Oh, Valley Bakery, release me from your grip!
VB has been my long time go to bakery for celebration cakes and other wonders of the baking world. Let me tell you about my breakfast this morning...
Picked up two Napolean/Vanilla slices yesterday. Ate one as evening dessert and just finished licking the plate which held my breakfast slice. With Kicking Horse coffee in the french press, and the cat in my lap, this sweet delight was Sunday morning perfection. Now I am restraining myself from picking up the few crumbs that landed on the page of the New York Times.
Sunday mornings are made for this.
Back to business. The mocha cake is a beaut - creamy and cool, totally perfect for afternoon coffee with your colleagues. Serves two addicts, or eight reasonable people.
All of the cakes are made with real dairy, so must be kept refrigerated - which only increases the taste quotient when served with a full bodied coffee. Chocolate, vanilla, lemon cream, all done with a lovely European flair - butter cream icing and custard filling are like a siren call for those of us brought up on Euro baking.
For newbies, once you bite into one of these spectacular delights, you will no longer crave the colorful bombs from your local supermarket.
VB has a large selection of cookies, too. And a granola bar that tastes way better than it looks! The small tarts and "boats" come with whipped cream, or fruits, or flavored buttercream, and are perfect for pastry trays for dessert buffets.
Located in Burnaby Heights, with lots of street parking, and free parking lots one block south of Hastings Street. -

My colleagues wanted to get a birthday cake for our other colleague for the office. I picked up the cake and I also got some other treats to try out. I like the small pastries so you can try different things. I think the Vanilla squares and key lime tarts are great. The cake we got was very good, it wasn't overly sweet. I like the layout of the bakery with a lot of window displays. Great bakery and customer service.

This place can be addicting! Their sweets are really too sweet (that's why I opposed to 5 stars), I think that's how Europeans do it? They sure have a wide variety of sweets in their display and it was really busy on a Saturday afternoon. I was so enthralled with the sweets that I didn't notice the buns. I said to my friend I am only getting 1 item. Here's what I got:
Eccles cookie-pure sugar, Lemon/Key Lime tarts, Petit-Fours - so cutely decorated in Xmas designs, and Cream puff-texture of the puff was absolutely perfect, cream inside was almost like rich ice cream
Overall, this place is really high on quality, and quite a variety. Very reasonably priced (I got 10 items for $10). Our server was really nicel, genuinely smiled and happily answered our questions about how often they bake everything.
I just love Hastings Heights and the great food they have there! I'm really interested in the Marzipan log...YUM -

I found something that I'd consider dangerously good... these vanilla squares... creamy vanilla filling inside flaky pastry dough with icing on top... yum...
Ironically bought after going to the dentist for a cleaning... forgive me for I have sinned... but I can't help my craving for something sweet when the need (or boredom waiting for a bus) arises... -

This is one of the best bakeries I've ever been to. I didn't really have a reason to go here until recently when I was in charge of the cake for my friend's birthday. And I though, well if I'm in charge of it, then it's going to be the best damn birthday cake ever. And I instantly thought of Valley bakery because I've heard so much about it from others.
I special ordered a cake and I think I was one of those pick y customers. But they stayed really patient with me as I tried to decide whether I wanted nougat or chocolate butter cream frosting, and asking if they had any frosting samples to aid my decision making. In the end they actually sliced a tiny bit off of one of their cake squares in the display for me to try the frosting and it was definitely one of the best cakes ever! It was not too sweet, fluffy, airy, and the frosting was creamy, not too sugary. Everything was made with fresh ingredients and the quality was apparent. I ended up ordering a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting in between the 3 layers and the Hazelnut Nougat frosting on the outside. Everyone at the birthday party complimented the cake!
I think I will be getting the train-shaped cake for my 4 year old cousin's birthday coming up next. And while I'm added, I might pick up a few of the other pastries in the display that the previous reviewers have written so amorously about.Listed in: Best Desserts in Vancouver

I definitely second all recommendations for the Valley Bakery. They have great breads and buns all for very reasonable prices. But, like the previous reviewer, what gets me is their desserts.
As a kid I grew up with dutch neighbors and got used to their almond delights and various great desserts. Valley's specialty is European desserts and some of their German cream cakes and dutch baked goods are dead-on when it comes to authentic taste and quality.
If you're looking for something specific it tends to be the best idea to pre-order as Valley is very popular and always running out of some of their treats. If you're in the area though and looking for a little snack I'd definitely suggest Valley being your first stop. -
