I started my studies towards the end of Rod Fraser's tenure as University President. Then, Indira Samarasekera took over.

While the school wasn't terrible under Fraser's leadership, it certainly hadn't made its mark on the world. Under Samarasekera, the school developed state of the art research facilities, and even now, nearly a decade later, these changes are still happening. I have, from the time she came while I was a student, been thoroughly impressed with her drive, passion, and energy, and still continue to be today. This is a school which is positioning itself to be a top post-secondary institution in the world, and it shows.

Depressing. This is a cold and depressing place to work and be taught. I am slightly ashamed that this is also one of my Alma Maters. This is purely a research school. If you have any interest in the arts, prepare to be downgraded as a student and treated as such. However the campus itself the physical areas, specifically outside is the best university I have ever attended or been to. Though I did not come here for the pretty trees and the wabbits.

It often felt like a looooong four years at the time, but I look back fondly on my time at the U of A and now it feels like it went by too fast.

I feel extra warm and fuzzy about the U of A because I worked on campus two summers, where the quad(s) look amazing. With the Edmonton winters we have, it's totally worth it to take a spring or summer class to really take advantage of campus. Being able to walk, not run between classes outdoors between buildings? Sweet!

Favourite spots are the open fireplace in SUB, Rutherford Library South (the upstairs with the big paintings, AKA Harry Potter room), and the pasta place in HUB Mall :)

A couple of big classes, but as an English major, most of my courses were 30 students or less! And I only had one truly terrible professor in my four years there.

I would definitely recommend the U of A to any students in the AB area. Tons of student clubs, on-campus jobs, and ways to get involved on campus!

The U of A is a great school! There's so many resources for the students, and most of my profs are great. It's also contains many of the best research facilities in Canada.

I haven't had the opportunity to study at U of A but have worked here for two years now and can certainly vouch for the high standards that this university holds.

I don't think many people in Edmonton realize that U of A is ranked 59th in the world among research Universities.  That's according to one scale of course, but it's a very well accepted scale with perhaps a few flaws, but good on average.  So 59th in the world is a great ranking for a research University and that's what U of A is.  It's great.

Now, the facilities available are pretty good at the U.  They have a great undergraduate vibe here which is something that certainly stands out.  A university is supposed to give a rounded education and given that so many different departments are literally world famous at the U, one gets the feeling that it's a great opportunity for anyone looking for that rounded education.

Food, coffee etc. is available in ample spots around campus.  I haven't been too impressed with the kind of lunch places that are there on campus, but can live with it.  As a postdoctoral fellow here, I've noticed excellent services pin-pointed towards the often forgotten group of about 1000 postdocs that supplement the university.  I'm certainly very satisfied with my experience here and look forward to the next year or two that I'm going to be here.

LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT...Its a city within a city. The culture in the area is fantastic. There are many groups you can join and a large selection of classes. The profs here excelled at their profession every class was enjoyable. Really found my identity here. Some calsses are large but like the world only the strong syrvive. I never had a bad year here and meet many new friends are created some great memories. The location is great, you can go for a walk in the river valley just a hop skip away. There are many places to be isolated as well. I was shocked as to the variety of secrret rooms and hall ways. I still go for walks here sometimes. If I win the lottery look out Student for Life.

Sure, it's not Harvard.  But it's darned close.
Sure, it's not warm in the winter.  But there are tonnes of places to sit and warm up, plus it's easy to learn how to get from one place to another through connected buildings.
Sure, it's not by an ocean.  Who learns when they can go to the beach?  Besides, the city has an amazing river and river valley with trails and parks galore.

The U of A produces top researchers and professionals.  I could go google stats, but so could you.  It's not so big that you get totally lost in the shuffle (if you know how to take care of yourself!) and it's big enough for a lot of fun during study breaks.

Don't hesitate.  Go to the UofA.

The University of Alberta is full value as far as post-secondary institutions go.  I had the benefit of attending the U of A  then UBC and it's only after you attend another university that you really come to appreciate the excellence being celebrated right here in Edmonton.  When I went to Vancouver, I naturally assumed that UBC would be gigantic in comparison to our university because of the population difference, but I was quite surprised to find out this was not the case at all.  In fact, quite the opposite was true.  That realization made me look up the actual facts and, sure enough, U of A was the third largest university in Canada behind only U of T and McGill.  On top of that, the University of Alberta also had larger and newer buildings than anything that UBC had to offer.  Mind you, UBC won out on the sheer beauty of its location and the fact that you could hike trails or go to the nude beach and then walk back to your next class...hard to beat.  Now, much has changed at UBC since the late 90's and although they are still smaller, they have really revamped their buildings and made it a beautiful and sought after residential/campus atmosphere that is somewhat isolated from the rest of the Lower Mainland.  The U of A is also beautiful in the summer but, of course, our winters keep us hemmed inside.  Not a problem though as the U of A was designed for a large student body that spends months on end indoors.  The massive buildings, cafeterias, walkways and study areas are all built to accomodate our environment.  And if you ever study over the summer as one fellow reviewer suggested or if you work on campus over the summer, then you're in for a real treat.  Quite beautiful and scenic.

Another point I'd like to bring up is the outstanding job the U of A does in producing the best graduates possible.  When you move away as I did, you also come to appreciate the quality of our graduates when you live in another city long enough.  Everywhere I looked in Vancouver, there were U of A graduates basically running the show - as doctors, dentists, CA's, etc.  It occurred to me that we produce far to many professionals than can be accomodated in Alberta so naturally that is one of our greatest exports - technical and professional know-how.  Many of the friends I went to school with now work all over the world.

Campus life is also great.  There were so many clubs, bars, shops and more.  It was a blast to study at the U of A and then scope out the girls in Rutherford trail or in HUB Mall or SUB.  I remember when you could still smoke in SUB or HUB or in the smokers section of CAB Cafeteria.  And the bar at the top of SUB?  Can't remember it's name but it was good times.  And then the Powerplant was always fun to let off steam or Dinwoodies (I think that was the name) in HUB Mall was rocking on Thursdays, I think.  Good times!  Just as entertaining was the engineering week where they compete in ice sculptures and then have a talent show or the always raunchy Med Show.  I miss those days.

In a nutshell, if you want a world class education, then U of A is right up there with the best of them.  To be honest, if I had a chance to go back in time and do it all over again, I would.  And I would highly recommend it for anyone else.
