I love this shop! It's not really an antique shop - more of a second-hand / vintage furniture and collectibles store, jam-packed with the weird kitsch from my childhood.
My own house is a throwback to the 70s, so I've found tons of one-of-a kind things here over the years: a round orange vinyl ottoman on wheels - to go with the orange vinyl sofa I already had at home, of course. A vintage brown leather armchair. Cool little red glass candle-holders, and more.
The shop buys items and sells them on consignment, and the longer something stays in the shop, the lower the price gets. You can get some real bargains this way, but you have to be willing to take the chance that your little gem will still be around if you decide to wait it out. -

Hands down my favourite thing about Urban Cottage is the pricing system. They mark each item with the price they hope to score for it, then gradually, gradually reduce it as time goes by. If something's out of your budget, you can take a chance on coming back in a few weeks when it's cheaper. Assuming, of course, it hasn't been snapped up.
The stock is a vintage paradise with all manner of things just on this side of truly antique. It's a great place to find knick-knacks for decorating or gifting, furniture that's never seen a big box store, and just a wealth of things to feast your eyes and imagination on (what the hell is *that* for?, frex.)
And as others have said, just the building itself is pretty!Listed in: Downtown Gems

I love this place. I love that it looks dodgy from the outside. I love that people have no idea what it is. I love that you won't even know what it is when you step inside. I love that I've never bought anything here but that it's still a favourite place to shop. So, to review, I love this place.
Urban Cottage is a strange mish-mash of vintage and hard-to-find everythings. From large furniture pieces to figurines to...uh...well, any item that an interior decorator would use to stage a house for a photo shoot with Hello Magazine. Basically it's an interior design shop for people who don't want a single piece to be found anywhere else.
Prices are good, although that will definitely depend on what you fall in love with. Still, it's worth the occasional walk-through to see what forgotten heirloom you can give a happy new home. -

'Urban Cottage' is a little overwhelming when you initially pop in, but take a few deep breaths and you'll start to become acclimatized to what some would refer to as 'piles of old junk' and others would call 'antique collectables.'
I kid, sort of. There does appear to be some pretty neat finds in this shop, some of which still have a few good years of ware in them. Stainless steel beer steins, an assortment of old license plates from the maritimes, and washed up old buoys were some of the notables in my estimation.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this place is a bit of a treasure trove if you're willing to hunt around.
Prices are not negotiable based on a conversation I overheard, so be prepared to pay the asking price. -

Urban Cottage is a MUST for collectors, antique shoppers, and the regular Joe looking for a score. With its eclectic variety of original goodies, this place is a chest of treasures to marvel all the way through.
Its location alludes natural light and high ceilings amongst its architectural subtleties. Vintage furniture and tricklings of nick-nacks and collectables make sure there is no room to spare.
During my first walk through, the prices were a very pleasant surprise. I spotted a beautifully crafted oak dresser for a mere $90. A Parisian styled couch for $250. Chic lamps for $14. This place is affordable! And with signs all over the store advertising a 10% student discount, I'd say this is a spot to make a habit of.
Lots of vinyl here as well, although I noticed most of it to be more of the 1970's discotheque mentality. My sister and I picked up a vintage chess set for $18.95, which we were quite stoked about. I debated the purchase of an old fashioned umbrella, but at $30, it just wasn't quite as much of a steal.
This is a great spot for those looking to fill up the home with cheap and decent furnishings and decor. Not all of it is fabulous, but go often enough and you'll be glad you did-- the prices are fantastic. There are tons of special little items in here, from glass figurines, rotary phones, and toy ships to the vintage stove and cutlery.
Overall, Urban Cottage houses the sort of stuff likely to have been new and modern when the baby boomers were still babies. There is something wholesome here and reminiscent towards a simpler time. Lots of great finds. -

Imagine a rummage sale. Imagine a rummage sale with all sorts of offerings, from Victorian to Art Deco to 70's "Modern". Now imagine all of that rummage sale indoors and you'll have Urban Cottage.
Urban Cottage is tucked away on Hollis St, just a quick walk from The Split Crow (you'll be glad of this when you're through). On nice days, several pieces will lure you onto the sidewalk and then inside the store. Antique hunters may not go nuts here, but there's certainly enough to satisfy the casual looker. Urban Cottage offers excellent prices on vintage furniture. There's always something there that appeals to me (which isn't that easy, considering my wallet and I are dieting pals).
Pick the owner's brain to see what he might have set aside not yet on display. Haggle if you like. One thing's for sure: when you leave Urban Cottage with your purchases, you'll already be planning for the next visit.
And unless you're toting a dining table or that chaise longue that was in the back, make your way to The Split Crow afterwards. Surely a savvy shopping needs libation after their efforts! -

This is one store I keep forgetting to pop on in and take a look at every time I am shopping. But when I do remember, I'm always there a lot longer than I had planned. There is just so much to see at Urban Cottage! It is like treasure hunting!
To date I have purchased two lamps and a Japanese style Divider that looks like its a hundred years old. You can find amazing items for anyone at this store. Their variety is endless! The staff are very friendly and helpful and will give you a hand taking items out of the store if you are parked out front of course.
The only downside is you never quite know what will be expensive and what won't be. For me that is just a way of life when I go into an antique store. But at Urban Cottage I almost bought certain items until I saw the price tag, then I shyed away. But as I said, this is expected at an Antique store. However, what isn't expected is their pricing structure which is really, very clever if you ask me. They reduce the prices on their items by 5% every two weeks. That has the added benefit of giving us an opportunity to purchase an item down the road and gives the store a fresh new look since it attracts people to come back and help empty the store to make way for new inventory.
If you are walking around downtown Halifax and have no plans, stroll into Urban Cottage. Its worth having a look and I bet you will be tempted by at least a few items there. -

Take a step back in time, when you walk through the doors of Urban Cottage. You'll find treasures from another era. ..well a few different eras, all wonderful.
This is not your typical "antique" shop. For one thing, there's lots of space and things are beautifully displayed. There are settees and dining room sets, and lovely porcelain dishes. Jewellery from a time gone by. But I think my favorite are the old children's books in mint condition, like the pristine Huckleberry Finn hard copy printed in 1961 - and only $7!
This is a place to visit often, if for no other reason than to take a trip back in time. Of course, coming home with a treasure is also wonderful. -

I love the Urban Cottage. They have great prices and lovely treasures, plus you get to shop inside of one of Halifax's historical buildings - as it was a bank in the early 1900s.
Last time I was in, the man working (and perhaps the owner) showed some of us patrons the inner workings of a fantastic old jukebox that was sitting majestically against one of the store's walls. The Beach Boys blasted while we bopped around the store looking at all of the great antiques.
In the past, I've purchased a typewriter from the Urban Cottage, as well as some household trinkets and jewels. It's a really great shop, with lots of variety. I highly recommend heading into the Urban Cottage to do some seriously fun treasure hunting! -

This is a weird and wonderful place. I didn't give it enough credit when I first peeked through the windows - the name "Urban Cottage", which to me implies lawn ornaments and Adirondack chairs, seems ill-fit. It's a legit, eclectic antique store. I love old hand tools like the kind you often find here. The walls are covered in framed art - for sale - and the shelves are covered in surprising items. What I enjoy most are the odd little collections scattered around the store. Baskets of badges, photo albums full of vintage post cards, kitchen tools, ladies' hats, leather gloves...
Definitely worth wandering through some time, or on occasion, if you are into funky old things.
