What a cool idea at a cool place!

First, the cafe was extremely cool because:
    1. it had a Latin American flair (including Guatemalan hot chocolate on offer by donation, in honour of the Day of the Dead)
    2. The great food and friendly service
    3. The social justice focus ('pay what you can' lentil stew for those who can't afford a pricey meal and various other initiatives)

As for the Book Swap? Well, put me with a group of awesome people and add a pile of books and my inner bookworm couldn't be happier. I love perusing friends' bookshelves and borrowing books that sound interesting and this was a similar idea.

Thanks ladies for a super chill night!

It's so amazing what you can learn from other people!  Thanks so much Kat for teaching me how to knit!  I have always wanted to learn how.  And now I can't stop thinking about it.

It was also a lot of fun getting together with a bunch of Yelpers and chatting in person, rather than the Talk thread and Compliments. :-D

Rhizome was doing a Dia de los Muertes celebration so there was Mexican hot chocolate.  Yum! Thanks Cyndi for the hot chocolate and lava cakes!

I think I came out with some interesting new books also. I'm going to learn how to pick up chicks with "The Game."

All in all, it was a great low key way to spend a Wednesday evening.

WOW. This UYE hit the spot.

Rhizome was abuzz with activity for Lost Souls Day. They had mariachi music playing, candles lit, people honoring their passed loved ones with special offerings... it was a unique experience that was beautiful and strange at the same time. Our table was near the windows and kept on growing! We had seasoned knitters and a crochet master (seriously--Emma is making the most incredible crochet dress) as well as a newbie knitter being shown the ropes, and of course, books. Lots of them. Our table was practically overflowing with books, which made for some fun jokes. Next, people would try to 'sell' their books, as in, try to convince people how great it was so that it would be taken. We teased Kat about not being a good salesman ("this one is depressing... but it's really good") but I got The Golden Compass series off of her, so that was sweet!

A lot of the gals I recognized from Yelp but hadn't met in person yet. How amazing to bond over hot chocolate, crafts and books. It was like balm to my soul to have this girls nite out! Ainsley and Ty were the unofficial girls of the evening and made great additions.

I need more nights like these...

    Thank you Kat for organizing!

Rhizome was packed and buzzing by the time I got here! Luckily you intrepid girls had snagged a table, and I was able to squeeze self, books and knitting into a corner. And eventually, a delicious, satisfyingly strong margarita (in honour of Dia de Los Muertos) and a grilled veggie sandwich.

I think we all breathed a sigh of relief when the occupants of the table directly across left, so we could annex their table to expand our elbow room and for the piles of books (and DVDs) we brought to trade. I ended up with six great new books to read, plus a DVD. Loved it when Kat took charge and started "selling" the remaining books after everyone had made their initial selections.

Once the swapping was all done with, I felt I could get down and work some rows on my knitting project, which was also started thanks to the motivation of Kat's previous Craft Night at Rhizome. I think we need to have some more of these - both for the knitting and visiting and for the chocolate lava cakes. Mmm. Melty.

Amid the chaos, it turned out to be a rather chill time.

Thanks everyone for coming out to the book swap!  It was fun, I met new Yelpers, and most importantly we swapped a lot of books!  Next time I will call ahead with reservations.

We also gained two new knitters last night.  Woohoo!

I hope we can have more of these events in the future.

Thanks to Cyndi for the delicious hot chocolate and lava cakes.
