I hail from just outside of Toronto, a city that has about a zillion and one record shops. Since I moved here, I have really only gone to two record shops (one closed down). Vertigo is the other one, still open and found on Rideau Street in the heart of Ottawa's downtown core.

I don't usually visit this shop unless I am super desperate (sometimes you just HAVE to listen to Conor Oberst on vinyl!) or I am buying concert tickets. Sometimes, more independent concert venues use Vertigo Records as a ticket selling venue.

The shop is pretty small, and I have had both good and bad interactions with the staff. We bought our turntable there and the individual that helped us out was really knowledgable and personable, but when we went back to get some speakers, it was the exact opposite.

Prices are decent, as far as vinyl goes. The variety is not great, but they do carry a wide variety of genres of music.

I pop in if I have time to kill downtown, but usually end up browsing the fliers for concerts on the bulliten-board and leave empty handed.

Vertigo Records is, as the name suggests, a record store. Yes, it also offers DVDs and CDs, but if you are old school and prefer the scratchy authenticity of vinyl, Vertigo Records is for you. The shop is long and heads back deep from the street and the entire left wall is dedicated to bins and bins of 33 1/3 records. And, it isn't just oldies. I saw some new records there too (White Stripes) so it looks like the reports of the death of vinyl were a little exaggerated. I don't own a turntable, so I grazed the CD and DVD racks. The DVDs were around $10 each, but the selection was thin. I guess people who like their DVDs keep them and don't trade them in. As for the CDs, they were organized by music genre and then again alphabetically. As per the DVDs, the CD collection broadly covered a lot of bands, but not very deeply. For instance, I found only one Cocteau Twins disc and it was an EP. Discs were selling anywhere from $5 to $12, depending on the rarity of the disc and the newness. The staff is practically invisible, so you are free to wander and browse without being hassled.
