The gentle luxe of Urbanity Salon called to me from a distance. Out and about for a waterfront mosey, I was not in the market for a hairdo, but this chic little spot caught my eye. Its open door and large store-front window revealed a definite urban appeal and called for further investigations.
The first thing I noticed was the great local art on the walls. Halifax's own, Sara Carachristi, is a fantastic young artist who's work includes a theme of people-watching, and portraying these people outside their usual environments. She works with polyurethane, which creates an unusual gloss over the paintings, so its almost like ceramics. We used to show her work at a gallery I used to work at, and it was definitely work people flocked to.
The stylist who greeted me further revealed that the salon often rotates local art, and this is was a definite pull for me. With a small but separate space to take a peek at new works, what isn't to love?
What could've been a lovely but forgettable browse cemented itself in my good books with the stylist's great service. As I peeked at the product, she gave me the down-low gracefully. A new brand from Australia, she asked me about my own hair type and whipped out a few samples for me to try on my own.
A serene space and high caliber demeanor, I would happily head back to Urban without a second thought. In talking with the stylist and viewing the salon, its quite clear that this is a professional space for hair with expert opinion. Good job with the good impressions-- I am sold!
