Review from Joe H.
I'm not going to lie, when I first went into this hotel and saw the lobby I was kinda expecting the worst; despite the "people love us on yelp" sticker. The lobby is pretty small and there are only 3 floors.
Now seconds after I got into the lobby I was instantly turned around by how nice and accommodating the staff was. The hotel is pretty cool cause it's boutiquey feel is filled with designer rooms each with their own decor (in the heritage tower). I stayed in one and found it really nice as it's not just your run of the mill room.
Despite there being no pool in the building, they do have a business centre. Here's they best thing. You don't have to pay to use it or print things. Seriously, why do people like to gouge you with timed Internet charges...
And if that's not enough guess what was in my room. That's right, a fireplace. All rooms should have one, especially cause Edmonton is a fridged city.
Now most hotels will stop there. No more frills or anything. Here's where Union Bank Inn gains it's stars. In the middle of the day while working in the room I got a knock on the door. I was surprised by a member of the staff offering me a plate of cheese, grapes crackers and white wine. Wow, what a pleasant surprise to brighten the end of my day. This actually happened daily. It was like waiting for Santa in my room.
Now yes there isn't a pool, but the tub in the room is equipped with lie-down snapped grooves to get your bath on. Add in complementary bath salts and you can have your own personal hot tub (height considering).
Lastly, I'm going to mention breakfast. Apparently Union Bank Inn got the memo that continental breakfasts suck. No one likes just cereal and bagels in the mooring with sides of microwaved sausages or cold eggs. With your stay, a complementary sit down a-la-carte breakfast is included. I got a coffee and the eggs Benedict.
Now the breakfast wasn't mind blowing, but it was worlds apart from fruit loops. I did enjoy the meal and would probably have given it about a 3 star alone.
If I am ever back in Edmonton I will stay here without a question. Ps I like presidential suite upgrades. -

I was very impressed.
I've stayed in some nice places on several counties - many cost much more per night - and this is on the short list of nicest rooms. A lot of hotels sink the money into the common areas but UBI put the attention into the rooms. Although doesn't have much else, that's where I spent most of my time and were I most appreciated the attention.
To me it felt like we were staying in a classy B&B (all the way down to getting a very nice gratis al a carte breakfast downstairs at madison's). The front desk was very personable (again a B&B feel). The extras made a difference - I liked the wine and cheese, the cookies and coffee, the bathrobes and spa products in the bathroom, the breakfast at Madison's, beautiful decor in a well laid out room, and comfortable bed.
My only complaint was the internet in my room didn't work - mind you I didn't investigate it or allow it to be corrected.
Overall I would return if I find myself in DT Edmonton again. -

The Union Bank Inn is a boutique downtown hotel with all that implies. The building is beautiful converted from an old bank with windows overlooking Jasper Avenue. The front desk was friendly and always took a moment to chat and ask after our visit. The rooms were a bit small but nicely decorated. A word of warning, make sure you know which wing your room is in as the Heritage wing is decorated in a manner I can only describe as 'grandmotherly'. The bed was comfortable however the lack of Wi-Fi & uncomfortable chairs made working difficult. Parking is very limited with four covered stalls and a small open air parking lot only accessible via alley off a busy downtown street. One touch that was very appreciated, coming back from work to a small plate of cheese, crackers, an orange and small glass of wine placed on the desk every evening.

I went to a wedding at the Union Bank Inn and it was the classiest wedding I've ever been to. I was the Maid of Honour and we rented a room to get ready and relax in on the day of the wedding. It was beautiful, the bed had a luxury mattress and sheets with high thread counts. They had complimentary wine and chocolates waiting for us. I was especially impressed with their service, which was always prompt, classy and courteous. The space that was rented for the ceremony and banquet later was intimate and elegant, and they had lovely natural lighting for pictures, chair covers and an amazing food spread, both for dinner and later midnight snack. This was the best wedding food I'd ever had, bar none! Steak skewers, satay, succulent seafood, spankopita bites and more. The hotel's located right downtown with a top-notch cafe/restaurant for dining, grabbing a night cap. The rates are quite high but if you're part of the wedding party they give you discounted room rates.

History
Established in 1997
The Union Bank of Canada building was originally built in 1911. As years passed the Union Bank Building was taken over by the Royal Bank and Northwest Trust. With so much of Edmonton's Heritage slipping away with new construction, new life was about to be breathed into the Union Bank Building. Taken over by Edmonton Real Estate Broker, Diane Buchanan, Diane drew up her experiences of Inns in her travels to Europe. Her vision is what we see today in the rebirth of the Union Bank Building, to the Union Bank Inn which opened in the summer of 1997. The property was awarded a Historic Designation Award, and our now Heritage Wing houses our 14 uniquely designed guestrooms. With increasing demand, a new addition was added in 1999. The new wing featured 20 business class guestrooms along with our elegant Giverny Ballroom.
We are proud to maintain the history of the Union Bank Building, blending the best of the old and new, while being honoured with the Historic Preservation Award.
