This is my favorite coffee anywhere. Hands down (sorry Bumpy's!). Yes, Artie is a nutjob and a half, but he roasts his own beans and he does it beautifully. It's a five minute drive from the Vancouver airport, and a necessary stop for me every time I'm in the area.

If you're looking for a coffee house where you can sit with your laptop, abuse the free wi-fi and wax philosophical with the other pseudo intellectuals while you listen to terrible indie bands too loudly on your headphones... this place is not for you. If you want to know what coffee is supposed to taste like, take the five minute detour from YVR :)

Be careful when you walk into this place, owner Artie ( if that's his real name) is always prepared to throw out anyone who does not know what they want to drink or order.  Coffee is good but don't need the attitude or whining.

I walked in to try a cup of latte from Viva Java but at the end getting booted out for wanting to go to the bathroom while he is making my coffee. He told me to get my coffee, pay and I can go wherever the hell I want to go. I was shocked by his comments. The owner was swearing harshly and acted like he wanted to punch me out. If you want a good cup of coffee like the previous reviews said and willing to take the humiliation, this is the place for you.

I agree with the previous reviewer.  Easily my favorite coffee place in Metro Vancouver.  Quite accessible as well if you take to oak street bridge and get on/off at Shell.  I try and stop by every time I am near the airport.
Arte (o/o) is definitely a character and enjoyable to watch when he gets on a rant.  It is a roasting shop as well and without pretense so darker than most locations.  Why not order some beans while you are at it and then come back with an order for a custom roasted blend.
If image is what you want then go ahead and walk on by with your average logo'd cup in your hand.

Have been going to Viva Java for years.  I have introduced many people to the place, all who have gone back.

Some might be put off by Arte's "soup nazi"-esque style, but if you're able to embrace the uniqueness of it all, then you are in for a treat with this place.

If nothing else, you'll have a story to remember, and a GREAT cup of coffee to go with it.

Hands-down the best cup of coffee you'll find in Metro Vancouver!

The owner custom-blends and custom-roasts his coffee fresh every day, using a unique 7 bean blend, and I go out of my way to drop by here for a cup of brew coffee.

Be warned, however, that the proprietor has a unique style of service to match his unique coffee.  Styling himself after the Soup Nazi from the classic Seinfeld series, the "Coffee Nazi" will definitely keep you on your toes.  Don't order a tall or venti anything unless you want to receive a tongue lashing about "starsucks"

Taken with a grain of salt, the Coffee Nazi provides an interesting --- and honest -- break from an otherwise corporate-dominated coffee world.

Go for a cup.  You won't be disappointed.
