I've recently become a semi-regular frequenter of the Varscona and it's because of Rapid Fire Theatre. A friend and I were bored on a Saturday night and took a suggestion to come here and watch some good old-fashioned local improv. I like to count it as one of my greatest life decisions.
Rapid Fire is amazing, and while the venue can sell out pretty quickly on a good night, it's still cozy and intimate and allows the players to really interact with the audience.
It also helps that it only costs $10 to watch CHiMPROV. #pooruniversitystudent

This is a fantastic venue for local theatre and improv.

Having been to countless shows here from fringe productions, to the weekly improvised soap opera Die Nasty, to the awesome shows put on by Edmonton's own Rapid Fire Theatre (specifically Friday night theatresports for us) I have to say I love the venue.

No matter where you sit, you will have a great view of the stage. The seats are fairly soft and comfortable (unlike a lot of smaller venues where you get a hard plastic seat, or wooden riser even) and it's no problem to get settled in for a couple hours.

It's location in the heart of Edmonton's vibrant theatre community is perfect, as there are a lot of choices for things to do, see, and eat before or after a show.

I've been lucky to catch a lot of great theatre here. Improv on Friday and Saturday evenings, plus other plays along the way.

Improv here is a must-see. I love taking friends from out of town to the Varscona to catch the great local performers here. This is also a frequently-used venue for other shows throughout the year, and especially at the Fringe.

I watched a play titled "Gargamel" at the Varscona a couple of weeks ago. It's a nice, intimate place to watch a show, and it's nice to have snacks like beer and candy available in the lobby. Be warned, though, that the bathrooms aren't very nice.

Come by during Fringe for the nightly improv soap opera for some major laughs and very impressive performances. A great venue featuring some great actors and comedians!

OH MY GOODNESS!  Theatre sports is by far the best way to spend a Friday night in Edmonton.  I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard!  In fact, it's now Sunday and I'm still laughing!  So basically what Theatre Sports consists of are different improv comedy troops competing for your laughter and trust me - YOU WILL LAUGH!  The host, Julian (I'm not sure if that is the proper spelling or not) should have hi own show on the comedy network as far as I'm concerned.  Theatre Sports runs from 11:00pm - 1:00am.  The intermission half way through is a great time to stock up on Twizzlers or Super Nibs (7 for $1), pop, coffee, hot chocolate, or even a cold beer.  Unfortunately, the Varscona doesn't have a lot of funding and therefore hasn't been able to revamp their restrooms, but with the level of entertainment that you are getting for a measly $10 at the door, it doesn't matter.  If you haven't been to Theatre Sports at the Varscona - it is a must see!  Get there early though because it sells out fast!
