There is definitely a hot pot sub culture simmering, and I'd reckon that if you didn't go with those hip to the scene, you'd overcook your veggies and tofu in spicy broth and then spend the rest of the evening trying to decide if pork skin and tripe were the right decisions.
Big thank yous and five stars go to Larry and Jay who a) told me what everything was that was going into that rolling boil of broth and b) served me when I didn't want to go fishing myself.
Here's what I learned:
-Veggies in spicy broth makes for an even spicier experience. Proceed with caution.
-Soya wrap is hella good!
-Dumplings are awesome in soup!
-Broths have various things swimming in them - think barks from trees to add flavour.
-When in doubt, close your eyes, count to ten and hope that the meatballs are cooked all the way through. Was that really pump cheese inside?
-Letting your food cool off for at least 10 seconds before eating is just common sense (says my upper lip after a bit of a scorch).
-Fishing for your food is even fun as an adult.
-Plum juice makes fatty foods or spicy foods more easily digested, or something to that effect.
-AYCE hot pot doesn't always come with a tiered plate system (think high tea), but by the sounds of it, it should.
Oh, and I can't forget, AYCE dinner conversation amongst yelpers can be quite useful, funny and cool (of course): From 4 different ways to make congee to who really owns slap chops and snuggies, good company and comfort food really go hand in hand! Now what's on the plate for next time? AYCD (All you can drink) bubble tea, White Spot Pirate Packs or the third leg of the poutine tour? -
Review from Larry L.
So the U-Good part 2 went well.
I heard that last Saturday wasn't so good at U-good, but today for the Yelpish event it was pretty good. Same people and our hostess was as cute as I remember.
She remembered my name. Awesome!!
We had a group of 10 for the event, most of them Yelpers and a couple were Yelp curious.
Stepehen Y, Jason L, Dru, Nam N were all there.
The place is bigger than the old one. twice the size and just as nice.
Same menu, you get $20 for the AYCE but there is the cost of soup added on top of that cost. So a group of 4 lets say would split the cost of an $8 soup. Still not bad.
So I'm going to have to come back again for another session with hot pot.
Even Simon K came by for a visit. He was hot potted out, but still came by for a drop in and said hi.
The meat looked good and the wierd stuff that I like was good too. You know, cow stomach, porks blood etc. Yummy. Joyce missed a good one!
So Did Hilda L too!Listed in: HOT POTS!!!, UYE = Unnoficial Yelp Events

U Good is So Gud, thanks Larry for getting us to go!
Non-stop ordering and eating, and shooting the breeze with some new friends was all fun and slurping. You really get to know someone when you're all eating from the same pot!
So many ppl present so many different kinds of hot pot eating styles:
-There's the ppl who will use separate chopsticks to put stuff in the hot pot
-There's the ones who just put everything in to let it cook whether they are gonna eat it or not and expect everyone else to eat it
-There's the people who order like crazy but eat little
-There's picky eaters who won't touch pork blood or intestine like Jason L
-There's my non-Yelp friend who can eat alone 14 plates of meat (AYCE hates him)
-Then there's his girlfriend who eats very little and mostly veggies (AYCE luvs her)
All in all, hot pot means cooperative eating! Works with hot pot but probably not a big bowl of rice.
PRICE: AYCE! With couple beers or drinks only $30 pp incl. tax/tips.
SERVICE: Great service! They do forget some stuff you mark down a lot, but you just wave the waiter and ask for it they'll bring it in a jiffy.
SUGGEST: U Good is still the best! Roomy and the gold tiers to hold all the plates is a great idea, more room on the table for me to make a mess. And U Good carries all the ingredients I REQUIRE in my sauce mix. -

It was tough to find this hidden hot pot place in Union Square, but as we entered, we saw these fancy 3 tiered holders on the tables with comfy leather wrapped 'bouncy' chairs for guests.
We go to quite a few hot pot restaurants and this one quickly climbed up my list of favorites. The food was fresh, portions were good especially for AYCE so you don't have to keep re-ordering. They had a wide variety of choices, from all the different cuts of beef, to all the balls you can think of, and of course all the items for the adventurous diners.
There were at least 10 different soup bases to choose from, but each with an additional fee that is higher than most hot pot restaurants ranging from $5-$10. Each additional sauce was charged extra, and they charged specialty items as well. So with all those charges, the $18.95 per person goes rather quickly.
Of course with the great company and colorful conversations, the 2 hours time limit flew by and we were full to our throats! Topping it all off with some cool chocolate ice-cream :)
I would dfinitely recommend this place and visit again!Listed in: Neighbourhood Gem
