I love this store.  I go a few times a season and it's a lesson in restraint on each occasion.  Like others...I often say, 'if I had more money...'.  The shoe selection is great for men.  It's mind blowing for women.  The staff are friendly and knowledgeable - the total package keeps me coming back.  I used to frequent gravity pope...this is just a friendlier, more intimate space.  My favourite brands; Cydwoq, Fly, Zeha Berlin.

...if I only had more money...

Wow. Walking into a shoe store and having the rich smell of genuine leather waft over me is becoming something of a rarity in the generation of the synthetic. But in this place - oh yeah, you get a whiff of that special little somethin' somethin'. The shoes at this little boutique shop are definately investment pieces - they ain't cheap. But the quality is sooo there.

The selection is limited, but very well chosen. They carry brands that can't be found elsewhere in Vancouver, and have an especially great selection of men's shoes that I intend to convince the boyfriend to invest in someday.

My three stars are purely for reasons of taste. I have to confess I'm a little bit of a flashy shoe girl and these are a tad on the demure side for my particular tastes.

But if you are looking for a genuinely well crafted pair of stylish, sleek shoes - this is your mecca. Enjoy!

I knew what I was getting myself into the first time I entered the doors of Umeboshi. My soft spot for luxuriously well-made and deliciously well-designed leather shoes predicates the whole world of trouble I was about to get myself into. But man, is it worth it.

Carrying brands that can't be found elsewhere in Vancouver, the serious selection they have at Umeboshi could blow a girl's bank if she weren't careful. Ah, but at least now when the smells of leather call me back again and again I know that I can just walk in for a quick look. And even if I do happen to cave, these bad boys are investment pieces, right?

    ...right??

Oh, such pretty pretty shoes! I especially love the smell of leather as soon as you open the door to this quaint Main St. shop. They have a nice selection of shoes for the gals, but I found their mens section to be particularly stunning.

Umeboshi stocks a selection of high-quality footwear, much of which is imported from Europe. I'm afraid the price-tag ain't cheap, but the shoes  here are the type of investment pieces that you'd keep for decades and get re-soled by a shoe cobbler when needed. The shoes that I was looking at ranged in price from $200-$425. Yes, that made me cry a little, but given the quality, the shoes here are worth saving your pennies for.

Hold on to your wallets ladies (and gents)!  This place is like a blackhole for shoe lovers.  I've wandered in here many times to "just look" and walked away with shoes and boots.  Over the last year I've learned to tame my wild shoe shopping ways, but the last two times I've been here with a friend, I've convinced her to buy the shoes/boots she's tried on.  Oops! :)

There's a fabulous selection of boots and shoes from Chie Mihara, to Frye, to Coclico. What I also really love is that there are almost always marked down shoes here.  In fact, I've never even bought a pair here that *wasn't* on sale (see? I'm being good!). Eat your heart out Gravity Pope.

There've been a couple pieces here I've had to put on layaway (you can do layaway! Thank goodness!) or purchase straight out in case of sale shoes. Yes, the price tag is high, but the pieces are worth investing in. the staff is super friendly and really knows their stuff. They won't flatter you into a sale, I told one of the girls I was thinking of getting a pair of Zeha Berlins to work in and she warned me about factors destroying the leather's colour. They'll give you discount cards for Both Feet on Main, the best cobblers, if you need to get rubber soles put on as well!

I feel remiss in not having already reviewed Umeboshi. It's usually one of my first stops whenever I stroll along the main.

From its cornered storefront, it gleams brightly with newly shined leathers and bejeweled partywear. Amongst the perennially popular Repettos, Faryl Robins and Chie Maharas are less known gems like Oz by Tashkent and Devotte.

Beautiful footwear aside, the shops cool vibe will have you lingering and clamoring for more.

We definitely need more shoe stores like this.  However, I think the local shoe stores are still too limited compared to other cities. Umeboshi tries to supply the best in modern shoes, but unfortunately size and stock constraints make it difficult to find a suitable pair of shoes to buy on most visits. Things may be different on the women's side of the store, but for men, it's limited. It's really turned into a quick browse and dash for me. I've bought a few pairs over the years, but it's rare that I find a pair that I like and in my size. The name brands are good, the style is good. Price aside, I'd prefer stores that had more to offer.

    Beautiful shoes!

Unfortunately, when I went in, they had nothing over size 8, and mostly only tiny sizes. When you are size 10 that is a big red flag. I will keep going to Gravity Pope and the other quality stores in town if I feel the need to get something gorgeous. For instance, I could go to Seattle or Portland and check out the large selection of El NaturaLista and other fantastic european brands that suit larger feet that want to look nice there... or on Commercial Drive or Granville Street.

I am already debating between a pair of Fly London boots from Umeboshi or bill payments this month...okay, okay I won't put myself into debilitating debt for boots but boy am I tempted!  Along with a selection of seriously fine boots, Umeboshi carries some fabulous and unique shoes for men and women from such rad brands as Giraudon, Coclico, Argila, Kenneth Cole Reaction and Kaju.  They also carry some cute accessories such as hats, bags and stockings.

If I had a $1000/month shoe budget, I'd blow it at Umeboshi on a couple of pairs of hot boots that I met today. Unfortunately, my shoe budget is only a small percentage of that (I won't tell you just how small). Luckily, visiting the eye candy free. I also spotted some great purses at Umeboshi. I'll definitely be back to visit again soon.

I had heard that umeboshi was a good place to go for shoes, but what I didn't know is that they would have such a selection in my size - 5!  So, the small-footed can rejoice; no need for insoles if you shop here because they might actually have shoes to fit all the little Cinderellas in Vancouver.  They carry a funky selection of casuals, some dressy shoes and lots of groovy boots by brands like Camper, Blowfish and Kenneth Cole.  The shoes here can be a bit pricey, but they do tend to have some pretty unique foot ware, and it's such a nice, contained store that even the shoe shopping experience is pleasant here.  I'd highly recommend it for the shoe lover, and especially for the petite-footed shoe lover.  Hurray!
