The early darkness of winter is good for one thing: scoping out the moon from the telescopes outside the Vancouver Telescope Centre.
Amble by on any evening and the store staff (and curious locals) will be peering through the binocular-lenses of one of the massive telescope barrels. The telescopes range from long and skinny, to something a Star Trooper would use.
The staff were awesome on our last visit -- lining up the telescopes so we could see the moon and really just wanted to share their love of universe-gazing with us. There is lots of light pollution around, so it's not hardcore star-gazing. But it's a nice option to, briefly, escape the head space of the city. -

I wandered in here one day while trying to kill time waiting for a friend and was pleasantly surprised at how helpful the staff were despite being obviously just wandering around killing time.
A whole store devoted to telescopes! With friendly staff that were explaining all the differences it certainly made the impact where this is the only place I think of when someone asks about or mentions telescopes.
In fact as a result I recommended this place to a friend who was looking at purchasing one for his father, which to my understanding turned out great. Kudos for great servaice. -

When I was a kid, I'd always ask for a telescope for my birthday. Seriously. I never got one, but at least I can live out my childhood fantasies by visiting this shop. There is a guy in the summers that lets you look through his telescope on the beach and I think once I saw Venus or Jupiter or something. Anyhow, the store has ta-da! Telescopes. The staff are probably all trekkies, either way they are very nice and friendly about what it is to look for when you are investing in a telescope. Cool palce to visit on a weekend or to break awkward conversation.
