Review from Sharon B.
VOWSA is a group of people who swim in open water, mainly the ocean but also in lakes. Do you like swimming, especially outside? Then VOWSA is for you!
They offer evening swims at Kits Beach, Mondays and Thursdays, with a lifeguard escort and lots of other swimmers for company. Sometimes there is a seal or two also.
For those with a more competitive nature, they have 3 timed events in July: Canada Day Classic at Sasamat Lake in Port Moody, the Bay Challenge, a 9km epic from West Van to Kits Beach (solo or relay), and the Kits Challenge with a variety of distances.
My personal favourite is the Canada Day Challenge. A great way to celebrate the day, and I prefer fresh-water swimming in the lake rather than the ocean. Sasamat Lake is in a beautiful location--every time you turn your head to breathe, you get a gorgeous view of the trees on the surrounding mountains. No waves to mess up your breathing too.
VOWSA is completely run by volunteers and proceeds go to BC Special Olympics.
