I have a real soft spot for this place. It's one of the only spots in town that replicates the feel of an old English pub well. Trust me, there are a lot of imitators, but Victory Arms generally hits the mark.

In the summer time you can sit on the patio that overlooks the Public Gardens, which is a big feature for a lot of people, though I'm personally indifferent to this. What I really like about this place is the food.

I have a soft spot for Bangers and Mash. For some reason very few bars make this dish around here and even fewer make it well. Victory Arms definitely does it the best in the city. So be sure to check it out if you're stopping in.

The staff have always been very helpful when I've been there, accommodating larger parties with little trouble and keeping an eye on our table without pestering us.

A great spot with great food. The Victory Arms Pub is definitely worth checking out.

While the food is good and prices are what you'd expect for being attached to a hotel, the service is sometimes crap. Long waits for a server to get to you for the initial drinks and then it can take forever to track them down again to pay and leave.

Before we even get started here, you've all seen the Harold and Kumar movies, right? Well the night I visited the Victory Arms Pub was a lot like that although change White Castle to anywhere that sells a real mac 'n cheese after 10pm and lose the illegal narcotics. So depending on where you're coming from, you're either a lot more or a lot less excited about what I have to say now.

Halifax isn't know for the late-night eats. Once most restaurants take their last tables around ten, it's easy to resign yourself to the general 24-hour crap that we're willing to shovel into our mouths while stumbling Bambi-legged down the street after a night worthy of a Pitbull verse. (Gratuitous trash-rap reference...sorry.) But when a craving for that breadcrumb-topped ooey-gooey hits, you just gotta have it.

We drove, we walked, we called, and we knocked until squeaking in under the wire at the Victory Arms Pub to find a no-frills, cheesy baked mac on the bar menu. We put our order in before we even sat down and then had delicious (and strong) celebratory cocktails. What? Finding mac 'n cheese is always worthy of a celebration, amiright?

It looked small when it came to the table - you know in the way that you build something up in your mind until it becomes a holy grail crusade - especially since we were splitting it but it was filling and definitely didn't leave us needing more. It came piping hot and topped with a handful of finely chopped tomatoes for some added colour. Lesson learned though...if you can only choose one thing between colour and breadcrumbs, always ALWAYS choose breadcrumbs. Without them, the dish just didn't live up to expectations especially when the cheeses and creams weren't really flavourful enough to hold their own. To be fair though, it wouldn't surprise me if I got a little eager and burnt my taste buds on the first bite...I'll have to go back for round two to be sure. THAT's how dedicated I am to you folks, I'll take any mac 'n cheese bullet so that you don't have to.

At $12.95, it was a late-night snack for two that we could feel good about in the end (perhaps not great value for one person) and while it won't rank on the top transcendent mac 'n cheese experiences for me, I appreciated that they had it at all and that they didn't roll their eyes when we arrived within 30 minutes of their closing time.

We tried the crab dip to start which hit the spot. The baked haddock with lobster and a cream sauce was cooked properly and the flavors went well together. The caramelized onions on the red potatoes were an unexpected plus to the dish. At $19.95, I thought the dish was reasonably priced. My mom tried the haddock with the creole type sauce which was too overseasoned in my opinion but she loved it. The service was pretty attentive as well. It's a relaxing place for dinner with the dark atmosphere and the retro music.

    Mission Accomplished.

I just needed a cute headline for my review and given the fact that they are called Victory Arms...okay, that one didn't work so I'll move on. The Victory Arms pub is a great restaurant. I like their ambiance although it is a bit dark. But what I like most is the fact that their prices aren't that much different from a regular restaurant. One of the biggest sins in the world is when a restaurant charges more than they should simply because they are in a Hotel. I know they can get away with it at times, but it still should be illegal.

I've had their club house sandwich which is one of the few things I would say is a few dollars more than I would expect. They do give you good quality food. But for the size and amount of food, its just not worth eleven dollars.

The staff are very good and pleasant. Not quite outstanding but pretty good at their job. If I rated them by themselves I would give them three and a half stars.

The Victory Arms Pub is located in the beautiful Lord Nelson Hotel in downtown Halifax. There have been more than one occasion where myself and some friends were debating where to go and eat on a Friday night but dreaded trying to find a seat, knowing all the restaurants would be busy. But thanks to the Victor Pub, we almost always found a seat simply because, I believe, no one would have thought of a hotel restaurant as an option. All in all its a great restaurant. The pricing isn't as bad as a regular hotel restaurant but could still be a bit better. The staff are great but could be greater. And the food is good...nope...its good. I'm okay if it doesn't improve.

I like this pub for a few reasons. It's situated just inside the lobby of the Lord Nelson Hotel, so you get to have that "I'm in another town" feeling when you walk through the lobby. The restaurant is full of booths that offer lots of privacy, so you can have a quiet conversation and not necessarily share it with the rest of the clientele. And there is an outdoor balcony in summer that offers a nice view of the public gardens and the busy comings-and-goings of the hotel's guests.

Unfortunately, the food, which was once really good - skilfully and artfully prepared - was worse than mediocre the last time I ate here (which was a few months ago). The burger was a pre-made frozen patty that tasted of nothing much. The chicken Caesar salad was just okay. But I've just had a quick check of the menu, and it appears that it's been re-vamped, so perhaps there's a new chef. I'll have to check it out and report back!

Beer is always nice and cold and the service is consistently friendly.
