Came here after UPF offered a 5-class pass on on DealFind, one of the Groupon copycats. Although it's a 10-minute walk from the Queen or Dundas subway station, it's still fairly central downtown.

When I arrived, I was greeted by Lindsy*, who was very cordial and made a strong effort to make me feel comfortable and showed me around. I had signed up for Total Body Conditioning, and since it was in the middle of the day, I was the only student that showed up. Not a bad thing, since it's like getting my own PT!

Mimi trained me and she was very organized, with a clipboard of all the exercises she was going to inflict on her victims ... errr, I mean, students. She made a strong effort to know more about me as I worked out, asking me about my background, my fitness philosophy and me as a person. This really impressed me, since most fitness instructors try to keep their distance from their clients. Mimi pushed me hard, but I think she was messing up my rep count, skipping numbers when she saw me struggling (or maybe I was too tired to count properly). I definitely felt I got my time and money's worth; unfortunately, I strained my biceps, overworking them and they hurt for 5 days afterward!

Another thing I like about this fitness centre is that there are showers with two separate stalls, including hairclips, hairties, shampoo, conditioner and body wash, in case you've left yours at home. You can also grab a towel, which is an added bonus, since I HATE carrying a damp towel in my bag!

Overall, UPF has their heart in the right place and know what they're doing. Their client base is small, as they are still pretty new having only opened in 2010, so definitely make use of this while you can!

*Email updates with fitness tips are sent out every once in a while. I found them pretty useful and actually worthwhile to read.
