Review from Sean K.
I've been a little delinquent in my reviews recently but I'm coming out of my self-imposed moratorium to, as the french say, note that this place kicks ass.
Apologies for the 'rough around the edges' description but I really had not thought much about this place other than to have it catch my eye as I walked up 7th - carefully placed between the porn mega-boutique and 2 boots as it were, it didn't necessarily leap out at me as 'this place will have excellent, reasonably priced wine and possibly the best meat and cheese plate in the city!'.
You know what I mean? I think it was reasonable ignorance on my part.
But it did have just that plus fantastic service and well, I just can't wait to go back. Its funny because there are some places that I think are primed to be this place but, well, they just aren't. And I've been kind of disappointed in those places but not so much that I'm going to bad-mouth them here. But still, seriously people let's raise the bar a bit.
One small downside - its really quite small. Like if you're at a table, people are going to have to shimmy by between your chair and the bar. But its NYC, what did we expect? -

I do hh with my ladies on Monday in the city. I've been dying to check out this wine bar so we decide to hit it up. Sweet. The place is pretty crowded for a Monday at 730, however, this place is small as in 5 tables small. Dimly lit with some great old school French music going on in the background, the owner was kind and found us space in the back. We start our evening with FREE samplings of their St. Tropez rose. Delicious. We move on to order a few more bottles and a few items of food to sample. They have a super limited food menu as well mostly filled with cheeses and dried meats but sandwiches as well. Bottles of wine start here at about $45, so be prepared to drop a few bones to get your swill on.
We went with the salmon tartar and the sud d'ouest sandwich. The tartare came with some cut up baguette toasted slices. The salmon was off a bit. Something about the flavor was kept this meal from reaching its full potential in my meal. The sud d'oeust sandwich of duck breast, brie and honey was solidly good with a side salad. I wasn't overly impressed with the food but I will most definitely try something again when I return.
The meal ended with a mini glass of sparkling rose wine. Well thank you Vin Sur Vingt, what a great way to end the evening. The owners and servers all seemed extremely warm and inviting and this place was a classy way to spend an evening with great friends and great wine. -
Review from Sabin C.
Scarsdale, NY
I walked in with high expectations and right around 6:30pm so it was still light outside. The first mission was to find a seat at the bar. Do I sit in the middle or next to the entrance? Where? I was standing around like a deer caught in headlights, while almost thinking let me go somewhere else rather than ask someone to move (i need a drink or food or something at this point badly). So I asked the bar tender, where should I sit. He happily asked one couple to move over. Yay! I got a seat at the bar with enough room to breathe!
Now for some wine... at first I was thinking, where's all the cool wine by the glass but after looking closely it's all with the bottles on the list. Being that it's only French wines it's a different format to some other wine bars. No harm done. I asked for a recommendation before getting the one that I actually wanted, a 2005 Grand Cru Bordeaux. The young French guy was pretty helpful and patient - imagine that. I also ordered the Croque Monsieur.
The seat next to me was empty so a fellow Yelper, which I found out later, sat down and we soon started chatting about wine and food! It was great company.
The food arrived soon enough and was tasty, however I thought it could have been made with less cheese on top, other than that no issues. The salad was very nice too.
So as far as places go this is a really good local wine bar and the later you go (after sunset) the more charming it gets. I love candles lit at the bar!
The Good:
- Wine selection
- Decent menu
- Charming
The Bad:
- Tiny space
- Might have to wait for a seat
- Hard to eat if you're not sitting down
The Ugly:
- Nothing
Enjoy! -

Large selection of wine, but not much beer selection (it is a wine bar, so that's to be expected). Other than that, it has a nice vibe and the service is parfait. Would definitely go again. Also, the people it attracts seem quite nice. Some bars attract the wrong crowd, but this one was nice. The music selection was nice as well and it was not too loud to where you could not hear a conversation.
Other places could learn from their simple yet effective model. -

Tiny, cozy french wine bar with lots of potential. But they service was uneven...the server acted like he had somewhere to be and couldn't be bothered to recommend wines or chat with us about their selection. Leave the attitude in France, please.

Great wine selection, service, and not-too-bad menu. Very small and lacking in ambiance. Would come back if I was in the area and there wasn't a wait, but I would not go out of my way to return here.

I have rate anything, but in the last few months I've been to VSV about 8 times and each time I find another wine I love. It has a great intimate atmosphere and great for a first date spot. I can only speak for weeknights excluding Friday as I always felt that since it is a small place that it would be too crowded / loud to conduct a conversation. With that said, this hidden gem is wonderful during the week. I would love to hear how it is on a Friday or Saturday?

Cute spot for a romantic drink or people watching. It's a cozy wine bar and the dim, candle-lit atmosphere made it very quaint. Attire is casual but I found myself wishing I had dolled up a tad bit!
You can expect the typical French food menu but not much of a selection if you want to really chow down. Drink your fill and when you're hungry, hop on over to the many food options in the area.

Transported me to France :) I love it here. My boyfriend treated me to a lovely little wine tasting and I fell in love with the wine! hehehe Fabulous wait service and they are very knowledgable of their wines. So good!

Review from Justin A.
This is truly a special spot in the West Village. Not only is Vin Sur Vingt cozy and romantic, but they also have one of the best wine lists in NYC. I just wish I knew more about French wine to truly enjoy this place, but alas, the server was very helpful in selecting wine that matched my taste.
Don't expect to come here and sit for an hour. To truly experience this place, spend a few hours here sampling wine you won't find anywhere else in the city. My girlfriend and I arrived here at 6 pm. We didn't end up leaving until after 10 pm. Dining here was a great experience and I will be coming back again.
I fell in love with this red wine from Medoc. The waiter gave a few other suggestions based on the flavors in this wine. If I didn't like what he poured, he wouldn't charge. The service is very hands off, which I enjoy. The waiter even gave us a few drinks on the house, which was a nice touch. Its also nice to enjoy a glass of real champagne and not prosecco.
As far as food, we ordered cheese, foie gras, a sandwich, and creme brulee. The portions aren't huge, which isn't a bad thing. Each item on the menu is reasonably priced which is a plus.
Overall, this place is a top notch wine bar in the city. -

Whenever I'm in the West Village, this is a place I always swing by for a few glasses of wine. It's quaint and cozy, and has a lovely selection of vino. Their salad is delish too so if you're a bit hungry, it is the perfect fix.

Yup, I'm a fan! Had a great 2005 St.-Emilion and the Le Sud-Ouest as a first time experience. Small but seats opened up all evening and well worth the wait if you had too.

I was at dinner at Alta, when I told my boyfriend I wanted to try this wine bar. He was totally up for it, by the time dinner was over, I was ready to go home. We had to run one errand on 7th ave south, and when we were about to hail a cab - BAM we were right in front of Vin Sur Vingt.
Thinking this was a sign, we went in.
There was only one table left, perhaps it was a sign (but we didn't take the table, we actually sat at the bar because the tables were a bit too claustrophobic. The place was dark, with mirrors all over the walls to help make it feel a bit larger than the narrow space it really was. The bartender was very friendly, gave wonderful recommendations and was quick even though there was a full house, on this rainy Friday night. There were only two people working there - the bartender and the cook whom you could watch cook everything, since there is no real kitchen. It was a cute, cozy place and if I'm in the neighborhood I'd stop by again. I'd bring a date here, but just know it's incredibly intimate, so everyone can hear everything you're saying :)
2 glasses of moderately priced wine + tip came to about $36.00.Listed in: Date Night Drink Picks

Perfect for a date, a celebratory toast of champagne or a classy yet unpretentious spot to catch up with a friend over a bottle of wine from a well curated list.

You ever walk into a place and think 'i'm home'? That's what happened to us last night, after a fantastic tapas meal we decided to continue to wine tromp and we found a little slice of heaven. Excellent selection, great crowd and a killer vibe. I recommend the wine, it's to die for :-)

One of the best wine bars I've been to in a really long time!! It's located in the West Village and it was the perfect stop on Valentine's Day prior to our dinner at the Highlands (Scottish Gastropub). They have a very large selection of wines which will do nothing but impress you. It's a tiny little place with VERY tight seating though exudes a fair amount of charm. It's very romantic, date-y and will definitely impress a girl if you take here there for a French glass of vino. I definitely recommend it and I'll be back again.

beautifully lit ambiance, very romantic and intimate, very good selection of french wines. the menu is a bit short on tastings and the wine tasting cheese combo left a lot to be desired. Waiter could be friendlier as well.. but over all a good experience. I would recommmend this place and ordering by the bottle as well.

Vin Sur Vingt exemplifies everything about what a Parisan wine-bar should be.
I rolled in here around 9pm on a Friday night and was amazed (they don't take last-minute reservations) when there were two bar seats open right in the front - Emily K. and myself made a mad dash and were successful in aquiring these rare entities.
Following a couple minutes glancing over their comprehensive(and fairly priced) wine menu we quickly ordered a bottle of the fantastic sweet Sauvignon Blanc. Win.
After going over their menu (and Emily telling me "no escargot") we decided to sample their exotic cheese selections. The 5 for $20 sounded about right and provided enough stomach coating for not only the bottle of wine but for the shenanigans that ensued the rest of that Friday.
Actually I found this place on Yelp when I typed in "Date" and it exceeded expectations. It's now a recommendation of mine for anyone looking for a Parisian date-spot.
Kudos to you Vin Sur Vingt. -
Review from Lauren K.
I'm giving this place 4 not 5 because of the price.
I'm no sommelier so perhaps I'm just being cheap, but the place did not have a wide range of price. That being said, all the wines we tasted (on the 5 wine flight) were absolutely delightful.
Being here felt a lot like being in a Parisian cafe. I split the Croque Monsieur with a friend and the cheese, bread, and ham were all perfect.
The ambiance is great-- really intimate and cozy, TINY inside.
Don't go here if you're on a strict wine budget, but definitely come from one glass of wine and delicious cheeses. -
Review from Velina L.
Love the atmosphere of this little wine bar! Small tables or bar seating makes it an intimate place to share some wine, cheese, and charcuterie. The cheese list isn't very extensive but they have some good choices (Comte, Camembert, Petit Basque, Roquefort, Mimolette, goat cheese) and their homemade pate de campagne was pretty good (although not the best I've had - that honor goes to a wonderful Parisian place in the 5th arrondissement). The wine list isn't bad, dominated by French wines, with a decent number of choices for wine by the glass. My friend and I each had a glass of wine and shared a plate of 3 cheeses and the pate de campagne; check came out to $28/person.
They also offer wine flights (sommelier's choice) or a wine and cheese pairing, for those who are interested.
Service was phenomenal! The bartender let us try a few different wines so we could find one that best met our taste. Friendly and helpful, just the way it should be in a wine bar. -
Review from Talia R.
Pretty special, they are really not doing much wrong.
I like to hide in here at the bar, no one ever bothers me & tasty french wines around $12/glass which I cannot pronounce are continuously poured by friendly people.
It's always the right temperature here, warm without being that take-off-all-layers-too-hot in the freezing winter and crisp but not air-conditioner-freeze-out in the summer.
The food is not memorable & some of the cheese could be fresher, but these are minor quibbles. -
Review from Kathy H.
Cute, cozy and romantic and reminds me of Paris. We were just here for a glass of wine before dinner. Waited on by a beautiful waitress who was civil but definitely more attentive and friendly to my cute guy friend sitting across from me. Ah well. Maybe she was unhappy that it wasn't her. She recommended a great wine to my friend and a pretty good one to me as well, except his was $12 and mine was $20. It was good but not that good. Little did she know he was picking up the tab!
In any case, good wines and good atmosphere. Maybe next time I go with a girl friend instead. -

Vin Sur Vingt is a tiny, tiny wine bar tucked in a corner of the West Village. It was spring time when I was there, and it was framed by the perfect set of blossoming trees. Just beautiful. Anyway, you head in and you have seats by the bar and a few tables for dining. The lights are appropriately dim, so it's great for first dates when maybe you don't want to see *everything*. There is a large selection of wine and some finger food too. Feel free to ask the server for recommendations; he'll be more than glad to offer you an affordable choice.

Review from Miriam L.
Vin Sur Vingt is cozy, intimate and wonderful, but not in a cloying "you're on a date" kind of way. The short bar and little tables along the right-hand wall just invite patrons to linger, enjoy wine, and ponder small plates of charcuterie, smoked salmon or pate.
And the wine list. Oh, the wine list.
There were wines with which I was unfamiliar, wines well out of my price range and wines that I tried, loved and tried again. The sheer range of vino on the menu is outstanding and this is precisely the kind of place in which one can get lost for an afternoon, sampling wine, snacking on little plates.
Vin Sur Vingt, for me, presented another reason why I absolutely adore New York. (As if I was in any danger of forgetting...) -

Review from Mr. Voracity I.
Brooklyn, NY
There are a ton of interesting New York wine bars to go to all around Greenwich Village, with cool interiors (Anfora) or nice vibes (Aria), but only one that has really wowed me with its depth of wine selection: Terroir. Gottino has a pretty nice Italian selection, but I'm not all that in to Italian wine.
But what Mr. Voracity really, really wants for Christmas is a wine bar that has a real-deal French wine selection, a bar that has more than a few French wines, and especially one that understands ones that should be essential, like white burgundy.
My prayers have been answered (for the most part) with Vin Sur Vingt on W. 11th in the West Village.
Okay, the name does not roll off the tongue, especially my non-Francophonic tongue, and the interior is nice enough but nothing to blow your wig back. Yet the folks who made this place understand what matters: THE LIST. (Insert "ewwww" here.)
For both red and white wine, they have a nice selection of wines from various regions of France, so that someone with a little wine-sense will feel sated but the newbie won't be overwhelmed. It's not as eclectic and adventurous as Terroir, but that's okay, because this place is about focusing on one region and giving a representative sample.
The place is small and fairly intimate. Good for dates. The service was friendly and generous. No attempt to rush you into picking one.
The food was a little meh, honestly, but that will just encourage you to man up and concentrate on what really matter's: the delicious fermented grape juice.

This cute little French wine bar is perfectly intimate. The dim lighting and quiet music add to the romantic atmosphere. The wine list was almost too much to sift through! The bartender helped me chose three delicious wines for a flight. I wish we could have stayed longer, ordered some cheese or one of those chocolate desserts they were baking right in front of me... But this was a one glass kind of place for my budget.

Nicely done. THIS is how a wine bar is supposed to be.
I love the vin, but my knowledge of fine wines is closer to pathetic than it is to impressive. Thankfully, the barstaff at this classy joint was able to interpret my fumbling descriptions and match me with an excellent wine. He was more than happy to pour tastes as well, in order to narrow down what I was looking for.
I didn't sample the food, which smelled delicious, but I will absolutely be back for more good vin.Listed in: So You Think You Can Date?, Vino

Review from Vivian H.
My French is appalling. And "Vin Sur Vingt" means something like wine by 20 or something. Somebody help me with my atrocious French please...
This place does offer many wines by the glass, and I believe the number is actually 50. After looking around on yelp for a nice quaint spot, this place seemed like a good choice.
I hadn't seen my friend in a long while but I was so happy that we were able to meet up and this place helped to facilitate the conversation. Not that we needed any help. Our conversations usually end up being pretty heavy and every so often, one of us can be seen with wet eyes.
We let the bartender pick out a bottle of wine for us. The only requirements were that the wine needed to be red, dry and light. The bartender offered up a beautiful Bordeaux which was only $40. We took one sip and oth agreed this was a wine that was up our alley. We aren't wine snobs. We just enjoy a good dry wine with a healthy dose of reservatrol.
They offer up a few light, classic French dishes, including charcuterie, cheese plates, salads, tartines, and quiche. I opted for a tartin de salmon. Two juicy smoked slabs of salmon with dill sprinkled on top and creme fraiche on baguette. Perfecto! It went very well with the wine. My friend had the veggie quiche and didn't complain about it.
We sat at a corner table and enjoyed the wine and shared our stories of trials and tribulations. The candles were a nice touch and surprisingly, this place was not noisy at all. We could have stayed the whole night and had another bottle, but we found some other nefarious activities to keep us occupied for the night! -

I happen to love this establishment. Vin Sur Vingt has a terrific wine selection, great menu, wonderful ambience, and a tremendous level of service and warmth among the staff. Carlos and Jonathan, whom I usually engage with on Saturday nights are incredibly knowledgeable, highly professional, and very welcoming to everyone that walks through the door. Unpretentious, this beautiful bar is where one goes who wishes for the intimacy of their own home-that is, if their home were stocked with the best french wine, small plates, music and service.

"A Dionysus-ian Den"
Vin Sur Vingt, the latest wine bar to spread it's grape leafed wings in the West Village, is home to some pretty tasty vintages, some very friendly staff, and some really good food.
The atmosphere of this small, narrowish bar is pure France. From the accents you'll hear on both sides of the bar, to the music playing softly over the speaker system, to the varieties of reds, whites, and sparkling, to the salads, sandwiches, and quiches. It's the perfect place to be if you're longing to re-visit Paris, but are currently unable to afford the plane ticket or the time off. (Damn those of you with Summer Fridays... damn you to Beziers.)
The wine list manages to offer up multiple wines from many producers throughout the main wine growing regions of France while not being overwhelming. I, for one, am never impressed when I sit down at a restaurant with a 50 page wine list. I don't want to have to spend an hour deciding between this and that. What is this? A Democracy? I thought we were in France? But I digress...
The list is well-rounded without being overwhelming. As Sebastian, the owner, joked when we sat down, Vin Sur Vingt is "99% French. We also offer Coke and Diet Coke." The cheapest glass I believe is $10, but they go all the way up to $17 or so for a very nice glass of champagne. (I hope.)
The small tables will make you knock knees with whomever you're sitting across from, but that's not always such a bad thing.
I would highly recommend the Sud-Ouest sandwich ($13). The combination of fresh bread, duck, honey, and cheese is delicious. It also comes with a side salad, but the garlic dressing - although tasty - may not be the best choice if you plan on knocking knees (or boots) with your companion later. (They ask you to please refrain from doing so in the actual bar.)
Dino, our Maltan server, was knowledgeable and gave us multiple tastings throughout the night, which ended with a complimentary glass of champagne. Bacchus would be proud.Listed in: Britton's Bar Bible

Sophisticated - is the word I'd use to best describe.
If you want Dom sprayed over your torso to some Rihanna playback amidst a fist-pumping ring of fire, stay away. Please.
If you want to be transported to a cozy, refined wine bar tucked away in the convoluted streets of Paris - this is it. The only thing missing is the ghost of Edith Piaf.
When you order a wine, they are going to give you a serious glass to oxidize it with. You can swirl to your heart's content and make some beautiful legs inside the hollowed crystal bauble.
As you stare into your date's eyes, Al Green softly croons "I'm so tired of being alone, I'm so tired.." (where else do you hear Al Green in the city!!?!?). Overhead, THE MOST WONDROUS FAN quietly hums in rotation. I tried to take a picture, but the lighting didn't give justice to it's engineering ingenuity. I've never seen anything like it and probably never will. It looked like something from the future stylized in the past. Gorgeous. And if you look carefully, you'll see the intricately engraved tiles layering the ceiling.
The ambience weaves a spell. I would basically come here to fall in love if on a date; or get schooled on some authentic French vintages otherwise.
Note: There is a limited snacking menu, so be sure not to come hungry. Though if you are a fan of toasted cheese sandwiches, this may be paradise for you. -

Cross the tiny threshold and enter Paris! Our group of 4 went for Sunday brunch and what a treat! Several variations of quiche and croque monsieur, but also gauffres. Incredibly light and slightly sweet waffles, but without gooey toppings. Instead the waffles formed the base for delectable versions of eggs Benedict. Bacon or ham, melted, tangy Swiss or fresh goat cheese, AND Hollandaise. Happily a large helping of green salad to help balance the richness. And bottomless cups of coffee, along with lovely mimosas and bellinis.
Already a favorite evening spot, so go now before the armies of brunchies discover it! -
