food overall good, borderline very good. I will go back again, but I am in no rush as it is a little pricey and I am a stickler for service. -

Superb menu, excellent service, great ambiance.
Nice wine list.
Some of the best steak I have eaten in Alberta, definatley one of the best steak places in edmonton (if not the best!)
Our waiter was very knowledgable and personable, he didn't hover, just knew the right time to come over all night.
A great dining experience.
I highly recommend this restaurant. -

We always go here when we want steak, as it has to be one of the best, if not THE best, in the city. I always get the fillet mignon, while my wife usually prefers the bison. I had to knock a star off because they've gotten rid of some menu items I loved, loved, loved - the awesome onion rings, and the steamed baby potatoes. I guess that's what happens when a new chef comes aboard.
I hate ordering a steak and having it either undercooked, or overcooked. I've never had that problem at Von's, which says a lot about the staff they have. The servers are always professional, and can answer any questions you may have about the food, or how it's prepared. That's not to say they're stuffy - I've had lots of fun joking around with servers here. We usually prefer to sit in the lounge, as it's a bit less formal than the dining room; you still get excellent service.
Von's also holds a special place in my heart - my wife proposed to me there (yup, she proposed to me!).Listed in: The most awesome places…

Von's has hands down the best prime rib in the whole city, and they serve it with their delicious red skinned mashed potatoes (same pre-packaged frozen ones everyone serves but still yummy!) as well as their Yorkshire pudding which I can never get enough of! Oh man just thinking about it is making me salivate.
I love pouring the au jus all over the prime rib and the potatoes than dipping it in the spicy horseradish that comes with it! So good!
I have also tried the blueberry chicken they serve, it would have been good except it was so over salted it was almost inedible for me, I could not finish it. That is the only fault I have ever had from here was the over salted food, other than that everything is delicious!
I would highly recommend this place as somewhere to impress a date. It's classy and upscale and the service is excellent.
On Monday nights they also have $1 fresh oysters! Everyone should know that oysters are aphrodisiacs ; ) -

After a VERY long while, I return to Von's Steakhouse and Oyster Bar. Mind you, the last time I was at this restaurant was when I first moved here. Back then, I recall it being a bit dark and we sat in an area with booths. On this evening, the 6th of May, we were in the main dining room, which was quite nice and very open with many 2 to 4 seat tables. One thing I should say is that when we first walked in, I could smell a "meat" smell--not bad, however, it smelled like there was meat and thus a "steakhouse"...I should say that when we left, I couldn't smell it anymore...the old "olfactory nerves" did their job I guess. On to the meal:
We ordered a bottle of champagne (I am still always bewildered and shocked at the mark up, but such is the life of order anything beyond water anywhere) and to start the dish of 1lb mussels with the gorgonzola sauce. This sounds heavy, however, it wasn't. The mussels were quite nice and the taste not heave at all. They were enough to share for sure and so we did as we awaited our mains. I ordered the "Oscar Filet" as I wanted both the "Steak" and "Fish"--my steak was medium rare (almost "alla fiorentina" but not bloody, so for you all that think that medium rare is more medium than rare, here it is more rare than medium), quite tender and topped with a seafood medley of crab and shrimp. The sides were mashed red potatoes and vegetables of the season. All tasty and service quite good to boot. My companion ordered the Ahi Tuna which he said was quite good with the risotto (a hint of lemon--VERY tasty, I must say). We also ordered a side of asparagus. The one thing we forgot to ask as did they, was to put the hollandaise on the side....the sauce was good, but heavy and we prefer to "dip" them as we choose. For dessert, we weren't disappointed: I ordered the mocha flavoured creme brulee' (a pretty good size portion) and my companion the bailey's chocolate mousse....with mini donut holes (warm and 6 of them!). His dessert was topped with a little mountain of whipped cream...we could have both had his and been full. In fact, they should note that it could be for two....the mousse was in a coffee cup, so you know it was a pretty good size....oh and delicious...despite our complaints at the amount, we did manage to finish them both....however, we wouldn't have complained if each one had been a bit smaller ;-]
The staff was quite attentive and the atmosphere there is more laid back, but also quite special occasion....we were happy witnesses to a "wedding proposal" -- a very quite one, but nonetheless, he got down on one knee and presented his sweetheart with a little box....yes, she did say "yes."
**Oh, when you park in the "paid parking" don't forget to take part of the parking slip in...they reimburse you the $5 you pay :-]! -

Food is fantastic, the staff is fun to be around..only issue maybe drinks are pretty pricey...love the dark sophisticated atmosphere. Want impress a date? take her here..or him. I have had the prime rib, steak, seafood, and chicken. ALL GOOD. love the au jus that you put on the primerib. Parking a bit of an issue too.

I happened to be in Edmonton on a Tuesday...bonus...2 for 1 prime rib night. My appetite happens to be in a later time zone...bonus...feeling pretty hungry during happy hour. So a dozen oysters and a slab of prime rib later and I'm feeling like I found a gold mine...thanks yelpers. When we arrived just before 6pm they told us that they were booked for the evening, but we could dine in the bar. So I sat in the oyster bar with my colleague from Japan and I think it worked out perfect...the restaurant side looked pretty dark and a little too romantic for a business dinner. We started off with happy hour beers and "buck a chuck" oysters. They had a selection of about 10 oyster varieties from British Columbia waters and about 5 more from the East coast. Someone at Von's knows oysters. The prime rib was some of the best I've ever sliced up. It had an outstanding flavor-encapsulating crust and was roasted a to a perfectly uniform deep pink from edge to edge...only time and love can do that. And the paired au jus was pretty respectable although I didn't use much...I was enjoying the true flavor of beef that is raised naturally on the plains of Alberta. 5 stars for great service and a memorable meal...and if you go on a Tuesday during happy hour, your wallet will be thankful. If I'm able to visit the area again Von's may be one of the reasons.

Von's Steak & Fish House one of the better restaurants in the city. Some of the dishes really disappointed me but they have amazing Prime Rib.
The service is above average. They treat you with such elegance here, you don't experience that often. They have TV screens everywhere, which might bother some people because the restaurant looks really classy. Some people who come here might not like that extra noise but I thought it was cool. They didn't over do it.
Everything here was done with quality and class I think. Everyone should check it out. -

I had a very nice experience the last time I went to Von's.
My boyfriend's dad came in from Toronto and he wanted steak. We wanted to take him somewhere local instead of a chain (like The Keg or Ruth's Chris) and this seemed like an obvious choice.
We made a reservation the day of and there didn't seem to be an issue. When we showed up, they put us in (what felt like) the lounge. For a high end restaurant, I expected a nice quiet table, not one that was set in front of a television set playing basketball. Of course, my boyfriend and his dad were not disappointed by this, but I sure was.
The prices are up there, so we don't go here unless it is a special occasion. The food is spectacular. I have always been impressed with the food, but the portion sizes are so small. I guess this might be part of the whole "fine-dining-thing."
My boyfriend and I ordered a side of veggies because we both ordered potatoes with out meal (I was somewhat disappointed that we were only given one option for a side) but when we got our food, we realized it was not going to be enough. We asked our waiter for a side of mushrooms as well.
He brought us a HUGE side of mushrooms, and said something about us sharing and he gave us extra. That was really nice, because of course, he didn't have to do that.
All the food was amazing, the service was good and the price was high. I would recommend this place to anyone. It has a glamorous feel to it and the experience feels like getting your money worth.
I have heard over and over how good the oysters are at this place and I have yet to try them. Perhaps you should go try them and then tell me if they are worth the hype? -

Von's definitely has a top-notch beef source. The quality of the meat was as good as any. I had the filet, which was tender and perfectly cooked. -1 for not having a creamed spinach side. All of their sides are potato based, so they definitely need some more imagination to their menu here.
