So I've heard of URBN and a lot of people say that they are the Bar Basic of North Park. I've been on yelp, reading about them and their pizza do look very similar. It's not a bad thing because I LOVE Bar Basic's pizza. S0o... if it is similar.. then thumbs up for me because its a closer drive!

Anywho, My friend and I came here recently and the decor is very similar to Basics'. Concrete floors, brick walls, private seating, giant and ridiculous metal fan... Hmm.. same owner maybe??

Anyway.. our server was really nice and gave recommendations which we took. We ordered a white pie.. half eggplant parm and the other half mash potatoes.. and we had ordered red sauce on the side just because I wanted to try it. We also ordered a small salad - the caprezanella. The pizza was delicious! I preferred the mash over the eggplant just cause it was just more rich in flavor. So yummy! I also dipped it in the red sauce which made it even yummier! (I love tomatoes). As for the salad.. I didn't care too much for it.. it was pretty much chunks of cucumber, tomatoes, and mozzarella balls, pretty darn basic.. I couldn't really taste the red wine vinegar.. Not a big deal anyway cause I did come here for the pizza.

This is a very "chill" pizza joint compared to Basic. It's like.. the hipster/cooler brother of Basic without the testosterone. lol.

Beers and Pizza...what's NOT to like?
This is definitely a hipster pizza joint. Big open space to chat with friends and drink among a pretty big selection of beers. If you do get a pizza (pizzas are on a bigger side, order a small for 2 people and you will still have extra), you MUST get the mashed potato pizza. I know what you're thinking...MASHED POTATOES?!?! yep! it works perfectly well and the thin crispy crust makes it even better. THey give you freshly grated parmesan and a a herb mix. I love to eat my crust with the parmesan and the herbs so I am not just eating plain bread/crust.
They have a sister restaurant in downtown called basic, but I like this location better because there is more dining area here than basic and basic gets WAY to busy on the weekends.

    I LOVE THIS PLACE!

They finally installed booths so there's more seating!  Mashed Potato Pizza, bigger bar, bigger floors, strong drinks.

What more can you ask for?!

A small pizza can feed two hungry hippos. Ordered the sausage & peppers combo only to find A LOT of peppers and specs of sausage so the pizza should be renamed. Added some mushroom to the pie for protein sake and it was filling. Enjoyed the thin crust. Drinks were so-so. The Mule was refreshing and the ambience was mixed during a Friday night. The establishment always seems to be redecorating too--- in a good, modern way.

The exterior looks more like a nightclub, especially with a bouncer standing at the door checking your ID. Aside from the bouncer, we did see a few toddlers and kids inside.
We came on a Saturday night and did not have to wait very long. There was only another couple in front of us.
This place has a very hipster vibe with the exposed brick, minimal design and the use of mason jars. They have an extensive beer list and full bar. I had the first cocktail on the menu and it was good.
Although all of this was very good, we were most impressed by the pizza! We ordered the mashed potato small pizza and some chicken wings. The small pizza was more than enough to feed 2 people and have some leftovers. It's a white pizza with a layer of mashed potato, pancetta (bacon) and fresh mozzarella. It was so enjoyable, I really didn't pay any attention to the chicken wings!

Wanted to try this place a couple weeks ago, but the wait was an hour.  So going back tonight we only had to wait 20 minutes.  We decided to stick it out, I really wanted to try this place, and the rest of my party hadn't been there either, except one and all he had was a beer.

We get seated, the place was full, and really really loud.  With the tall ceilings, loud music playing, and everyone yelling their conversations to each other, I had to yell at my friends from across the table.  That was really annoying, and pertinent to my review later.

We look at the drinks/menu for easily 10 minutes before the waitress comes by, we order cocktails and my friend was quick enough to deduct that this would take forever and ordered a salad for all of us to share.  15 minutes goes by and our drinks come back and she takes our order for pizza.

About 30 minutes after ordering, our salad comes.  Then we continue waiting.  I would have liked to have had a more detailed conversation with my friend, but I didn't want to yell across the table and blow out my voice.  Besides, I couldn't hear anything, we were all frustrated about this, but patiently waited for our pizza to arrive.

We got seated at 8PM, at 9:30PM I had to ask our waitress how much longer it was going to take to get our food, she did not bother to say anything to us, apologize for the wait, nothing.  I understand that its a Saturday night and you guys are busy, but its not a sudden surprise that a restaurant on University Ave in North Park would be busy on a Saturday night.

If I knew they had to mine the coal, and have it delivered from District 12 just to prep our pizza, I would have gone somewhere else.  Yes, I just threw a Hunger Games reference into this review.

Pizza wasn't even all that by the time we got it, around 9:45.  The chicken on the pizza was disturbing, it tasted like it was pre-made and prepackaged, then sent to them.  Which is absolutely disgusting, for almost $30 for a pizza, that chicken had better be fresh and it should be F-ing organic as well!!!!

There are much much better wood fired pizza places, THAT ARE CHEAPER, and more importantly have good service.

1 star for the cookie sandwich.

Came here with a few friends again for a late night rendezvous from the North County... we indulged ourselves by sharing a reg. pepperoni, mushroom, sausage red pie but decided to try a few of their drinks. I was a bit under the weather at the time so it was ginger ale for me. I know I party hard!

Pros: pizza still tasted great from when I last went there...
I like the huge openess of this place
    pizza came out fairly quickly
drinks were incredibly strong despite its small size.

Cons: waitress took a bit long to come around to us
she kinda made us feel rushed in terms of eating
    pizza crust was burnt. sad.

Side note, there was loud music playing at this place and apparently someone thought it would be cool to bring a baby into a place like this. I'm sorry, do you want to blow up your kid's ears?! really?!

would i come back here again? definitely.

Urbn is probably my favorite restaurant in North Park. The mashed potato pizza and the bbq chicken pizza are to die for, the service can be a little slow, one time we had to wait 45 minutes for a cheese plate, seriously, a F-CKING cheese plate. But the drinks are good and the pizza is delicious. Their free pizza with a pitcher of beer is a killer deal.

Pizza is tasty and rivals Krust in the gaslamp.  Place is a big open space with ample seating and part of the bar extends into a long cafeteria style seating bar.  Makes for somewhat awkward seating but probably better when the drinks are flowing.  Bartenders are not as good as those at C&C while trying for that cocktail vibe. Go for pizza and a chill drink.

Summary: waited 45 minutes for a pizza and wings, then when asked where the food was, my group was told that it would be another 25. So we got up and left hungry and unhappy.

My last trip to URBN called for an updated review. The first few times that I went to there is was cool. The place has a nice environment, creative pizza combinations, good craft beer. The beer is a bit overpriced compared to bars near by that serve the same stuff, but I figure it's a premium for the food and environment. I really liked this place before, but after a few trips there where the service keeps getting worse, I'm changing my mind.

Went there last Sunday with a group of four and we picked it because the place was pretty empty so it would be easy to find a table. We placed an order for two small pizza's and some chicken wings. We waited around 35 minutes before we actually started getting pretty hungry and wondering were the food was. The server was not within sight so we waited another 5 before we got to flag him down. We asked him where the food was and he had a blank look on his face and said he did not know and where running a little behind. I had to insist on him checking the kitchen to give us a time. He came back a few minutes later and told us it would be another 25 minutes, which was completely unacceptable. So we got up and walked down the street to another restaurant where we can get some decent service.

I've waited long periods of time before for food, but it was never more than an hour and it usually came with a warning about how long we would have to wait. The fact that the server had no clue about the delay or the fact that we had waited so long for our food created a bad customer experience for us.

Any place that makes a delicious "mashed potato" pizza AND has a Big Ass Fan turning the air.......has to be good.
Reminded me of a place that we have in Chicagoland (Piece).
    Good salads
Small pizzas are good size so be careful if you are "trying a few"
Good beer selection...I had the Green Flash and also an Allagash White.
Check out where they store their table settings/silverware...in one of those big tool holders you see in an Auto Repair shop (cleaner of course!)

A restaurant need not do many things if it does them well.  URBN does at least three.

    1.  Outstanding cocktails.  I went outside of my comfort zone and got a rum drink, made with cucumber, lime, and mint.  It was clean, delicious, and refreshing and (mirabile dictu!) not very sweet.  My wife's mule, with ginger, bitters, and bisongrass vodka, was also a hit.

    2.  Excellent draft beer list.  It is not hard to have an excellent beer list in San Diego, where there is so much excellent local beer.  But it is hard to have a number of tasty-looking choices that I don't see very often, which URBN manages.

    3.  Very good pizza.  I believe it is billed as New-Haven-style, which may be a little bit optimistic, but it is still served on a very thin crust baked in a very hot oven.  I would categorize it someplace in between 2Amy's (which is more blistery) and New Haven (which is more toothsome), though not quite as good as either.  Still the best piece of pizza I've had west of Washington, D.C.

http://Bomb.com! This place is fabulous! The atmosphere, the food the drinks.  Loved it all.
I ordered their appetizer cheese plate, their meat plate and the not so "small" margherita pizza.
Im a cheeseaholic and I appreciated the quality of their salami and cheese board.  The raw honey was such a sweet and delicous touch to the app.
That pizza was savory and rustic.  The crispy crust with the sweet basil and cheese (I had them add gorgonzola to it too) was just a party in my mouth.
This was all shared between 3 people and we had to argue over who was going to have the last 2 slices of pizza... not only because it was so yummy but we were so FULL!!!
Ther service was great too. I am looking forward to eating here again very soon!

Great staff, delicious food. Drinks can be a little inconsistent because the sweet, sweet bartenders are more than happy to make things strong instead of well. It's a good place if you're just getting into drinking things besides vodka but they need to up their game if they want their drinks to be on the map.

URBN always feels pretty full, but coming on a weekend night requires a reservation.

The drinks are good here. Great beer selection.

The pizza is amazing. I've had the mashed potato pizza twice and was only told the second time that it must be eaten with hotsauce. It was good the first time, but it was amazing the second time. Hotsauce ftw! I love the URBN salad as well. It is delicious, fresh, and crunchy. I liked it better than the tomato salad.

If you are an eggplant nut like myself, I highly recommend the eggplant parm pizza. The sausage and pepper pizza is pretty great too.

The only reason I gave URBN 2 stars is I'd feel like a jerk b/c there pizza is pretty great!!  But this write up is on the service....well lack there of!

I am a pretty laid back/understanding  gal when it comes to food service...so I feel this write up should say a lot if not ring a bell for others who have gone to eat here.

It was a busy weekend night ... But seemed the servers for the tables were good to go despite the crowd. Took awhile for our server to come by...but after ordering brews and food were were go to go...well good to go is all were we almost 30mins later with no beer/drink orders brought-we were only a table for 2?!- we saw our server deliver brews to others that dat after us and attempted several times to snag her. Our impression is she totally forgot to put in our bev if not food order also?

After a hostess flagged her down she comes over empty handed and gives us a long story to how the food/bev ticket must have fallen and that was the delay? I was thinking....'At least you could have brought our beers THEN shared the non-believable story...lol!! She left for about 15mins - we then got the picture that our table seemed to be the desert island and even smoke signals wouldn't seemed to have helped...we just ended up leaving...to frustrated...hungry and parched to give word of our ' curtain call'. Even though URBN has a great unique space and great pizza  for NP...this experience/service or lack there of had me 'keepin' on keeping on' to the next  BETTER spot...Basic,Local Habbit, Leftys,Bronx, ect...so many others!!

I really debated writing a review on my experience on 5/5/12. I spoke with the manager and was offered a nice discount as I explained the situation with our waitress. He was helpful and made my table feel better about having to wait nearly 2 hours for our pizza. The food/drinks and manager ensure that I will consider going back. He really seemed to care. It is what happened after that conversation that really upset me.

Long story short: After basically being ignored the whole night, then bringing this to the manager's attention, the waitress had the audacity to say "SMELL YOU LATER" to my table after we paid our bill.

You have got to be kidding! I had friends in from out of town and I wanted to show them a good time in San Diego at one of my cool neighborhood spots. To make it worse, it was my birthday celebration. I have NEVER been so happy to leave a restaurant in my life. We are not 19 year old kids... or people that would find this funny. We are in our 30s, we work our asses off and frankly, I was totally embarrassed.

Came in Saturday night for two beers because I knew friends were there and had a decent experience. Note that three stars does not mean lame, I just wasn't in love.

First bartender threw me off a bit, asking for my money before he poured my beer, but the second guy was on it (paid w cash, otherwise I'd give that guy props).

There were a lot of different seating options, which was nice. Not sure how crowded it gets on a normal night, but it was a good scene there for sure.

Cool looking spot, mix of people, crowded by not crazy crowded (it was also raining this weekend). My friends dig this place, so I'm sure I'll be back.

I came to URBN with a group of about 20 people as one of our stops on the Social Cycle. At first I was a bit confused and felt like I was walking into an industrial warehouse. This place is definitely the definition of a sophisticated hipster hangout, which follows the trend of North Park.

As soon as we were seated, water was promptly served. In a few minutes, the growlers of beer came out. They have a fairly simple selection of local brews, but keep it at just the right level to satisfy the beer tastes of any one. If you're looking for more selection, they have a wide variety of bottled beers as well, including two beers from my favorite AleSmith.

The food selection is fairly minimal. A couple of appetizers, two salads, and pizza. Since they are known for their pizza, there's really not much else you should be looking at.

We ordered a pepperoni pizza, vegan pizza, and margherita. $25-28 for a large. Fairly overpriced in my opinion for something so simple, but not so harsh when you split the bill between 20. Their pizzas are thin crust and very simple. Reminds me a bit of Cheeseboard in Berkeley but doesn't live up to those standards. All the pizzas tastes fairly good but they just lacked any content. It takes a lot for a thin meat-less pizza to achieve greatness and only few have done it. They unfortunately have not. I will attempt to come back and try the mashed potato pizza, but for now I'm not too convinced. Maybe I'm just not hipster enough...

This is the best pizza in North Park. The scene is trendy; the space is big and we had a server who was amazing. Hard to forget a girl named Sam, but seriously she was an upbeat happy server which was a plus. The beer selection is great and the food is the bomb. It's so hard to find a crust that I like. Their pizza dough is not doughy and thick, but the perfect thin crust you can imagine. The kind that you think about the next day and want your leftovers. You can build your own pizza from a bunch of different options or order one of their popular choices. I never write a review just on the taste of food but also the service provided . It's an awesome thing when you get a server who makes your dining experience worth going back. Thanks URBN

Shame on me for not having reviewed URBN. I'm rather disappointed in myself.

I'll make this quick and simple. URBN is my favorite place in North Park.

Mashed potato pizza + pint(s) of Allagash White = WINNER.

Not sure how I feel about the newer booths in the middle in place of the pub style tables, but this place could have no tables or chairs and I'd still come here and sit on the floor.

This place catered to us very well. We had our company party here for lunch time and they delivered. All of the servers and also the manager were very nice.

We ordered around 15 pizzas. All came out nice and hot. We got: cheese, eggplant, mashed potato, BBQ, meat, and veggie. I ate the mashed potato, BBQ, and meat. The mashed potato was interesting, eating carb on carb. The BBQ was tasty and the meat was good. All were thin style pizzas with fluffy, crunchy crusts.

The decor is cool. Very big restaurant, so you won't have to worry about rubbing elbows with other people. There is a lot of street parking around. It's not in an area with other restaurants or bars. What was nice was they used mason jars for most of their cups.

Swung by this place with some friends on a Friday night.

    It.

    Was.

    Packed.

Its all street parking, but I was lucky and scored a street spot one black away. The bouncer was nice and didn't give me any crap about using my passport since I had just renewed my DL that morning. Met my friends inside, and after a brief chat made my way tot he bar to get a beer. Holy canole it was nearly impossible to elbow my way in to get close enough that the bartender could hear me. A group of sorority girls had taken over a large portion of space in front of the bar, and despite already having their drinks, (I know this because they were all in a circle, extending the drinks in the center, and hollering about ZOMG SHOTS!!!!!eleventyone) they refused to let anyone invade their precious real estate. I finally used my purse to "herd" one inebriated coed out of my path and got the bar. La chouffe in hand, I headed back to my friends, running in slow motion as the Rocky theme played overhead.

They have a SUPERB beer list.

They have SUPERB staff. We were seated reasonably quickly, the staff was attentive and even shooed out some people hovering who were not there for dinner but were so close to our table one of them was hitting my friend with her oversized handbag. We're a sensitive crowd who prefer to enjoy a meal without being jostled.

Overall it was a positive experience but I would much rather come here on an off night and avoid the swarm of bros.

Making reservations: They required a $50 deposit which could be used towards the bill or refunded upon our visit.

Atmosphere: Pretty modern, open spaces, long tables.

Drinks: $9 for a cocktail is too much - happy hour price of $6 is much more acceptable (although still expensive).

Food: Tried five pizzas: mashed potato, bbq chicken, chicken & spinach, margherita, and sausage & peppers.  Favorites were mashed potato and bbq chicken, least faves were chicken & spinach and margherita.

Overall, a good place for a casual dinner and drinks with friends, although it gets pretty expensive.

Loved this place! The environment is extremely relaxing and fun. The servers were all very attentive. I tried the wings which was cooked very well. You could taste the ginger in it. I also ordered 2 small pizzas (to share with friends) and the portions are great! I got the Sausage and Peppers and the Chicken and spinach. Both were delicious. I guess the only down side of the pizzas was that I wish the pizza dough part was thicker.

Looking forward to trying Basic in DT. Supposed to be the sister restaurant or something.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Seriously, it is so good, I don't even mind when I get black stuff on my teeth from the pizza bottom....it goes with the deliciousness.

A small pizza goes a long way, unless my friend Court and I had a bad work day, then we can finish a whole pie.  Yes, the mashed potato pizza is good, but the fried eggplant is amaze-balls!  My go-to is fried eggplant, pepperoni, and bell peppers or artichoke.  The urbn salad is also really good, pears, salty cheese, candied nuts, yummy, except sometimes it's a little overdressed.

I don't think I've ever had a bad experience with a server here, but I've had 1 or 2 times when someones been a little unattentive , but I think it's because the place is just a large open space and you forget which tables you went by already...and its 1 or 2 times out of 50.

Great place to bring family, friends, a date (the BF and I come for our birthdays, anni's, religious holidays, etc. :P).

    Oh yea!!!

I didn't realize I had eaten at their other location in Vista until the food arrived but man, was I glad I found myself here for dinner one night.

The pizza is just fabulous and fresh. I like the whole coal fired situation. The crust is smokey, the pizza was thin and really, really delicious. I can't wait to go back and order another.

Fun atmosphere, excellent service, friendly and quick and just an overall great dining experience for Mrs.Steve M. and I.

    Check it!

I've been here a few times and wasn't going to write a review until I read another review saying they have the best pizza in San Diego. That reviewer must've left out a couple of words and meant "best too-thin overpriced pizza in San Diego". If you want true thin crust Italian-style pizza try Pizzeria Bruno Napoletano. My (Italian) wife and I are constantly trying pizza around the city and that is our favorite by far.

The service at URBN also breaks down when they get busy. We've had bartenders be very rude to us when there are lots of customers and they are clearly in over their heads. A bartender has to be able to maintain good customer service no matter how busy it gets. The number of craft beers you have on tap does not change this.

Finally prices are too high. Getting a $9 cocktail that has very little alcohol in it is ridiculous. As is a large margherita pizza for $28. URBN has the potential to be a lot better, but they have some work to do.

Ok, I love this place.  Maybe too much.

Classic cocktails, amazing pizza, friendly staff.

First off, if there are 3 or fewer of you.  Order the small pizza.  The small is basically the same size as a cookie pan.  The pizza has a great crust and uses the best toppings.  This is a California take on New York pizza - think Alice Waters in the Bronx.  Actually scratch that, the crust is too doughy for New York.  The toppings are great, top quality sausage, peppers etc.

Ok, now this may seem like a small thing, but it charms the hell out of me:  the pizza comes with five silver ramekins of side:  salt, pepper, oregano, dried peppers and parmesan.  This is the best presentation I have seen for pizza.

Now for the drinks. I am a huge fan of classic cocktails: Sazeracs, Manhattens, Sidecars etc.  The Georgia On My Mind has become my favorite version of the boilermaker.  The bartender are willing to try new stuff with you, such as my favorite take on a Bourbon and Ginger

    1 ;part Canton
    3 parts Bourbon
    lemon juice
    2 dashes of Angostura Bitters

The space is a split place:  front half an open long bar with bar tables, back half the restaurant.  The bar serves food and the restaurant, booze.  The staff is great, friendly, knowledgeable and well trained in the classics.  My bar test, the Sidecar (you either know how to make it or you don't) showed little variation.  Over 5 weeks, each one was good.

My only complaint, and it isn't really one, is the salads.  I like them both.  That's right, both.  Would be great if they had some more on the menu, if only because the two they have are so good.

BTW, they have an underpublicized lunch special: small pepperoni and mushroom pizza for $10.00 till 4.  But as things change here all the time, check to make sure they are still offering this.

Also, the pizza photo on yelp does not do the food justice.  It looks much better than that.

What can I say that hasn't been said already?  Let's start with the most important part:  the pizza.  De-effing-licious.  I can have their mashed potato and pancetta pizza anytime.  Thin crust and the actual outer crust is one of the few I'll actually eat.

So. many. beers.  Have an inkling for something specific?  Chances are they've got it or something like it that will please you.  Want liquor?  Get a Pimms Cup or any of the classic cocktails for $6 til 8.

Happy hour - Buy a growler, get a free small pizza (which can easily feed 3).  Who can beat that?

Great place to sit at the bar or facing the street.  People watching a definite plus+

    Mashed Potato Pizza.
Sounds weird right? But it is soooo dang good!!!!! The pizza has mashed potatoes, cheese, and pancetta (FANCY BACON). And it all goes together so well! The potatoes are creamy and fluffy it tastes like a special layer of cheese on the pizza. And the saltiness and fattiness of the pancetta goes perfectly.
We also ordered the caprezanella salda, it was a fancy more dressed up caprese salad and it was one of the best salads i've had! TRY IT.
Urbn is in the heart of N. Park right across the street form U31. We came here on a Friday night and boy was it packed, but it was cool since we just went across the street to U31 to get our drizzy drank on and then when they called us when our table was ready we were a bit buzzed and ready to eat some PIZZA.
Urbn also has a full bar with a very long and extensive booze list and a bunch of awesome specialty drinks and a very nice beer selection. I had a belgian white that was VERRRRRRY DELICOUS and went well with my pizza.
    I'll be baaaaaack!

    - yummy drinks

Dropped by with some friends on a Saturday night. Inside was huge and dimly lit. Not overly crowded, just enough people there to fill up the bar and all the seating near the bar.

I had a gin and tonic and another drink from a small (specialty?) drink menu. The name slips my mind at the moment but I remember I really liked it, ingredients included cucumber which I could really taste and made the drink very yummy. The group sitting next to us got a delicious looking pizza which we were eyeing in jealousy, something I must remember to try next time I come by.

Chill vibe and music, good place if you want a laid back night out.

Just ate here the other night because we were craving pizza and they definitely did not disappoint.

We ordered 2 small pizzas: eggplant parm as well as the bbq chicken and they were both perfectly crisp, loaded with flavor, and HUGE! There were 3 of us and we all left stuffed with two boxes of leftovers.

Overall the meal came out to around $35 (w.o drinks/tips) which was great considering how much food we got.

We'll definitely be back to try the mashed potatoes pizza!
