If you want to get active, the U of A's Campus Rec program in the Van Vliet Centre is a great option, whether or not you're a student. You don't need to be going to U of A to join the gym or sign up for any of their great classes. There are student and non-student rates, but either way the prices are great, compared with other gyms and fitness studios in the city. A yoga class, for example, costs about $15 drop-in at a private studio. At the U, you sign up for sessions, but it works out to something like $5 or $6 a class. The U also has a good pool, but a younger, fitter crowd goes there so when I'm not feeling too in shape I don't like going there as much. Their badminton courts are not bad, but I prefer the ones with the hardwood floors. The other one has lighting that's too bright. You can book courts to ensure one to play on, as it gets quite busy. The gym at the U has some good equipment but it's too small for a school of over 35,000. You need to go at odd hours for it not to be overly busy. Finally, rec classes like social dancing are great but they fill up fast. You need to pretty much stand in line when the new term's classes open for registration. Some of the more popular classes fill up within the first couple of hours.
