This afternoon I wanted something with a little more of a home-baked feel than Starbucks and after driving up Kingsway I used Yelp! to find this little gem a stone's throw from my apartment.

As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the nice man behind the counter. He let me peruse the bakery case and then kindly heated and grilled the scone I chose. He and the other woman there made conversation with me like owners genuinely interested in their customers. I'm definitely thinking of ditching starbucks for this place in the morning. They have wraps, an assortment of coffees, freshly baked cookies, scones, smoothies, soups, breakfast sandwiches, etc.

There I was, riding my bike along the Crosstown Greenway on a hot day, heading east. As I approached 12th Street, and saw that big hill looming up before me, I couldn't face it without something in my stomach. So I rode across the street, and found this cafe, just looking for a little snack and a cool glass of anything at all.

The owner was friendly, and mentioned that he'd baked some blueberry scones earlier. I normally don't care for scones, but they did look really good. He heated up the scone and gave me butter - without my having to ask. (Stinginess with butter being a pet peeve of mine about some cafes.) The scones were perfect, practically the best I've ever eaten! As I sat on the little patio (a couple of tables in the alleyway, really, but done up nice), I forgot one more prejudice against certain baked goods.

The 12th Street neighbourhood isn't about to become a tourist destination anytime soon, but if you like your scones and tea, the Village Coffee Lounge might be a pilgrimage for you.

This place is so itty bitty but so full of knick knacks it's so great!

There is very limited seating, but it makes conversations with complete strangers more fun.  Their au lait was made to my liking with no hesitation.  There is not much of a selection of baked goods, but could tell that it has not been sitting to stale so it was a great little breakfast with my beverage.

I had a chance to chat with the owner, John.  He was a lively man who really seemed to enjoy is little spot.  He genuinely seemed interested in his new customers, and knew his regulars by name.  Always a great sign of a great business.

The decor is fantastic!  Everything is so out of place that it all fits in perfectly.  Nothing matches, you have old items mixed with new items.

Will be returning here again the next time I'm back on this side of town.

A cute little place- very unpretentious.  The owner is typically working behind the counter and will recommend pairings of foods and drinks.  I had a chai tea latte that he paired with a cookie (kind of snickerdoodle?).  Both were quite good.

It's easy to relax and get lost in your thoughts sitting at the one of the outdoor tables.  I'm not often in this part of town, but next time I am- I will stop here.
