I came in on a Friday and to my surprise, their 'daily deal' was to choose any of the deals from Monday-Thursday (hurray!). I came in knowing the quality of their burgers as I've had Vera's cater to our company parties so I've had their delicious patties before. I ordered a "canuck burger", added mushrooms and got Sweet Potato Fries with it. Delicious!!! I thought maybe the patty was a little burnt but over all, it was delicious! I was so full though I couldn't finish the fries (bummer). Prepare yourself for a flavourful burger - it will get messy with juices running down your hands!

The staff was also very nice, friendly and helpful!

Well everyone had better find another Vera's location, they used to be terrific here, Steve the manager was kool and made great burgers but i went in there today for my usualy lunch and to my surprise there's a new team at Vera's. Steve is gone to North Vancouver and in his place the new owner put a manager that knows nothing about the burger business. He must be the new franchise owners brotherinlaw. He does not understand english very weel at all, I walked up to the counter and ordered my usual 2 Canucks burgers, one with Blue Cheese, no mayo on either burger  and one is a combo. 23 minutes later after the kid froze, tried to charge me for extra cheese and then started over again 23 times the manager came over finally and i told him in plain english exactly what i wanted, 2 Canucks burgers, one with blu cheese, no mayo and one combo and he kept telling me let m,e read your order back to you again and again. I toild him the girls is already making my burgers, it's just two Canuck Burgers, one combo, no mayo and one with Blue Cheese and he kept replying "Let me read this back to you. I told him there is no charge for extra cheese, i don't want extra chesses, just 2 Canucks burgers, one Blu Cheese, no mayo and ones a combo and he could not register my order? I told hhim i have eaten here for years and always order the same simple thing but no, he went on and on like the chef at Shitty Wok on South Park, I told him the meter cost me $3.00, i have been standing here for 23 minutes, my food  is almost ready and how come you can't just ring in 2 Canucks Burgers, one a combo and let me eat? He said so solly, let me read this back to you again.

At this point i toild him you know there are other Vera's locations and that i could drive to two of them and eat in less time than it was taking him to ring up 2 Canucks burgers, one combo no mayo. He statred to yell at me and my partner, now my partner is a 56 year old lawyer and i'm not a dummy either and were getting tired of  this so we left, drove over to Kits on Cornwall and the guy there rang me up in 20 seconds and i was eating a delicious burger in less than 5 minutes plus no parking meters.

I don't think they train these people very well, the girl on the grill was a holdover and fine but i have called Vera's to complain before and there not very concerned or interested in their customers, just selling those franchises to anyone and everyone and cashing the checks. This owner never sets foot in his restaurant even though he probably spent a small fortune on the franchise.

Thank god Kits was the first location and has good staff working there because one of the best Vera's is now on of the worst. Save yourself the aggravation and drive to Kits.

While we were in Vancouver, we kept seeing the tagline, "You Can't Beat Vera's Meat."

Each time I saw that line, I thought the literary device of double entendre truly is not used enough in everyday life especially with how much enjoyment I get out of it.

Now onto flavor, Vera's burgers are pretty good -- the meat is cooked to your order.  One of their signature burgers, the Cantor, contains beef salami and fried onions.  The beef salami takes the place of bacon in your usual burger -- salty and crispy.

The sides are large enough if you get one to share between two people.  We got one side each (at $5 / side), so it became ridiculous how much it ended up costing and how much food we had left over.

Update - Vera's has slipped further downhill.

Food is about the same.  Burgers seem even dryer.  It seems to depend a lot on who's cooking that day, it's very inconsistent.

Value - ouch.  It used to be under $11 all in for one of their daily specials - overpriced but within reason if you like burgers.  Now it's close to $15, including an extra 1.50 charge for onion rings that didn't used to be there. (Did the price of onions really climb?)

Remember, this place is not the cleanest, doesn't have great decor, is even quite smoky unless the full windows are open.  It's a slightly better than fast food atmosphere/service.  $15 at this type of place is unacceptable.

Anyways, would give it 2.5 stars if I could, I used to go there at least twice a month but will likely never be back (unless the onion rings tempt me)

After a day of running all around Vancouver before a meeting, I was really craving a burger.  A really good burger.  A spectacular and indulgent burger.

Yelp saves me in these situations, so I did a search and headed over to Vera's.  Parking was really easy to find on the street.  (Side note: I love parking in Vancouver because it is so easy to do with credit cards.  The flashing green traffic lights I still don't understand...)  I got a little nervous about the outside because the awning is ostentatious and still doesn't really stand out compared to what is next to it, but then I went inside.

With hockey playing on four screens, this feels like a very Canadian way of eating a burger, but somehow it doesn't feel too sports-bar-like.  Clean and open, it is easy to read the menus and order.  The cashier was very friendly and told me she would bring the food to me.

I ordered sweet potato fries and they were perfect; both crispy and hot. This is a rarity for sweet potato fries, which I can never figure out.  If they have good breading, they aren't hot; if they are hot, they don't taste good.  Somehow, Vera's pulled it off.

The burger was also great. I ordered the works and pulled a few things off because it was so big.  A very sweet, gruff-voiced attendant (possibly the owner) checked on me to see if they needed to fix the order, although it was perfect.  He checked on me at the end, too.  The entire time I was eating, he was constantly cleaning and taking care of tables.  Really incredible service and attention.

    I am over-the-top impressed.

I like their fries because they are not very greasy.  The veggie burger is consistently good.

I've eaten at Vera's a number of times over the last couple of years, but I have noticed a decline in the quality and quantity of food.  This use to be the only place I go for burgers in town, but I think I will have to find another burger joint.

The last burger I ate was burned so bad, that when I lifted to see what the patty looked like, it was completely black.  Unfortunately we had done take out and I wasn't going to take the time to take them back.  Our friends were no different.  We also ordered some onion rings that cost 5.99 and there were 7 onion rings in the bag, small ones.  The fries were also no more than 1-2 cm long at the most, I'm beginning to wonder whether they take one fry and chop it into 4 pieces to save money.  It's quite sad that they call those fries, not even close.

My suggestion, find another place, or even try another Vera's location.  Quality is just not there, so make sure you check your order before you leave this location, if taking out.

I used to call Veras, Vera's Murder Shack. That's the vegetarian in me. Lo and behold they actually have their own handmade veggie burger. Made with soy protein, i went with the tuesday special of chedder cheese and deep fried jalepeno poppers. It was a good burger. I still managed to feel disgusting after gorging myself on the french fries.
If your under weight, or need a heavy meal, this is your place!
I have to say the staff here are uber friendly.. a nice change from most burger joints.

Very good burger- enjoy the sauce very much.  Tried the poutine, which I have never had before.  Very interesting.  A bit too much gravy for my taste, but the cheese curds were yummy with fries.  The only criticism is that they have too many competing signs.  I did not see "the works" sign until after I had ordered.  Next time I will try the works toppings for sure.

Probably my fav of the Vera's family...   sure their ventilation system isn't enough to keep the smoke out of the dining area... but you know... I kind of like that.   I walk out of the place smelling like I've been grilling burgers for a few hours, and I'm good with that.  :)

The BBQ burger is my usual go to... and split a plate of poutine with the fiance...   it leaves me over full... .over happy....  and just so damned happy to be alive.

Some of you go to Fatburger... and rave about it...  and I just shake my head wondering why you're willing to pay 3X as much as Wendy's for the same quality (nothing against Wendy's for a fast food burger....  I like the fresh toppings on there)...  just give it a try at Vera's instead....  I think you'll be happy.

    MMM Greasy Burgers!

You can choose from any topping, sauce, and cheese you want, the sky's the limit, even the patties. Also with a huge menu and different kinds of burgers to choose from you'll be there for a while, well at least i was.
I finally ordered a double patty burger with chedder cheese, fried onions, bacon, and a fried egg on top. not healthy you say? no worries there's lettuce and pickle on it!   (i'm fat remember?) ANYHOO!.. My burger was messy as F#$K but i had a good time eating it! i felt like i was in a episode of "Man Vs Food".

Overall great taste and concept! Vera, your A-OK in my book. BUT i still wouldn't say that your the "best burger in town".... just sayin!... ;)  still love you tho!

This is supposed to be Vancouvers best burger. It certainly has a way to go to even get there.

The burgers are huge and the location is very convenient for us. The quality, however, has much to be wished for. I am not a fan of food so large that the taste has to be sacrificed. I'm a big fan of a smaller burger with a great taste. I do, however, really like the large selection of toppings that you can choose from. Yum.

If you want to stuff yourself and have a couple of beers, this is your place. I'm sure, though, that we will be back.

Jamie W. and I were in search of a great burger in Vancouver and found ourselves in - SURPRISE! - the gay neighborhood of Davie Village in the West End. Yep, here is Vancouver's answer to SF's Castro, LA's WeHo and Chicago's Boystown. Except for the pink garbage cans, it's not all that ostentatious in its gayness, and Vera's really doesn't feel like the late, lamented Hot n' Hunky in the Castro. But a good burger can indeed be found here.

Emphasis on good since it isn't that great either. Choice seems to be the prerogative here, as there are all kinds of burgers to be had here. Veggie. Turkey. BBQ Chicken. Oh yes, and beef. Jamie ordered the daily special, the C$9.99 Canuck Burger, which is a bacon cheeseburger that comes with onion rings and a regular drink (see photo). I had the C$6.99 Lamb Burger that required me to combo it up with a side of fries and a regular drink for an extra C$3.99 (see photo). Yeah, required.

It was all well and good but honestly, nothing that exceptional. I like the texture and flavor of a hand-formed patty, but the patties here unfortunately taste like they've been pre-packaged and refrigerated. Sigh. And what a is gayborhood without a great burger place. Where else do mutually consenting adults with large biceps go between rounds of fruity cocktails at the local fern bar? But then again, Vera's is part of a local chain, so maybe the burger gaydar is only at half-mast.

FOOD - 3 stars...good burgers but simply not great
AMBIANCE - 3 stars...a tavern with lots of Canadian paraphernalia and a rainbow flag
    SERVICE - 2.5 stars...can't remember
    TOTAL - 3 stars...Vancouver's gayburger joint

Their story:  "You can't beat Vera's meat."

My version:  "Let Vera beat her own thin shrivilled meat, and don't make me watch!"

Now that we've got the silly marketing out of the way, let's turn to the burgers.  I've tried them a few times, and have never been satisfied.  I find the patties a bit too thin (dimension and fat content of the meat) and a bit too fat (somehow even though I find the meat dry on the inside the outside is always too greasy for me).

If you like nude meats, you should come here. And I'm not being gross, either--they advertise serving their burgers without zero toppings whatsoever. You have to ask for everything--ketchup, mayo, lettuce, on up to some crazier things like jalapenos, guacamole, or a fried egg.

Naturally, The Boy was in heaven because he just wants ketchup, nothing else, and no restaurant can ever seem to manage that. I was able to add "The Usual Suspects", as they call them, and they got that right, too.

It was kind of a long wait, since it was pretty busy and they have the tiniest little kitchen known to man. The fact that it was hundreds of degrees in there didn't make it seem to take any less time. Especially because almost all of their fountain sodas were empty and we had to wait for the refills to get installed. But there were lots of entertaining photos on the wall to scrutinize--people who had ordered their burgers with like a dozen patties.

I bet you're wondering if it was worth the wait. The short answer is: Yes. The long answer is: Oh-my-stars-that-was-the-best-burger-I've-ever-put -in-my-mouth.

Next time I go to Vancouver, I'm not eating for a week in advance so that I can have one of those monster burgers. Look for my picture on the wall.

4 stars for Vera's Organic burger.
Yep Yelpers, if you're going to pay close to 10 bucks for a burger, why not pay a few dollars more for Organic? Trust me, there is a noticable difference in taste.
The last time a friend and I went to the shack. Two beers and two organic burgers cost just under $35. Now, yes that is a lot of money, but... how often do you eat burgers anyways?
But, I think Vera's Meat can be beat.  I am on the lookout!

"You can't beat Vera's meat".  Now that's a catchphrase I can get behind, for various reasons...One being that it just might be true.

We were so psyched to eat here, we walked all the way in the rain and didn't even care.  My friend C, and I were so excited, like little kids, waiting in line discussing what we were going to order.  My other friend L, the "dad" of the group, kept taking steps back to read the menu and kept brushing against me with his wet coat.  "Dude, L keeps getting me all wet!" , I said to C....wait for it....OMG, burst out laughing.  Can't stop laughing even to order.  Patient Vera's staff, thank god.

Yummy, yummy burgers.  I go for the Pilgrim (turkey burger) and you get to add whatever you want on it.  My kind of place for sure.  The toppings, or "flavour shots" as they call them, include tons of great items like various kinds of cheese, salsa, fried onions, roasted garlic, etc.  Mmmmm...

As far as burgers go - IMO Vancouver is a tough place to be satisfied -yes there is the White Spot Legendary and the odd high-end burger, but with no In-N-Out or other institutions I have always saved my burger cravings for trips south of the 49th parallel.

However, in those odd times when its not feasible to head south Vera's fills the void, and in a decent workmanlike fashion.

The choice of toppings are extensive and well executed.  Take a minute to scour your choices and have a good idea of what you want before ordering.

The beef is somewhat overcooked and ordinary.  The toppings lift the game for Vera's to somehow arrive at an above-average burger.  The fries are decent (but cost extra).  The service or wait time varies extensively with how busy the place is.

Wednesday nights are a steal - with 2 sleeves of beer and a burger for around 10 bucks --- add to that the $300 I save on airfare and its game on for Vera's.

Denise calls the burgers "fat, juicy, and succulent."

Really, that sums it up PERFECTLY.

They've got the best fries on Earth, delicious poutine, and savory hot dogs as well. Their burgers are what takes the cake. One of the few places I've been to in Vancouver that serves their burgers slightly pink inside too -- my favorite way!

I am typically a light eater but I am almost always able to clean my basket here.

A real added plus is the staff - one girl who works here whom I solely recognize by her poofy bun and her wide Lululemon headband, is one of the friendliest and sweetest people in all of Davie St restaurant-dom. She does her damndest to remember customers by first name, appearance, and she will remember your preferred orders almost immediately.
Case in point; we stopped coming here for about two months once, and when we came back she greeted me with, "Hey! Molly, right? Two poutines?"
I just thought it was great. I really love this place. Negative one star for the price, though. :P

I went there because of a groupon and really enjoyed the food for the price that I paid.  I had a cheeseburger and the hubby had a burger with the works.  We shared a drink and the onion rings and if we hadn't had the groupon, it would've been almost $40.  That just seems on the high side to me.  I'm not saying it wasn't delicious because it was yet was it that delicious that I'd do it again without a groupon...I'm not so sure.

Vera's is really good, but really spendy.  It's like the West Coast version of Lick's, but everything's spendier by a loonie or so.

Burgers are big, toppings are fairly plentiful, they don't bitch about giving you mayo for your fries (ahem, fatburger...i'm talkin about you) and they make stellar sides. The jalapeno bottle caps are a good add-on for your burger, and they do use some sort of deeply amazing cheese. Granville Island on tap...so i'd probably look the other way on the price and hand out 5 stars, but...

The poutine, sorry guys, sucks.  The gravy is wrong, the curds are too wet and it's kinda icky, and though Vera's fries are proper with some vinegar on them, they're awful with poutine. Sorry, but the lack of decent poutine in Vancouver has not been remedied by Vera's attempt.

With all the burger joints out there, why go to Vera's?

    The Food:
REAL meat with all the fat and goodness a growing boy needs!  All kinds of interesting burgers on the menu, and if those don't appeal to you, you can always build your own burger with a variety of toppings.

Toppings are fresh -- lettuce is crisp, tomatos are firm and everything else is as it should be.

Patties are made from real meat, prepared that day, and cooked in front of you.

The fries and rings are tasty too -- the fries are homestyle (with skin still on) and always cooked to perfection.

The Service: At this location the staff are friendly and efficient, competent and consistent -- that's what keeps me coming back.  Though you sometimes wind up waiting a while for your burger, that's the consequence of getting your burger cooked fresh for you.

The Environment:  The Shack is fairly spacious, but it does fill up pretty quickly at peak times.  There are 3 t.v.s tuned to sports stations to keep you busy if your woman is boring you. ;)  The photos of the freaks eating the 10 patty burgers are pretty entertaining too. (ok, I'm jealous.. I'm not the man those guys are!)

Bonus: Every night has a combo special for about $10.99, and they have pretty good beer specials too ;)

Advice: Be sure to ask for a well-done burger unless you like your burgers on the rarer side (their default is medium)

Vera's is one of Vancouer's staple burger joints. Starting as a small indie it has now become a pretty big chain across the city. I was first exposed to it at the Davie restaurant and it remains one of my favorites.

Compared with some of the other local burger joints Vera's is far from the best, yet, compared to most chain places it absolutely owns. The burgers are big, meaty and you can put almost anything you can imagine on them. The topping range from the mundane to the very strange and all options are on the table. The burgers are treated as a separate entity and you can really get some customization done if you're willing to spend the money to do it.

One thing I really love about Vera's though is the fries. They are the old school thin, potatoey fries you used to get in restaurants and fast food places. You order them by the basket and they're well worth it as it's a treat you can't usually find around town.

The one thing that keeps me away from constantly eating Vera's though is the price. It's tough to shell out 10+ for a full meal for me when it is really greasy food in a non-restaurant setting. That said, the taste is worth it and for an 'every once and a while' treat, you wont regret it.

Another tasty sammich, just as good as the last one at the location on Denman. More seating here, less 'shack like' feeling with several big tv screens, which is both good and  bad, depending on what you are in the mood for.

Super friendly staff. I got a beer while I was waiting for my food, and started reading. My order came up pretty fast, so they kept it warm for me behind the counter so I could take my time with my beer. Excellent customer service!!

Is it wrong to review Vera's if I ate the vegetarian burger and still semi-fell in love with this place? If I've offended burger connoisseurs (aka Marc D.) or any of my anti-franchising friends, please forgive me ahead of time.

As I walked into the place, I couldn't help but be disgusted by all the pictures of triple-layered patties (that needed to be held together by a stick no less), smooshed between buns with wide-mouthed humans hovering over them. I even gagged on my water a little when I watch my friend eat the three patty artery clog or heart attack or whatever fat congested disorder they named it. But at the same time, I can't resist but enjoy the hickish home town feel and the wall propaganda that showed Vera's commitment to the quality of her meat (although it would be nice if they told us where it comes from).

There is a reason Vera's continue to win the award for the best burger in town and keeps their customers coming back: their concept is simple and it's friggin' delicious. Maybe the fact that I went for a six-hour hike added to the nomness (nom nom nom) of my meal but after I took one bite of my burger (with "the works"), I knew I would back. Plus, I pretty much love any place that serves vinegar with freshly deep fried french fries :P

Veras, I love you and hate you. Please don't make me eat your burgers again.

P.S. Has anyone else been to their website (http://www.verasburger...) and raised their eyebrow slash slipped a giggle when you saw the intro? Branding tactics these days...I wonder if they sell that funny lookin' chef's hat made of cow skin, it would make a nice addition to my animal couture collection sponsored by Fendi.

Awesome staff, they remember what the regulars order, which is good for me because when I go to pick up an order for my husband I can never remember exactly what he gets...they have no problem remembering, so that's a definite bonus.

The burger is a lot like the ones you would make at home, big, beefy, greasy goodness.

The fries are their weak point.

Went here with my mother. The burgers were decent, a little pricey for my taste. The tables are dirty. However the people are friendly. It's really nothing special but lots of variety of toppings and sides. You get a hint of that meaty taste too often missed at other burger places... but not much and not much other flavor to make up for it. Wouldn't go out of my way to go here.

Vera's Burgers...as much as I try to eat healthy, you break my streak.  Hahaha!  What's not to love: the burgers, the rings, the fries...total comfort food.

Now I am craving Vera's and it's almost lunch time.  Damn!

This is the place to go for a big burger.  It's fresh meat and there's a lot
of it.  On the wall are pictures of people eating burgers- including triple
burgers (3 patties between a bun)- the result is a burger about 8 inches in height!  I like the jalapeno caps- little round slices of jalapenos fried up like onion rings.  They're good- you can get them as a side or right on top of your burger. I recommend getting something with cheese because the cheddar tastes wonderful.

They have daily food and beer specials.  Friday's special is called Two-Fistin' Friday (2 pints for $6).

While we were waiting in line to order, almost all the tables filled up.  So
I recommend, having one person reserve a table as soon as you come in because this is a very popular lunch spot.

Split the sliders and chili fries and was pleasantly surprised. A lot of places try to do the whole slider thing, but for some reason can't understand that smaller patties means you gotta be a little more attentive on the grill or you'll end up with little meat pucks. Vera's sliders are moist and well seasoned little suckers. The fries were good and the chili on top was surprisely pretty tastey as well. Not the canned chili I was expecting. I want to try one of their specialty burgers next time.

Yeaahhh, if I was feeling one of those "I need "A BURGER" days, I would eat here. Portion sizes are legendary and their yam fries are decent (that's all worth writing about).

The burgers are very good here. I tried the sliders and chili cheese fries and was amazed at the taste of the meat in this burger. Its a clean your own table kind of place but the food is good and if your willing to spend a few dollars more for a burger try theirs.

    One word: the Vic
double patty, double fried onions and cheese, DOUBLE bypass.
Take with onion rings and coke. Bring back home. Watch a movie. Die Happy.

If you're in the mood for a real big honkin' barely fit in your mouth style burger then this is the place to go. They have awesome specials during the week including alcohol! I always go here when I'm craving that epic burger and they have the best add-ons of any similar spot around town (fried egg, back bacon, blue cheese etc...) The staff here always seem to greet everyone as they walk in the door no matter how busy it is and I'd have to admit I love going into a place with top notch customer service. Do yourself a favour and have a burger and a pint here, maybe watch the Canucks or Whitecaps while you're at it. Thank me later

Anyplace with "shack" in the name is a must go to for me. This place is really good, from the gourmet burgers with lots of toppings to the poutine, which is my new favorite dish. Actually the only thing that could have better than having poutine tonight while sober would be to get absolutely hammered, go back and have poutine late night. Who would have thought that putting french fries, gravy and cheese together would taste so good. Those crazy Quebecois.
