    * A very appropriate exhibit for Vancouver approaching 2010 *

This small teaching museum located in the basement of the Jewish Community Centre just started a new exhibit called, "More than just games: Canada & the 1936 Olympics."  It is worth a visit to learn about the Olympic games that took place in Nazi Germany.

It is a small exhibit, but is very educational.  Some of the highlights were the video of Canadian athletes giving a salute to Hitler (apparently the Olympic salute looks very similar to the Nazi salute), the background stories of the various Jewish athletes from Canada and Europe and how they struggled with the decision to take part in the games, and the portion of the exhibit explaining the Nazi theories about Aryan physical superiority and how that tied into the logic of the games.

And the interesting fact that I didn't know before is that the whole flame relay (which coincidentally will start in a few days in Greece for the Vancouver Olympics) was actually started as part of the 1936 Olympics as a propaganda strategy of the Nazis to give the games legitimacy.

Admission is by donation.  Definitely worth checking out to keep the Olympic games in perspective as they approach.
