My dad recently had a hip surgery here, and his stay was pleasant.  His biggest complaint was the food! (not surprising)

He said that the nurses and other staff were pretty friendly and helpful.  There was only one nurse that was odd and unhelpful.  My dad was particularly impressed with the physio therapists that were on call; I believe he really liked Amanda.  She was very personably and funny, which made the recovery period much more enjoyable.

This review is 2 stars because I want to give it 5 stars, but at the same time I want to give it ZERO stars based on the nurses in the ER ward.

    Please read on-

5 stars:  Norm a very kind older nurse in the ER was probably the only nurse I encountered who was kind and caring and treated me with consideration.  This world needs more people like Norm!

ZERO stars:  The zero stars go to two of the other nurses who were assigned to my room.  One was Katie and the other was Katie's relief nurse while she was on break.  Unfortunately I was treated horribly by both nurses.  After being brought to room A11 Katie's relief nurse comes in and says, "I'm going to take your blood pressure.  C'MON! RAISE YOUR ARM, YOU'RE NOT DEAD!!!"     I was not in a state to be able to talk back or raise my arm for that matter.  Heck, I could barely open my eyes and keep my head up!  Why does the hospital hire people like this?  They are the antithesis of what a nurse should be! Katie wasn't any better to me.

The sad part is, all the docs seem to know that some of the nurses are just horrible and I was told "We can't do anything about it.  Their union is stronger than ours."

I have an unfortunate story with a sad ending. A relative with a life long history of mental illness and addiction was again admitted to the VGH psych ward by the VPD. Two days later  he "walked away from the locked ward" and successfully committed suicide.

How can he walk away from a "locked ward"? Well when we visited the ward a few days later to pick up his personal affects we found the door propped open and easily walked in and out ourselves. The sign on the door said "keep closed at all times".

The door is right next to the nurses station where it took a minute or two before we could get some attention from staff. It was almost as if they didn't want to look up from their workstation for fear that someone asked them a question. I know it must be a hard place to work but shouldn't psych nurses be trained in communication skills and be open to conversation with patients and visitors to facilitate healing? Not just administer drugs and ignore people?

If nurses are too highly trained to act as security guards then VGH should hire security guards to monitor access to the psych ward.

Checked into emergency after the civilian treatment for H's foot was less than successful.

Can't rave enough about the knowing, attentive and expert care H received from emergency care through his three day stay.

See ya all again on Tuesday!

Who ever likes hospitals? Not me, that's for sure lol! I have never had to use their emergency services but I have had experience with the staff in some of the pavilions and I can say that they are amazing.

I usually have appointments in the Leslie and Gordon Diamond Care Centre and boy was I impressed. The building is a beauty and you will find a coffee shop (where the staff are friendly), a sushi bar (which I haven't tried yet), a Shoppers Drug Mart and a Shoppers Drug Mart Home store. When you go upstairs, each floor has floor to ceiling windows in the middle which look down onto the main floor and lets in a load of light.

Another plus is that all the washrooms, or at least the ones on the floors I have been on, are clean and have sanitation stations! You will also find sanitation stations by all the elevators.

Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) has  900+ hospital beds that offers a variety of medical services to residents across BC.
VGH is a teaching hospital, affiliated with the University of British Columbia.

VGH is a large maze of buildings and corridors which can be confusing for visitors. Maps and volunteers are sometimes available to help guide you to where you want to go. Staff are often willing to help direct you in the right direction.

Care that you will receive can vary from unit to unit. I have not been a patient so I cannot speak much about this.

Overall, as an employee, a positive place to work, as there are many opportunities to specialize in different areas as well as being part of a supportive teaching environment.

I started my adventure at VGH 6 weeks ago when I broke my wrist. I have nothing but good things to say about the experience. The staff are friendly and helpful.

The waits in the trauma centre and specialists office can be little long, but the ER was very quick.

Even though the staff are great, I hope I won't see the for a while. :)

VGH is sweet. i was taken here after getting smoked by a car on my bike. although the ER is a madhouse of trauma and pain, the staff take the time to introduce themselves and offer you a caring experience. once taken to the x-ray department i was very well cared for by no less than 7 different nurses.

i was in and out in 3 hours. way to go VGH!

I called the operator to ask for the the best way to deliver flowers to my mom who just had surgery. She was rude, terse, completely unhelpful and all she said was "I cannot give you any information. I cannot give you any information. I cannot give you any information. Would you like me to transfer you to security?" What kind of PR is that?? Ridiculous. Unacceptable. Idiotic. How about some basic manners?

I've been visiting the hospital over the past week to see my mother in law.  It's an interesting maze of buildings with a lobby reminiscient of an Embassy Suites hotel.  However, higher floors have an amazing downtown view.

I also take comfort in the sanitation stations which are at every entry/exit to zap any possible germs.

The staff has been great during her stay so no complaints there.  I would note that there has been some confusion here and there which can be unsettling when life/death decisions are being made.  My mum had like four or five doctors visit on the first day, each one not really knowing what the other had done.  One told us that she would have a CT scan the following day but they we told it had been done a few hours before and we were waiting for the results ...

Only additional complaint would be the disappearance of personal belongings.  We left mum on the first night and she was moved after we were gone.  The next day we arrived to discover her shoes had went missing.  We went to lost/found but no luck -- they told us to file a police report.

Oooh, how i HATE hospitals...i would avoid one at all costs!!!
but i shall find myself here, in the radiology section of VGH a few days ago for a biopsy....
i must say, i was 'checked in' real quick (considering i had an appointment, i guess that helped)...
i had a lady doc (nurse? i dunno) named marina get me all set up in my open back gown and onto the table...she had the most lovely ozzie accent =)  she was really down to business...telling me what to expect and what she is going to be doing.
started off with an ultrasound..she was precise with her instructions and i had no complications.  after we were all done, she had to leave for a bit but brought me back a hot blanket to snuggle in while i waited.  she then proceeded to explain to me what the doctor would be doing once he got in.  i won't lie--i was freaking out a little.  i think she noticed because she reassured me that it wouldnt hurt too much...except maybe for the anesthetic needle... she even made a little joke that people often think the biopsy needle is the length of an arm and the width of your hand...but it isnt.  its really rather normal.  she got a chuckle outta me. =)

the doctor came in soon after and once again re-ultrasounded me (to make sure he finds a safe place to insert the needle)... can i mention that he was a hot asian doctor? too late, i already mentioned it.
he and marina both took such care of explaining the procedure step by step to me and what to expect... by the time it was explained the 2nd time, i actually didnt feel nervous anymore.

honestly, the procedure was pretty darn quick, but it did hurt a bit... i could definitely feel that needle being inserted and travel through my insides...ugh, ok, too much information?? ha ha...

when i was done, i had to lay on the side they inserted the needle for an hour to put pressure and deter any bruising or bleeding.  marina had another doctor come visit me to explain some of the yucky feelings i was getting after the procedure and reassure me that its normal and that i would be okay.

im thoroughly impressed with the way i was treated and how the doctors all were thorough with their explanations and didnt brush my questions and anxiety aside (which i have seen in the burnaby hospital when my grandfather was admitted for something....oh, i was certainly pissed right off!!!!)

thanks VGH! i still hate hospitals...but i guess it ain't all that bad...

Adding to my list of reviewed Health facilities is Vancouver General Hospital. As the name would lead you to believe, yes indeed, it's the big giant hospital right by city hall meant to serve the better part of Vancouver. I didn't have a choice in going here but I gotta say, overall , good experience.
Due to their doctors realistic assessments of bed/doctor availability with people treating me for appendicitis at UBC (see the review of that for more gory details) I didn't have to head down there until absolutely necessary. Then, I didn't have to wait long to get a room, and a room with a fantastic view of the city for that matter.  I was in and out of surgery in less than 5 hours and all the treatment was great.
The missing star comes from the usual ups and downs of Canadian hospitals and specifically the 'learning hospital' nature of UBC. My attending was pretty dead set on removing my appendix in an old timey style to show his students how and it took some 'seriously?'s on my part to convince him to try the standard, modern methods. Also, due to the usual bed shortages I was physically in and out of the hospital in about 19 hours which most of my physicians and the nurses themselves deemed insanity as nobody really watched to see how well I recovered.
That said, I was healed and quickly and  the facilities seemed pretty glossy and state of the art. If you have to have an organ explode in town, have it explode here.
