Urban Grain Pizza isn't my first choice for a slice on Commercial Drive, but it is the closest place between my office and the Skytrain to my next appointment. Basically, it'll do in a pinch.
The whole grain crust is a nice change in flavor for me and I appreciate the variety of toppings available. I really liked that my slice was warmed in the oven for me so it tasted fresh, not heat lamp soggy. -

It was one of those days where I was craving a slice of pizza. You know those days...the tummy starts rumblin', you start thinking about food, and then you realize that all it will take is a nice, hot, gooey piece of pizza to satisfy you. My pizza purveying pal and I usually make our own pie at home, so we aren't too familiar about the best places to grab a slice in town is. Anyway, we were on the Drive and ended up at Urban Grain.
When we first entered, my first thought was how hot it was in there. The place was like a sauna, but at least it was decently clean. My second thought was that there seemed to be a fair share of vegetarian options. This was a plus. My third thought was how dried out and unappetizing all of the vegetarian options looked. Unfortunately, it was too late to back out now because as soon as I started staring at the pizzas, the girl working started staring at me. Basically, in my books, once you make eye contact with an employee, your fate is cinched and you're doomed.
I chose a slice with mushrooms and a slice with zucchini and pesto. Both were equally mediocre. The healthy dose of toppings couldn't make up for the cardboard crust, dried up cheese, and bland sauce. My companion fared slightly better than I with his meat slices, but perhaps I'm just more discerning... Ultimately, it could have been worse, but it could have been a lot, lot better. -

I agree with Simon. A lot of people sing the praises of this "healthy" pizza. Well yes, in some ways it is slightly better. However, it's still a carb-rich more calories than you probably need.
But in regards to other pizza places, I really like this. You can taste that the crust is difference, but at the same time the flavor doesn't interfere with the normal pizza flavor.
When I've stopped by, most things look fresh, and don't have the limpness of sitting under the lamp for hours. I think they get enough foot traffic in here to keep things constantly fresh. I like it. But if you're calling it health food then you're probably a person who gets a skim-milk mocha with the whip cream or a mcdonald's big mac meal with a diet coke. Don't go here because you're on a diet, go because the pizza's good. -

Unfortunately, whole wheat dough does not make pizza that much healthier, but if you're one of those "count the calories in advance" types, this place might have some kind of psychosomatic appeal.
Nothing exciting, the room has a modern décor that hints at being smug, which goes along well with the assumption that people who still use bleached flour should be considered savages. Perfect for people who drive electric cars, use natural toothpaste, and are vocal about their concerns over military spending.
Still, Urban Grain makes $2 slices that taste pretty good, but it might just be a matter of time before they start adding flax and hemp as well. -

This place, to use a somewhat offensive vernacular, is a wank. As both previous reviewers have noted it seems to think itself some sort of health alternative when in fact it's just as carby and fatty as other places. Sorry, not believing that.
What do you have when you take away that 'health' factor? Mid-grade pizza with so-called 'gourmet' ingredients on what I consider an inferior crust. That could fly with three stars normally but it's positioned on The Drive next to some of the most enjoyable slices in the city and, I've gotta say, it just doesn't stack up. Even the bad days at Fatih's and Four Brothers produce slices that are better than the pizza here and for half to a quarter of the price.
What this place has going for it is the nice interior. Not quite as cramped or gross as the other places and it definitely begs you to sit down. so they have that. Otherwise, it's a waste of time and money. grab a slice somewhere else. -

Ug. Worst. Pizza. Ever. Expensive as single slice pizza goes. Drab and dead looking under the hot lamps. Same taste. The crust is like cardboard. Healthy shouldn't taste like shit. And I doubt a whole wheat crust makes this pizza all that healthier. I should have tried the pizza joint next door. I was fooled by the cleaner, fresher looking signage. Maybe they get 4-stars for successfully marketing this garbage and staying in business.
