Excellent food and service. Best Thai I have had in a long time. My favorite is the green curry, and salad rolls :] nice little venue with about 36 seats. Definitely coming back.

Review from DineoutGal A.

So to clear up some info here....the original "Lao Thai" which started on Selkirk Avenue and then moved to the St. Anne's location for the last few years has now moved back to Selkirk Avenue (confused yet?). LOL. So the one on 763 Selkirk Avenue is "Lao Thai". This one, which I have submitted an update to the info to Yelp, is "Vanxai's Lao Thai" has taken over the St. Anne's location.
No worries, other than the signage out front and some staffing changes, it's the pretty much the same place. The owners here are related to the other Lao Thai so I assume most of the recipes are pretty much the same. The menu has some updates to it but otherwise, my faves are still available.
My all time favourite chicken soup in the world is made here, formerly called "souk gai" but it's now on the menu as #19 gang som gai ($9) with the addition of tomatoes, which weren't in the original one. But it's the same aromatic, flavourful soup that has lots of herbs and ginger. Go for a level 4 spice and it will clear your sinuses.
The #13 wonton soup ($7.50) is different from the typical Chinese version as the dumplings are made of chicken instead of pork. The dumplings and the soup are very mild in flavour - not my thing but good for those who don't like strong flavours.
#34 Red Curry ($9.75) with chicken starts off as a level 2 spice so anything else you ask for is added on top of it. I don't find that the base level has much heat to it so I would go much higher. But if you're not into spicy foods, than this base level of heat will be just right for you. The red curry is very smooth and creamy and has lots of brococoli, bamboo, onions and green beans. I'd even say that the portions look a bit more generous than Lao Thai.
#36 massaman curry ($9.75) is a sweet yellow curry that has a mellow peanut flavour to it. There's a lot of depth to the sauce and it's definitely very creamy. Ordered this dish with chicken, it also came with potatoes, onions and whole peanuts that were added near the end giving the dish an interesting texture.
Service is extremely friendly and engaging. Food service was fairly prompt. Two people can easily dine here with 4 dishes for $40 before tips and still have leftovers!Listed in: Favourite Ethnic Restaurants, Favourite Dinner Spots, Winnipeg's Vegetarian/Vegan…, Steals! Great value and good…

Review from John I.
Toronto, ON
Coming from Toronto, I didn't know what to expect in terms of original Thai cuisine. Fancying mostly restaurants off the Yonge Street area, I was under the impression that I was going to be served ingredients consisting of fresh mango, lemon grass, lettuce wraps, etc.
Having visited the Peg and craving some authentic Thai food, my fellow Fudie suggested we try the Lao Thai Restaurant.
Located in a neighborhood in the St. Anne's area, it was clear that the outside of the restaurant was a bit antiquated. However, when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was clean and bright. The ambiance was fair and comfortable. Water glasses were large and the liquid was cold on fresh ice.
The server was quite knowledgeable, friendly and courteous. He asked me what my level of spicey/heat tolerance was and I bragged that in College (down in the U.S.) I was known as the "Spice King". The Spice King he questioned? Yes, I responded noting that while I was attending a four-year college, I was able to withstand some of the hottest habanero salsas at a local eatery off the University campus. He commented that I would then enjoy the '3' level of spicey.
Here is what we ordered:
Souk-Gai - a deliciously fragrant soup with great flavors of cilantro and ginger and sliced chicken. A very spicy soup, charged with a very able helping of chili flakes and special seasoning.
Kua-Som-Yum - A mix of shrimp, cauliflower, red peppers and onion in a thin red sauce. The shrimps were cooked perfectly but the veggies probably needed to be cook more thoroughly. I really enjoyed this dish and felt it was nicely peppered. I should let you know that this was a '3' level of spice.
Gang-Keo - a chicken in green curry and coconut milk with onions, green beans, broccoli and red peppers. This was way too hot for me. It overwhelmed the underlying flavors of the dish and wasn't as enjoyable. Again, we had the '3', but I would recommend a '1' or '2' level.
Bottom Line: This Spice King gives Lao Thai the Royal Assent. -
