Review from Luke R.
Two friends and I stopped by Viphalay last minute for a late Sunday dinner. It's a very small place so usually parties require reservation (which was asked of us when we came in). We didn't have a reservation, but the hostess was very friendly and asked us to wait at the very small bar for a table to be ready. Ten minutes later we were seated.
Viphalay's is simply decorated but it hints at class and character; the focus is on service and food which did not disappoint. A great place for a casual second date?
It's clear the kitchen uses quality ingredients--I would be surprised if all their curries and sauces were not made from scratch in house. My friend has random cravings for their Red Wine Shrimps appetizer (aka Goong Laow Dang), and I see why. I couldn't taste the red wine, but it must have all dissolved into the complex flavors that bound together the slightly sweet tangy.
I'm a huge fan of basil, so the red curry dish was my choice for satisfying a basil and coconut fix. We also ordered the brown curry (I had a hand in this as well since I love peanuts in savory dishes) and a noodle dish which I cannot for the life of me remember the name of. All were excellent. Really. Not too salty (which I find some places are) and not too spicy (perhaps if you love spice ask whether they could add a little something to the red curry). The red curry was refreshing and he brown curry, which contained potatoes, was pretty substantial. And who doesn't love a good thick noodle? For vegetarian fair, hit up the curries--meat is optional for them all.
Two of us were hung over and the third doesn't drink so we weren't able to try their wines and beers, but I think any of their dishes would be nicely paired with something on their drink menu. -

I specifically am making sure that I have the correct address. For it is the one on 99th Avenue about which I am making these comments, NOT the one on 95th Street.
I originally had tried to make reservations for Viphalay on 95th Street, since that is where we have gone in the past and enjoyed it immensely. However, having stopped by the location to make reservations (I was in the neighbourhood), I saw the signage on the door in which the owners indicated a new location. I called, made the reservation and thought: "Great! another one!" So much for that....
We went on the 27th of January and I was so looking forward to it since we hadn't been in several months...all I can say is: Disappointment.
We got into the new place (it is one of the "heritage homes" on 99th that has been renovated and though quaint, there is NO room for the waitresses to move about, let alone anyone else really). From what I could tell, there may be an upstairs, but not sure.
In any case, the person that seated us was nice enough and we waited for our server. She too was pleasant enough, however, she spoke very fast and not loud enough for us to hear her when she spoke. Having left us with the menus, we wanted to order wine, however, she never brought the wine list nor did she ask us if we wanted wine when she did bring us the list....my first concern was right here.... My second concern was when I asked about the servings as I remember they have always been quite large (having done "family style" portions at the 95th Str. location), we wanted to double check so we would order the right amount for us to share or our own so as to not order too much food. The waitress indicated that the portions were single and so we ordered. For an appetizer, we split an order of the Wontons, which were good. For my main, I ordered the Green Curry Seafood with steamed rice and my companion the Pad Thai. My companion's Pad Thai was good. Mine? I couldn't really tell you since my "seafood" was missing....oh, sorry, there were 3 shrimp and I counted about 20 pieces of vegetables.... I wouldn't have ever done such a thing, however, I was SO overwhelmed by what my dish DIDN'T look like, I just stared at it and even asked the waitress if she had brought me the correct order. She said "yes" and didn't ask anything else. I didn't say anything else. I basically had steamed rice with green curry "gravy" for dinner.....
Thank goodness for dessert as it wasn't a total loss. I ordered the mango rice which for someone who isn't crazy about mangoes, I enjoyed (plus, I was still hungry). My companion ordered the Banana Sundae, which he enjoyed before at the 95th Str. location.
The good news is that the 95th Str. location is under renovations too since they had to change a few things in the kitchen.... What I am really hoping is to return there and all will be well in the world, and I can enjoy the Green Curry again. Maybe, as based on this experience (yes, it SO took me for a loop), I won't be rushing back there soon..... -

The opening of Viphalay has been carefully followed and excitedly anticipated by my office for the last few months. After an initial attempt to go for lunch without a reservation we finally made it back today (with a reservation booked last week).
I was a few minutes late so I didn't see how quickly we were seated but the service during the meal was decent. Our water glasses were constantly refilled and the server took our orders and wrapped up our food in a timely manner. The only off putting thing about the restaurant was that our food came out at different times. Perhaps this is a normal thing in Thai restaurants but it meant that our food went cold while we politely waited for the last entree to arrive.
The food was amazing! I ordered the Pad Thai, while my coworkers ordered the Drunken Noodles w/ Chicken and lunch special (sorry I don't remember what it was). All of us agreed the portion sizes were plentiful and super yummy. The food was slightly on the pricey side with each meal running us about $15, but we did all have leftovers to take home for dinner.
Will definitely be returning for lunch again! -

Since this place is so close to my office, it's great for business lunches. This time I tried the special of the day, 2 shrimp and pineapple triangles, and jasmine rice with the chicken, peppers, onions, and nuts. The food was delicious but they put too many onions for my liking The place gets noisy and a little crowded so be prepared to raise your voice. I would make recommendations as it gets full at lunch.
