Review from Carl D.
Sunday evening of the U.S. President's Day Weekend, when we Yanks had made our escape to Vancouver, we met with a couple of long-time friends who recommended the Urban Thai Bistro as one of their favorite Thai places.
It was great!
Located in Yaletown, the Urban Thai Bistro has a pretty extensive menu of Thai food, from appetizers to desserts.
Our friends recommended the set dinner for four: spring rolls, chicken satay, jasmine rice, chicken in a coconut curry, Pad Thai, beef with asparagus, and sweet sticky rice for dessert.
The food was delicious; very nicely done, and an excellent value. We'd certainly go back! -

This is an interesting restaurant especially in comparison to Simply Thai which is within spitting distance. It has a very large, well-appointed dining area. The lunch specials are very reasonably priced, typically around $9. My group was also able to get a further discount, so the whole bill per person was about $10. You get a small salad, a delicious spring roll, and a plate of rice and curry.
I enjoyed the decor and the ambience. The service was brusque but efficient. The food tasted quite good. -

9:30pm on a Sunday night and starving yet lazy to go out to eat, so I turned to yelp to help search for places that delivered unfortunately no where I had chose was opened until I found Urban Thai Bistro.
I ordered a single size tom yum goong soup, red curry chicken, chicken & beef skewers, beef with basil and coconut rice. ($63.67 a bit pricey)
Everything was good, not the greatest Thai food I've ever had but it did the job. The coconut milk over powered the curry flavor in the red curry which somewhat tasted a bit bland but the chicken was tender and was a good serving size.
The beef with basil had a good kick to it, not too spicy but I must say I can take a lot of heat. None the less it had good flavor.
I think I might have gotten regular rice instead of coconut rice just because I didn't taste any coconut flavor! Perhaps a mix up in the kitchen?
Skewers were delicious, tender and juicy. It came with 4 skewers each.
I wish I could rate the Tom yum goon but my boyfriend drank it all but in his words, "it was alrighhhhhhht."
I would definitely like to eat here, check out the atmosphere and try out other dishes.
Urban Thai Bistro has been added to my list of, "places to order from when I'm lazy." -

Their Khao Pad (signature) fried rice is really damn good. For that reason alone it is worth it. For those who live nearby, I highly recommend curling up with a bowl of their khao pad and some spring rolls for a good night in meal.
Took one star away for the high prices but I understand rent is pricey in this neighbourhood. -

3 words: RED CURRY OSTRICH
Have you ever tried ostrich? No, you say? Well I did, so let me tell you about it. I went to Urban Thai Bistro and while browsing the menu I see Ostrich on the menu. I'm thinking "probably looks and tastes like chicken but hey, I'll give it a shot." Conclusion: Not like chicken. The colour and texture is more like thinly sliced beef.
Let me tell you it's pretty fantastical. I've eaten my share of "exoctic" animals but nothing has quite come close to this.
Thin sliced ostrich meat, slivers of coconut meat and lychee in a red coconut curry, served in the hallow of a real coconut!
I ordered it with some rice and it was magical.
Go here. Try the ostrich. You won't regret it. -

An authentic Thai restaurant along Hamilton in Yaletown with great service, a warm ambience and great price points for quality and portion. With most of the dinner menu items under $15, this spot is great for everyday casual dining when feelin' thai!
Mark H and I dined here while filming a segment about Yelp for ShawTV with Kendall Harris (@Wine2Three). As recommended on Yelp, we started with spring rolls - nice and crunchy! Next up, was the Kaeng Kiew Waan Gai (Green Curry with chicken), which was delish! Good spicyness to the coconut milk and tasty eggplant, mmm! I'm a big green curry fan and yes, I would order it again :) We also had the Pad Thai with stir-fried rice noodles with shrimp. It was a great experience!
GM Panee was very kind and shared little tidbits about curry and the spices that work well with each when we asked! Did you know that fresh green chile is used to make green curry and long dried red chile makes red? News to me! Also, the owner of the Thai House Group, Desmond Chen also stopped by to introduce himself! What a cool, friendly guy and a fresh face for the Thai House Group! He's very very personable :) Definitely stirred my interest in checking out Charm Saturdays and the new upscale Pink Elephant location on Alberni! -

I think this will be my 10th Thai review - unfortunately it's not a super good one.
I got the pad kee mao and my friend got a chicken dish. While his chicken dish was nice and spicy and had plenty of solid flavor, mine tasted more like too much sodium and olive oil. The chicken was minced like ground meats, and everything was chopped so fine it was hard to detect any individual flavor, it all melted together into kind of a large, gross, brown pile of food.
The location was just down the street from my hotel and in the summer this place would be a great outdoor place to eat at, just don't eat their noodle dishes. I think I've had take out here before with the pad see ew and it wasn't that great either... -

This is by far, my favorite thai place in vancouver. Even though there's not a lot.
I used to always order take out from here when I was working in the movie industry. it's those compact lunch specials that gets me. dining in is great too, but i must say, i've only been here for lunch. the green curry/combo type things was always fantastic .... from what i remember, anyway. -

One of my favourite lunch destinations in the city. Their lunch specials are excellently priced, and I honestly have never been disappointed by a dish there. All the curries are high quality, with my personal favourite being the yellow curry.

WE were in Vancouver looking for somewhere to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary weekend and just decided to explore downtown on foot. We took the Sky train down to Granville and walked to Hamilton to check out the restaurants. Urban Tai Bistro looked interesting and we both love Thai food so we decided to try it. We almost left since no one acknowledged us after we were seated but fortunately our waitress arrived just as we were deciding to leave.
Overall the food was good. The only issue we had was I ordered the Pad Thai - "nontraditional". Apparently I must like the traditional. The Tom Yum soup was great - but it could have used a little more spice. They do not give you a level choice of spice - the cook must look at you and decide. LOL
What put them up to the 4 stars was - I asked could they recommend a nice place to go for dessert to finish our celebration - and our server said she would check. After a few minutes I asked another server and she left - then came back and said they are making a surprise.
Shortly our server arrived with two rice cake desserts shaped like hearts. Ahhhhhhh. That would have boosted them up to 4.5 stars except the delivery left something to be desired. The brought the dessert placed it on the table and left. No real congratulations, etc. but then they did not have to make that effert so we appreciated it.
I would go back but if you go - don't expect great service. -
Review from Mark D.
Similar to Simply Thai (also in Yaletown), this is a basic Thai restaurant. Pretty much everything about it is straight up the middle. The ambiance is basic, clean, and simple. The food is consistent. It is good but not great. The ingredients are fresh. The meats are generally tender. I've eaten there more than ten times. I've never had a bad experience. The service is always friendly and fast.
Along with my friend, we always ordered the same things.
Chicken Satay
Gai Yang (Charcoal grilled 1/2 chicken with Thai herbs)
Gai Pad Prig Khing (Boneless chicken with green beans, lime leaves & spicy sauce)
Pad Thai - Traditional - Stir-fried rice noodles with shrimps, ground peanuts, chilli paste & bean sprouts
It always comes out the same. We enjoy it each time. This is not stellar Thai food. The seasonings are not layered enough for that. However, it is good and the service is friendly. -
Review from Betty L.
My dining experience at Urban Thai wasn't all that great. I had better Thai food in Vancouver. I went with a group of girls for dinner on a Friday night. The place wasn't full ye the service was still slow.
My friend and I shared the deep fried prawn cake and pad Thai. I also ordered a Toom Yum Goong Soup. It wasn't spicy enough, and I couldn't taste any classic fresh ingredients in the soup. It should have a nice lemony taste from the lime leaves and lemon grass, or the exotic aromas from the Thai ginger. It was just very sour. After that, I ate the prawn cake, it was a bit greasy for me. There wasn't anything memorable about it. The bad, eh-hem, I mean pad Thai just wasn't good. The noodles lacked sauce and the sauce lacked flavour. It should taste a bit sweet and sour.
With so many good Thai restaurants in Vancouvr, I wouldn't be back in a very long time. -

I was trying to work out whether this was a 2 or 3 * place. Really, it is 2.5. There was nothing wrong with the food - fish cakes were very nice, but it was just a bit ho hum really. A pleasant enough meal, service friendly and a touch expensive, but then it is in Yaletown!.
We were there at 8pm on a Friday night and it was practically empty, which is quite telling really. We only ended up here because we needed swift service and every where else was packed.
Wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.
Not a witty or funny review, but wasn't that sort of experience! -

The Urban Thai has been one of our favorite restaurants in Yaletown. It had been almost a year since our last visit and we were looking forward to a great dinner. The staff were very friendly and there were a few other dinners.
After we were seated, we immediately ordered the Gai Yang (Thai BBQ chicken) as it usually takes about 30 minutes to prepare. This is always one of our favorite dishes, well worth the wait.
We looked at the menu and ordered a few more dishes and settled in to wait for our dinner. Our first dish, Pad Thai arrived in about 10 min - which surprised us as we expected to be waiting longer because of the Gai Yang. However, we were hungry so dug in. The Pad Thai was disappointing - we suspected the meat had been precooked and then added to the noodles. Next came the Panang Currey which was warmer and had a bit more flavor. However, again we suspected the meat had been per cooked and then added - it did not have the fresh cooked texture and infused flavor of the currey.
Then the Gai Yang arrived. Usually this dish is the highlight of the dinner. This time it was the final disappointment - rather than being freshly grilled with herbs and spices, it looked steamed or baked. The chicken skin was soft, not hot and crispy as we have had in the past. the usual spicy flavor were not there.
We expressed on feelings to the staff when asked us how our food was. The waitress said she would convey or comments to the kitchen and offered us complimentary desserts. She later told us she had spoken to the cook but gave not explanation or response to our concerns.
The big question is did we arrive on a bad night or has the standards slipped badly at the Urban Thai? This meal could only be rated low to average. -

My Cyndi and I needed a girls night so we decided to hit up some Thai Food in Yaletown (she says hi and she will soon have her account so look out for her!)
Being big foodies and vegetable lovers, we ordered the seasonal vegetables and special sauce baked in foil and wanting to try something new and "in a coconut," we got the ostritch with green curry, eggplant, lychee, peas, coconut meat served "in a young coconut."
The food came out so fast it was awesome because we were starving. The veggies were nice and crunchy the curry was oh-so- creamy and delicious. The lychee were sweet and full of flavour and although I was expecting ostrich to taste unique, it tasted like beef, which I'm not complaining about.
Water was constantly filled and the waitress took the time to tell us about her assembly of fake eyelashes.
Prices are reasonable, especially in Yaletown. Can't wait to come back!Listed in: Vancouver Thai Anyone?

The Tom Yum Gai soup was VERY good and hit the spot on a slightly chillier day. I had lettuce wraps for my entree, and although I found the chicken filling tasty, the brown, wilted lettuce they served with the dish was disappointing.
Overall, I enjoyed sitting on their patio and my food, I just hope they get a fresher shipment of produce next time I'm there. -

Absolutely love this place. I've been here with friends several times, and even once brought 20 of my office colleagues to lunch here. None of them had been there before and became instant fans! I love Thai food and whenever I have the cravings, Urban Thai is at the top of my list!

With my friends visiting from Calgary and the mutual desire for delivery Thai cuisine, we first called Thai House and were told that because of the madness plaguing the streets during the Celebration of Lights, they were unable to deliver to our particular residence. Never mind, we called another Thai restaurant that just happens to be associated with Thai House and that would be willing to deliver!
Luckily for us, Urban Thai is just as good of quality as Thai House and has a very extensive and tantalizing menu. We ordered exotic ostrich satay with smooth and spicy peanut sauce, along with tasty shrimp cakes and traditional pad Thai, and everything was delicious, on time and affordable. A great option for Thai cuisine for delivery or otherwise! -

Went here for dinner on a weekday after reading some positive reviews. I wanted anything but pub food that night in Yaletown. The decor is average. From the outside it looked very empty and quiet which was misleading...people were hiding in the booths.
I ordered bottled beer (Singha) thinking that their tap stuff may not be that fresh. Wierdly enough, I am not even sure if the bottle was that fresh. The other guys complained that their tap beer was flat. Oh well, didnt expect great drinks at a Thai place anywayz.
I ordered their recommended Pad Thai. Big Mistake! It was sweet, almost ketchupy and the portion left me hungry at the end. The others seemed to enjoy their green curry, fried rice and ostrich curry although I wouldnt bank on that.
Overall, a very average and disappointing experience. The service was great...very polite and attentive. The food...not so much. -

I hadn't eaten in Yaletown yet so I headed over to explore the neighborhood and stopped here.
I had calamari and the Pad Thai Pe Ses. The calamari was excellent and was served with a sweet and sour sauce.
The Pad Thai Pe Ses was wonderful. It was a stir-fried egg noodles with chicken, ground peanuts, chilli paste & bean sprouts. The sauce tasted like it had a little ketchup in it, it was really a unique taste.
In addition to my meal, the menu was pretty extensive and the drink list looked pretty good so overall, I would recommend stopping by for a tasty Thai meal. -

Been here twice (once dine-in, once takeout) and the service was horrible for both. Slow to attend, and it took at least 30 minutes for a single takeout order even though the place was pretty much empty.
For $18, the green curry dish was mediocre and incredibly oily. Will not come back again. Simple Thai is a better choice and even Papaya Hut can do better with half the price. -
Review from Katie F.
Not the best Thai food I've had (the pad thai needs a bit of work), but definitely a solid restaurant that meets my needs! Came here with a group of friends so we had a ton ordered including soup, a spicy beef salad, spring rolls, a couple of different chicken dish variations, the Buddha veggie dish, fish, and a green curry.
Fast service for dinner and friendly in spite of changing our reservation several times! Everything was served hot and nice balance of taste and textures. Would come back again. A bit pricier than I expected for a group at a Thai restaurant at $35 a person when we split the bill, but someone got to bring home a ton of leftovers. -

Pad thai? More like, BAD thai.
Unoriginal jokes aside, I was in town for the Olympics last month and was completely unimpressed by this restaurant in Yaletown.
My two friends and I weren't that hungry so we ordered lettuce wraps and pad thai to split. Their pad thai was NOT pad thai. Not even close to any other pad thai I've eaten. It was drenched in what tasted like sweet and sour sauce. UGH. We each took a bite, made pretend vomit noises and then called the waitress over.
The very busy waitress said they only had two sauces... so they could put the other sauce on it. That made no sense and we were about to ask for something else, but she she rushed it back to the kitchen without waiting for our reply. A minute later, she brought the pad thai back (obviously just thrown back into a wok and covered in a slightly darker sauce...).
It was still awful, and by this time we were quite hungry. We didn't want to take a chance on another bad entree so we safely asked for another order of lettuce wraps. The lettuce wraps were OK and generously portioned, though a little too salty (didn't care at the time).
The service was actually fine---considering it was the Olympics and we had to send our pad Thai back twice. -

I've only been to this place for lunch, but if you work in the area it's a great choice. The lunch menu is pretty cheap and they give you pretty good portions.
The restaurant is big so if you want to go for lunch with a lot of co-workers and/or friends, they can totally accomodate you. Plus, they are super speedy so you can chat, eat, and go in a reasonable amount of time.
It's definitely not the best thai food in the city, but it's really good if you want it cheap, fresh, fast, and a good ambiance. -

Go here for their $9 lunch specials if you're in Yaletown, otherwise there's plenty of other better Thai choices.
Been here many, many times for lunch and it's a tasty option for the yaletown work crowd. However, it's very American-Chinese style Thai food in that flavours are toned down and everything is made quite sweet.
I have two dishes on which I measure a Thai restaurant (and I've been to many, inside Thailand and out): gang garee (yellow curry) and larb gai (minced chicken salad). They do a competent version of both.
Still, the food is quite tailored for Canadian tastes and really is more of a lunch place than a destination dinner place so I rate it in that context. Where I to rate it alongside other Thai restaurants I'd give it three stars. -

I popped in to Urban Thai for lunch today and my expectations were exceeded. When one eats in Yaletown one expects pricey food and pretension. Urban Thai's decor was the only pretensious part of the experience.
I ordered the default lunch special -- probably a good choice anywhere you go -- and it was fast, quite tasty, and very reasonably priced.
The lunch special was above average in taste. The veggies were great and still crisp and I gobbled up the sauce. Good portion size.
Great value, service was brusque but fast, and pretty much exactly what you want for a busy lunch! -

I was referred to this Yaletown restaurant after a job interview, and I was starving, having endured plane food the night before and no breakfast this morning. Red curry lunch special was mighty tasty, but I can't believe they charged me for tofu instead of chicken, when it said right on the menu they could make it vegetarian. Note to restaurant owners: making something vegetarian doesn't just mean removing meat; it means substituting protein.
The service was nothing to write home about. Each course was flung at me by the hurried waitstaff, despite the fact the lunch rush was well over. I've yet to find a Thai restaurant as wonderful as Original Thai in North Hollywood or T's Thai in Santa Monica. Even NYC's Thai has disappointed me. Can't wait to get back home! -

I was here during the Olympics. The vibe was just so great.
The food? Yes, I liked it. We ordered lettuce wrap, stuffed chicken wings (try this, it's awesome), Pad See-Iw and drunken shrimp. I'm not really sure if it's authentic or not but everything is really good. Yup, they made our drunken shrimp so spicy, liked it ha!
It was so busy at that time but the server was very attentive. She actually did a great job. For short, she deserved a good tip. 5 stars! -

Now that I'm semi-permenantly in the neighborhood - there's only so long you can avoid a restaurant before someone says "hey! Let's go THERE!"
So I gave Urban Thai Bistro a 2nd chance...
Am I happy I did? Hmmm... indifferent
Was the service good? Mediocre
Was the food good? meh... there were no veggies except bamboo shoots in my veggie red curry (I'm just saying...)

I went here on the yaletown shopathon event since we had free sangria coupons. The sangrias turned out to be about two inches deep in a tiny cup, but they were tasty all the same (and free, so I can't really complain).
My friend and I shared the spring roll appetizer and some kind of yellow custard like dessert (I can't remember what it was called) and they were both delicious. Someone from the kitchen also came by with a free sample of one of their salads, which my friend tried (it was meat, and I'm a veggie) and apparently it was also delicious.
I think I'll be back to try something more than an appetizer in the near future. -

Went with family. We couldn't decide on what to actually order so went with a family platter. The selection was quite good, and the food was delivered to our table at an appropriate time. In addition to the curries being tasty and the portions more than enough for four people the presentation was quite lovely.

I had lunch there yesterday with a friend. I had the 65S lunch special and Thai iced tea.
The 8 dollar 65S special came with rice, salad and spring rolls. The salad was not very fresh and had spots on it. The spring roll was a bit tasteless, but it was fried so I ate the whole thing. The main dish is basil pork with greens. It is pretty good, not the best. A bit too salty for my liking, but I guess that is why the rice was there. All in all it was a good value.
The place was very busy even at 1PM. The service lacked. Our iced tea came as we were served our lunches (which they came separately). -

Of all the places I've been to, this establishment is one of the worst I've ever dined in at. I had high expectations about this place because a lot of my friends and colleagues has nothing but high praises for them. Sadly, I'm on the other end of the spectrum.
My first experience with Urban Thai wasn't a stand out, but it wasn't a bad one either. I ordered the $9 Pad Thai platter to go. It came with a spring roll and a salad. The spring roll was nice and crunchy (I have a bias for fried food, I love it) It was full of good stuff. The salad, however, looked and tasted like it came out of a bag. The dressing had a nice tang so it was decent. The actual pad thai was swimming in the sweet chili sauce. There was shrimp, ground peanuts, bean sprouts and tofu chunks mixed in. There wasn't a lot of shrimp, just peanuts and tofu until I got to the very bottom of the dish, where all the shrimp as hidden. As was most of the tofu. The peanuts added a nice crunch to the dish and the bean sprouts was a nice contrast to the spice of the dish. Wasn't too bad overall but wasn't impressed either.
My second (and last) time at Urban Thai I decided to dine in. It was after the lunch rush, at around 1:30 pm so it wasn't busy at all. As I was seated, I thought I was sitting near their cooler because it was freezing cold. While I sat in the cold deciding what to get, I was waiting for someone to ask me if I was ready to order. I waited 15 minutes (they CLEARLY forgot about me) and gave up, so I finally motioned over a waitress and asked to be moved because it was freezing where I was sitting. Her reply? "Oh that's because I opened the door". No actually, it wasn't. The door is on the other side of the restaurant. I was sitting near the kitchen. Anyway, I ordered and waited and when I finally got my order, the waitress just passed by and left the soup on my table. No eye contact, no smile, nothing. At this point, I had a feeling I wasn't going to enjoy my meal. But I waited til I was finished to pass judgment.
I ordered the $8 boneless chicken w/ginger, green onions, onions, bell peppers and mushrooms. And since it was a lunch special, it came with a spring roll and salad. The same type from my first order days prior. Again the spring roll was good; the salad definitely came from a bag but the dressing was yummy. The noodle soup wasn't advertised as spicy, but it was a tad too spicy for my liking. It was presented nicely in an elevated bowl and had a fragrant aroma. However, the noodles were so bland. All I could taste from the noodles, mushrooms and the chicken was the spiciness of the broth. The broccoli and the mushroom tasted like it was dropped in 30 seconds before it was transferred into my bowl: almost raw. I couldn't taste whatever seasoning they put on the chicken (or the lack thereof) because of the spicy broth. On top of this disappointment, none of the servers checked on how I was doing. Not even once (so no water refill). I was unimpressed. Even as I was paying, the lady at the cashier didn't ask how everything went.
The bathroom is probably the only redeeming quality. Tiny but clean and well stocked. But I didn't go there to use the bathroom. It's unfortunate when their redeeming quality is the bathroom.
Would I come back? Definitely not. If friends wanted Thai for dinner I would recommend elsewhere. If they wanted to eat at this place for dinner I would strongly recommend against it. I'll tell them to find a different place. That's how unhappy I am with this restaurant. -

I have to be honest, the only Thai food I enjoy is Pad Thai. With that said, working in Yaletown it's hard to find a place to sit down for a hot meal with waiter service and pay less than $15 let alone less than $10 and that's what the Pad Thai platter is at Urban Thai. It come with Pad Thai, a spring roll and salad (albeit it's really just plain lettuce). I thought it was quite tasty and you can't go wrong for that price. I would definitely go back again.

Came for a Pad Thai and Tom Yumm soup with i thought was a great combination. The flavours were just ok and the pad thai seemed to be covered with too much sauce.
What i find most dissapointing was my dining experience. I came on a night that wasn't busy yet service was surprisingly slow
