Review from Seb A.
I've heard a lot of bad press about this place. For example, some of my friends have told me that this place sells stolen bike parts. First off, where is the evidence for this? No one has ever been able to tell me. It is all hear-say. I would like to give my personal experience with this place.
The first time I came here, they had all these recycled and fixed-up bikes out on the sidewalk. Potential customers are allowed to give them a test-ride. They were all priced. Inside the warehouse are tons of bike parts, wheels, bikes, etc and everything was priced as well, and priced fairly.
I bought a 3-speed, $60 recycled bike and I even prefer it to a $500 hybrid that I bought that same year. It's got a little rust on it but feels like an extension of my own body. They installed a kickstand on it for $5 as well. I needed a good bike pump and they had one for $45. I only had $30 left in my wallet and the man smiled and said he could let it go for that price. So I was given a $15 discount on an awesome bike pump that I still use to this day. The customer service was fantastic and I have no reason to assume that these people were trying to rip me off - quite the opposite, in fact.
I came back several times to test-ride other bikes and even though I never bought anything, they were nothing but courteous. -

I got a used bike here for my 9-day vacation in montreal. only costs me $60, yes it's a shitty old rusty bike, but it's functional. much cheaper than renting one for $20-30 a day. also with bike theft such a problem in this city, you dont' want to leave a nice rental bike outside for more than a few minutes, I saw so many bikes locked on the street with seatpost or a wheel missing.
Also this is not just a used bike store, they sell nice new bikes and accessories as well. -

Velomakak is a very unique place in Montreal...yes, they have the most extensive selection of parts, old bikes, pieces of bikes, horns, seats, posts, frames...you name it...So you can find some pretty awesome stuff here. The problem is, there is no price on anything. And when you find someone to ask the price, you get some random number that is not all that low, with a smirk. You feel like negotiating, but they generally don't seem to like that. You can't escape the fact that the people running this place have a big attitude and they definitely don't give a hoot about customer service. I get the sense they don't like Anglophones, but maybe that's just me projecting some insecurity...either way, it doesn't feel comfortable shopping here. We were told the cost of repairs would be ... eh, $35, not more than $40, and then the "bill" was $65...what do you do then? Well, negotiate? I don't know...we wound up paying near what they asked...but the whole experience really left a bad taste in our mouths...despite the quality workmanship.
