Review from Adrienne R.
After a day of driving, walking, taking public transport, and sightseeing all over Vancouver, we decided to have dinner close to out hotel. We can see Vera's from our room, saw generally good reviews and decided to give it a try.
The staff was super friendly, checked on us part way through our meal, and talked to us about finding out about border crossing waits.
We ordered a kids hot dog meal. It was possibly the best hot dog ever (shy of Chicago, of course.) We also ordered a kids sliders with chili added, the Thursday special combo with sweet potato fries, and a Vera burger combo with poutine. The sweet potato fries came with a garlic mayo. The serving sizes were reasonable and the cost was reasonable. The side of fries for the Thursday special was large enough for a family of 4 to share. The chicken provolone BBQ sandwich was really good. They toast the bun, yum! The burger was better than any in Seattle we've had. However, it did not quite exceed that of the Save-On Meats burger. Also the poutine had melted cheese curds, indicating that the curds were not fresh. The poutine at La Belle Patate was better.
We chose a table sitting under the heater, which gave some awesome warmth after a cold day out in the rain. -

I came in Friday after work and was placing my order when I noticed the cook coughing on a burger he was prepping. He then blew his nose and went to work on the fryer without washing his hands. I told the cashier what I saw and turned and walked out. Gross.
I went to the Vancouver Health Department to file a complaint and discovered that a health inspection a few weeks ago found a number of "repeat violations."
I was contacted a few days later by a city Health Inspector who emailed me the details of his visit due to my complaint. Hopefully they clean up their act. -

I'm seeing commercials for burger places. Pick your own toppings kind of burger places. There's only one of these in the Portland area and it seems there are loads near the hotel, so when the GF announces that she will be spending one of our vacation mornings sleeping until she can not possible sleep any more, I determine that day I will have a burger for breakfast.
Hell yeah.
Vera, why are your hours of operation not on your bleeping website?!? Are you kidding me? Grrr.
Anyway, the burger was good. I missed about half the options because the board lay out was kinda weird but I probably would have had a basic burger anyway.
The fries were way lame, undercooked and bland. -

I wish I read the reviews before I dropped by yesterday. Soggy fries, dry burger and blah atmosphere. Won't be back.

So one time walk in and order two burgers for takeout. After waiting a half hour for our burgers, we walked to the beach to eat them. My wife's was okay, but mine was quite charred on the outside, and completely raw inside. I like a good rare steak, and I'm even okay with a slightly pink burger, but this was way too few to be served.
I told my wife to stay there and I walked to get a replacement. I was calm and polite - these things happen, I understand - but I was quite surprised that my replacement took more than a half hour to come out. I know it's a busy joint, but wouldn't you want to fix the problem by putting it at the front of the list?
Anyways, I finally got my burger and walked back to my wife. I opened my burger, and it was RAW again!
I went back and complained, and the manager said their stove must be faulty. Strange that all the other burgers came out fine...? He offered another burger, but I said no thanks. I asked for a refund, but instead he said I could get a voucher for a free burger another time! Shocked, I said no, and walked out the door, with no burger, and no refund!
I was happy to see a handful of other patrons that were about to order, follow me out the door.Comment from C. Y. of Vera's Burger Shack 2/17/2011

This location of Vera's is situated on a particularly busy stretch of Denman, and I stopped in here for dinner one night with friends. I think I got overhyped and was expecting greatness, so I was disappointed once I took a bite.
There are lots of choices, and that's good--not just in terms of toppings, but in terms of your patty as well. I chose the Natural, which is an organic beef, but I was strongly leaning toward the ground turkey or lamb. I chose cheddar, bacon and roasted garlic as my extras, along with "the usual suspects" (lettuce, tomato, ketchup, pickle, etc). I loved the pickle, which was cut longways and was parked right through the middle of my burger. However, I wasn't particularly impressed with the burger itself. It seemed kind of dry and not very flavorful, and after experiencing a hometown Smashburger as a goodbye present before my trip began, I had a particularly potent picture of what a great burger is like. It was also rather pricey at around $15 for a bottled drink and burger (no fries or onion rings, as I was snitching off of my friend's platter).
I think this was my least satisfying meal in Vancouver...but considering how it wasn't even close to being awful, that says volumes about the quality of food here! With all the culinary adventures you can have in the city, however, I'd skip Vera's and look elsewhere for your flavor cruising.Listed in: Fun in Van-city

Imagine a burger joint where you get to pick your meat..lamb, beef, turkey..and so on..then you get to put whatever you want on it...AND you get your choice of fires or onion rings..umm hello heaven..is that you calling??
Vera's is the best burger in town in my opinion and always made to my liking..no matter which location you go to the service and quality are there..
The decor is fine..what you'd imagine a burger only spot would look like...kinda like a sports bar/pub feel without the sports..lots of wood and metal..tres butch..there usually isn't a lot of room to sit and eat in as they are often small and always busy..so I usually get my order to go...
It is a bit on the pricey side and your fries or onion rings are extra..but it's totally worth it!! I highly recommend the lamb burger with onion rings..you decide on your own condiments as I think it's wrong to tell someone how to fix there burger..very personal... -

My friends and I like to come here when we go to the beach. If you like burgers this is a great place. You can customize the burger anyway you want!
The price are kind of steep. It's definitely not McD's, no cookie cutter combos here. There is not a lot of seating so I recommend take out and just sit on the beach and enjoy the beautiful Vancouver weather. -

Meh, I'm not sure why so many friends love Vera's. I mean sure it's a good burger but I feel it's overly hyped.
They offer nothing that would draw me to return, nor can I imagine myself ever craving Vera's. It's a matter of convenience. The location right by English Bay makes it a good place to fill up on protein after biking or rollerblading around the Sea Wall. -
Review from Nick S.
This place has good burgers and ambiance, but their prices are a bit expensive for what you get.
They had fresh brews on top though, so extra points awarded there!
If you're walking through Stanley Park and in the mood for a burger, you probably can't go wrong with a burger from Vera's.
Space is tight though, so you may be standing while you wait!Comment from C. Y. of Vera's Burger Shack 2/17/2011

Burgers are good, but I probably won't return - too expensive for what you get, and the staff weren't very pleasant.
The fries are nothing memorable either. I wish I saved the money and went to DQ down the street (which is not memorable either, but at least it would have been better value). -

This was my first time. After all the hyped, I must say I'll join in on it. The burger patty was really good. I also like the fried onions in it. It was opened late so that was convenient even though they ran out of patties after we ordered. Sucks for other people who came 30 minutes before they closed. The worker who helped us seemed tired and blur blur. At first he got my order mixed up. I wanted to try the Pawer Burger but they ran out of eggs. So I settled for the BBQ...which I enjoyed with the Granville Island beer...yummy!
However, I don't think a burger should be that expensive without a few fries for free. Location-wise...it's easy to find and right in the center of the action. But the workers and lack of food makes me want to go to another location. The burgers...are delicious! Give me FRIES! -

I don't eat beef and thank god for Veras! I love their turkey burger with cheddar and the works. Fries are always so good and great portions. It can be a bit of a wait at times but so worth it imo. Good service too, I never come across those in a bad mood working there.

Stopped here for lunch with my boyfriend on a Monday afternoon. There were plenty of tables open. My boyfriend got a baja burger with salsa, guacamole, cheese and held the peppers, and I got a regular beef cheeseburger. The meat was good but might have been better a little bit pinker. It was juicy and the patty was just the right size. I liked how they put on ketchup, mustard, tomato and lettuce. I think there was some relish, which I normally don't like but I didn't even notice it until the end. They had a lot of interesting milkshakes like blackberry but I went with a Granville Winter since I can't get it back in NYC. Very, very good!

husband had a baja burger and i had a philly cheesesteak sammich. both were prepared perfectly, tasted fantastic and the beer specials were a nice added bonus.
it did take a while, there was only ONE guy working for the entire place, on victoria day afternoon! whoever did the scheduling wasn't very bright, cuz the guy could definitely have used some help. but he kept his cool, moved super fast and was very friendly.
prices weren't cheap, but not stupid expensive. fresh, lots of choices, very good, so worth in my opinion.Comment from C. Y. of Vera's Burger Shack 2/17/2011

Yah, I'm a fan -- shared a BBQ burger with my friend, but BBQ is not my fave. I want to try the G something mushroom burger next time! Friday's are 2 pints for $3 Granville Island Lager. That was great :0) Yam fries look good but overpriced. Restaurant not that clean and they could use someone on the outside to clean up the tables and garbage. Overall, a great time to sit and eat a burger. The garage doors are opened at the front of the shop and it's a great atmo to sit and watch people walk by. Definitely crazy when the fireworks are out!

Vera's has good burgers and poutine. Been there twice, got different burgers, and liked both. I am used to Burgers from fabulous places in San Francisco and Vera's is definitely above average in comparison. However, the place does not make the cleanest impression (e.g., both times our tables and the floor was sticky). Nevertheless, I would go again.
