Review from Jonathan S.
York, ON
I can't say for sure that I've picked the right Urban Barn, which makes this less-tha-stellar review unfortunate if I'm wrong.
This particular location is a big box store in the middle of a strip of big box stores. Older relatives who have more colonial tastes will probably head over to the large Bombay Company outlet next door.
Urban Barn seems to position itself somewhere between the Brick, it's streetwise little sister Urban Brick, and the ever-more industrial chic of Restoration Hardware.
If there were one word to describe the aesthetic, it would be "reclaimed".
High, unfinished ceilings above, poured concrete floor below; furniture is set out by grouping rather than by room.
Bedroom sets are mostly blocky and rough-hewn, but functionally-sized and suitable for your condo.
Rivetted metal accent pieces are suspiciously faux-spray painted, hinting at a previous life in the cargo industry. Ditto for teak-stained dressers, tables and chairs with 'packing stickers' varnished in. If it's possible for furniture to have "Recovered Memory Syndrome", you'll find it at Urban Barn.
At least it's durable and inexpensive, especially when on sale. It's more solid than IKEA, and much less expensive than Barrymore.
Service is pleasant but not terribly swift. We ordered a piece "on sale". We were asked to sign off on it as 'final sale' despite not being able to remove it from the box before we got it home. We refused. Manager obliged. We went to pay, and were told that 30% off of $400 was $15. A math lesson ensued. Manager obliged. The piece was left for us to carry from the showroom centre to our car. We asked for a dolly. Manager obliged. Upon showing the clerk the error of her ways, she then tried to apply the percentage discount after a gift certificate, which meant we saved less. We started to explain to the Manager again, but gave up. $10 wasn't worth the increase in blood pressure.
At least they sell rugs that really tie the room together.
