Review from Stephene C.
Vancouver, BC
I can't tell you how often I've walked by this place on my way to the beach or to the many other great restaurants that inhabit this corridor; and everytime I walk by I always wonder what it's like on the inside, how their food tastes and what their service is like. In the past I guess I was just too scared that I would be disappointed. Finally, a friend and myself decide to try this place out and what a surprise it was.
When you first walk in you get what i would equate as the homely Ukrainian experience, im pretty sure this place is family owned and run. Whom i'm guessing is the son, greeted us at the door and sat us down very quickly. It wasn't a busy day, so that meant we got undivided attention and service.
I was fairly hungry and wanted to try everything, but that would probably have been detrimental to my waistline as well as my pocket book, so luckily they had a lunch special which included a cabbage roll and 5 perogies of your choice of filling for only 7 bucks. I thought the one cabbage roll would not have been enough so i orderd an extra one for 4 bucks. Boy was i wrong, their cabbage rolls are ginormous! After demollishing the first cabbage roll and the five perogies which included potatoe and cheese, onion, and sour crout, i was stuffed like a cabbage roll, literally! It was tough going trying to cram one more roll down my gulet. Although i was a little glutinous on that day, the food tasted amazing. I wish i had had the courage to enter this restaurant a long time ago. This definitely teaches me not to judge a book by its cover, you can always be pleasantly surprised if you always just give something a chance.
I will definitely be coming back again to try more of their homely food :) -
Review from Willy K.
Very cool place! I love pierogies, borsch, and the sour cream goodness so I had to try a genuine place. We went at lunch at ordered borsch, the three different kinds of main meals with the pierogies: cabbage rolls, meatloaf, and sausage, and the Ukrainian iced tea. Pierogies were great! I had ones with the onion, which I preferred over the cheddar cheese kind. The little bits of unmashed potatoes? Yum! Of the three different lunch menus, I'd say the cabbage rolls were the best. The meatloaf was alright, but it was lacking something. The Russian borsch was amazing. I wasn't so sure what to expect of the iced tea, but it was pretty nice. I'm sure it doesn't actually have alcohol, but it has that flavour.
The place is quaint and has that mom-and-pop feel. Not the cheapest of places, but for what you get, it's definitely worth it. I'd give 5 stars if it weren't for the really slow service (it took so long until the guy took our order), but I strongly recommend this place. -

I grew up in Eastern Europe so this kinda stuff is in abundance over there. But you don't eat it in the restaurants, you eat it at home, like everyday, like my grandma used to make a giant pot of cabbage rolls and perogies. It was nothing special back then. It was almost revolting how much we ate it 'cabbage rolls again?!?! I want pizza!'
But oh boy, how I appreciate it now.'No more pizza pleaseeeeee. God have mercy' If only my grandma could ship me a pot filled with cabbage rolls!
Anyhow, all that said, I can't give this place more than 3 stars. Grandma, nothing comes close to your cooking! But if you'd like an authentic ukrainian place, definitely check this place out. Food is homemade and generous in portion. I loved sauerkraut perogies, and veggie cabbage rolls were pretty good too (I went with my vegetarian friend, so hence the veggie ones).
Service is very charming. Our server (probably the owner as well) overheard me how I love pickles and brought me more! He also joked around with us throughout our meal. Interior is definitely a hole in the wall, but service is very hospitable, which I honestly didn't expect.
Cabbage in every shape and form, sour cream, and pickles. Ahhh, I am 7 years old again... -

My boyfriend is Ukrainian and without his family living in Vancouver we've had to find somewhere to celebrate the Ukrainian holidays. Luckily Ukrainian village is close to us and offers all of our Ukrainian favorites. We shared the vegetarian and meat Ukrainian Dinner, with cabbage rolls, perogies, sausage, and coleslaw. They serve hearty portions and you know you're eating home cooking. I loved the meat-filled cabbage rolls. The service has always been good, but never overly friendly. We'll be back for the next holiday!

As I spend most of my time in the West End and Denman Street in particular on many occasions, I pass by Ukrainian Village all the time. Recently, I decided to drop in and see what it is like. Having traveled to Ukraine (Odessa, Kiev) on two occasions, I like to think that I know what traditional Ukrainian food tastes like. The menu doesn't offer a huge selection, but the menu with its pictures is useful if you aren't familiar with Eastern European food to begin with. Most recently, I ordered the borsch and the Ukrainian Dinner. The borsch was very good for a starter, but the Ukrainian dinner was simply fabulous with the meatloaf, the sausage and the rolls. I might also add that the portions are quite filling too which is good considering the price. Overall, a nice restaurant with a friendly staff and solid food to boot. If you are in the mood for Eastern European food, it would have to be my top pick in Vancouver.

Delicious, melt in your mouth perogies. (yelp thinks that's a spelling mistake and should be spelled peroxide... no yelp)
Service was 5 stars and it's not even close. I get happy when I go somewhere new and see the owner mixing it up with his regulars.
I am reluctantly docking them a star for a couple things: putting too much fresh dill in their Russian borscht... it was too much and overpowered the taste of the tomato and onions; and not having one of their soups on the menu that I was interested in trying.
I'll definitely be back for more perogies. -

We had our Christmas dinner here and was it ever good! I was expecting to be pleasantly surprised, but not this much. The food here is amazing for such a little place. Try the Schnitzel, the Strudel and the grandma salad for a quick taste of Ukrainian Village. One thing's for sure, we are going to be making a lot of trips back here!

I have no experience with Ukrainian food, but I love this cosy, little place for a frankfurter plate lunch! Affordable and scrumptious!
Have to be honest, my 5-star review is based on the very comfortable atmosphere, down-to-earth staff (literally, 1 waiter/waitress... it's that small!) and the carefully prepared meals! Presentation is very home-styled; however, there is little room for complaints. I haven't been for the dinner menu, so I can't say yet. Not a fan of cabbage rolls... I know it's big in Ukrainian cuisine... Maybe this place makes good ones? I can't tell u! -

If I had never had my grandmother's cabbage rolls, or used that decade's old recipe in my own kitchen, I would likely bestow another star Ukrainian Village. Actually, I would still 5 star it had it not been for the price tags. Perogies and cabbage rolls for $18 seemed steep. But my bias comes into play when I note I can cook this stuff for a quarter of the cost.
The staff is lean but friendly and, provided you arrive and order before any large groups you'll be served quickly. But do take this warning - if you are expecting anything more than a Eastern European hole-in-the-wall you'll be disappointed. The tables are a bit sticky, the floors squeak, the cutlery is flimsy. It's almost classic diner meets a slightly dingy grandam's kitchen.
But if you get a look at the jade, you'll be impressed. They've been there for ages!Listed in: Favourite Vancouver…, Dedicated to my Russian Nana.

Seeing as She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed is Russian with a Ukrainian mother, it was inevitable that we ended up here eventually. The 10% off coupon in the local paper helped (more on that later).
Having experienced the highs and lows of Slavic dining while in Russia, I was perfectly happy with the casual ambiance of this restaurant. We settled right in with some beer and ordered some pickled herring and olivier salad plus some kharcho - a Georgian soup. Very tasty except that the kharcho (a rich lamb soup) was not the real thing by any stretch of the imagination and so was disappointing. After that came pelmeni for her and the Ukrainian dinner for me. As reported by others, the portions are generous, especially mine. If you love this type of food, as I do, then you will be very happy.
Having consumed as much as humanly possible and considering it time to start rolling ourselves home, the matter of the bill arose. Producing my 10% off coupon elicited trepidation on the part of our attentive waiter who said "I'll ask". He returned within minutes with the bill and 10% taken off only my entrée. I asked for the owner who proceeded to tell me that, despite there being no limitations on the coupon, it really only was valid for one entrée. After giving him a introductory talk about fraud, his wife saved his bacon and snatched away the bill and replaced it with one that had 10% off the entirety.
So the 4 stars is for the food and excellent service from the waiter.
Minus 5 stars for the owner. -

Happily Surprised! Seriously good stuff...
In Vancouver for a few days and decided to explore some foods that you might not get a chance to eat everyday after hearing someone walking by outside saying this place was delicious.
The restuarant itself is a small, quaint type of place that lets you feel the authenticity of it all. I ordered a plate of potato and onion perogies and a Russian beer called Balitka 5 to start. The beer was great and the perogies were succulent. They come with a side of sour cream to use as well. I was impressed by the handmade perogies and decided to order a main course.
I ended up choosing the Chicken Schnitzel, a huge plate of 2 very large chicken breasts with gravy and mashed potatoes. It was excellent! I was thoroughly full after my meal, it really was delicious and I was happy that I chose this place. My girlfriend ordered the lamb chops and they were cooked to perfection as well. Usually I don't order lamb because unless the restuarant cooks it properly it's not very good, but this place definitely
has it down.
Highly recommended if you're into something that you haven't tried before and want to eat somewhere with a nice "mom and pop" feel. Good service, even better food. Do yourself a favor and check this place out! -
Review from Allen W.
I love a good family run restaurant and finally ventured into Ukrainian Village recently for a filling dinner of perogies, cabbage rolls, garlic sausage and schnitzel.
Restaurant is small but charming, with one or two friendly staff serving the tables. Prices are a bit steep given that almost everything is made of potatoes and cabbage. I think most plates are around $15-18
Food came out quickly and had the handmade flavour/texture that I love. Everything tasted delicious. The best cabbage rolls I ever had -- the meat filling was bountiful, tender, and moist.
You'll walk away very full ... very very full since the food is heavy. But, you'll feel like you had a homemade meal made with love by your grandmother. -
Review from Edward L.
Had a chance to try some takeout perogies.
Normally the perogies I've tried were lumpy, with chunks of potatoes mixed into the mashed bits (ie a bad mashing job). This place actually does them right. It was actually borderline gooey on the inside. Oh wow.
The fact my Polish friend approves of them here speaks volumes.
Will definitely be back to try some more flavours. -

AMAZING! Being part Ukrainian, I grew up on perogies and cabbage rolls and this place is fab. I have to say, I think that they might be better than my Mom's and my Baba's (Sorry Mom and Baba!) Between my boyfriend and I we have tried quite a few things on the menu. Absolutely everything is fantastic!!
The restaurant itself is very quaint, service is always great, the portions are huge, prices reasonable and you can buy perogies to go frozen! This is a huge bonus, I always pick some up for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving dinners etc.
I have brought every member of my family here when they come visit and everyone has loved it. So glad this place is in my neighborhood :) -

I think this place is good, but leaning more towards "ok" than "great." I was here a few days ago and ordered the Ukrainian Plate. For nearly $20 I thought it was extremely overpriced for what you got on your plate. I'd probably give this place a higher rating if it wasn't so overpriced. I'm Polish, and my mother is an amazing cook, so I was interested to see what the food would be like. The cabbage rolls were great! They get a "5". The perogies? Meh. Very disappointing. I had made cheap frozen perogies a week prior and they had tasted better. Bland. The sausage was nice, but tasted like a boiled Ukrainian sausage you can pick up at any deli. Maybe I was expecting to be a little more blown away for $20.
A friend got the red pepper chicken, and it tasted like it was made in a coconut cream sauce, but was fairly tasty. The husband got the lamb shank and enjoyed his meal - though for the price you got more bone than lamb.
Overall, I'd recommend this place if you want to experience some fairly authentic eastern euro cuisine. But be prepared, it's not cheap! -

Its very hard to find a really good joint which serves good food from your grandmother's kitchen, good service and has that atmosphere that you feel like you've just walked into someone's living room. Its a really little cozy place. The service is great, prices are reasonable and the cabbage rolls were awesome. My other half who is a massive fan of schnitzel (which was so big that it arrived the same size as the plate!) said it's probably one of the best he's tried. It was so good that we asked for more sauce and gravy on the side so we could drench our meals in it. Definitely be back.

Cabbage Rolls, Perogies, some of my favorites.
We love the Ukrainian Village! We've been begging Vladimir and Tatjana to move the restaurant to Burnaby so we can dine here more often. It's a cozy little place near the corner of Robson and Denman.
I usually have the Ukrainian Dinner -- for around $20.00 it's a great value. 2 Cabbage Rolls, 6 Perogies, Ukrainian Sausage, and salad. It's a meal with enough food for two, you'll definitely leave stuffed.
I've never had anything here that isn't good and nothing canned -- she makes it all. The servings are always more than you will likely be able to eat, and the prices are reasonable (not cheap, but based on what you get definitely worth it). The owners are thrilled to have you there, and will do their best to ensure you have an enjoyable experience.
The restaurant is not large. If you are going with a large group, there is only one table with capacity for more than 5 people, so call ahead if you need to bring in a larger group so they can accomodate you.
If you like Ukrainian food, this is one of the best I've found. -

I was in this restaurant on my birthday. We started with soup called borsch, which was really yummy. Then we had perogies, they were really the best. Filled up with lots of tasty cheese, and huge portion.
I enjoyed.
But then, when it came to payment...My husband showed his American Express card and they said they did not accept such card (he had never problem with his card before) and since his second Master Card was just expired and he was waiting for new one, he had to go out to rainy weather and try to find ATM. I waited inside at least twenty minutes. He returned, said he tried three different ATMs and no result. So after that guy said :"OK, we take Am.Express as well..." It quite pissed me off even more because it was my birthday.
After that we have decided with my husband that we don't go there any more.
But if you want to try yummy food, that's the right place :) -

Ukrainian comfort and a neat, cozy space with a lot of nice color. Some of the dishes are a little unremarkable, but good Ukrainian food is much more about comfort and warmth and familiarity than being remarkable per se. The food is lovingly-prepared and a shocking amount of it is homemade. I've only been in Autumn, but one of the women working there suggested to me that they might have fresh Kvass in summer sometimes, which would far and away make it worth going by!
It can get crowded and sometimes has an impressive wait for a table. -

I love this restaurant. The decor is old, but it works with this restaurant. It would be weird if it was minimalistic...lol. The food is great too. Almost as good as my grandmother's. The service is also efficient and friendly.

We just got back from this place so this review is hot off the presses!
I had the Ukrainian dinner which comprised of two cabbage rolls, 6 boiled cheddar and potato perogies (otherwise stuffed with potato & onion, or sour kraut), a six inch portion of boiled kielbasa, some shredded pickled beets, and pickled coleslaw ($20CDN).
The wife had the chicken paprika which comprised of three pan fried skinless chicken thighs, and five pieces of light European bread smothered in a light cream paprika sauce ($15.00CDN).
We got the Ukrainian borscht soup (vegetarian beet soup with a large dollop of cream) to share ($5CDN).
Wasn't too too bad for 50 bucks.
It wasn't the perfect dinner that would be expected from my mom's cooking but all in all Ukrainian / Russian Cuisine thrives here.
I'm used to spotzil with my chicken paprikash, but the sauce was quite good.
Tonight is a Thursday night so I backed off from having a cocktail. I noticed they have a good selection of wine and beer that includes a temptation of authentic brand names from the Ukraine.
The only thing that slightly threw me was getting two cans of pop with straws in them rather than compliments of a glass with ice, or even an offer of ice water.
So been there -- let me know the dish you like!
Try this place out if you miss European style food and let's compare notes on the food. -

Wow. Hidden gem. Great change from the endless masses of Asian food. I got potato salad, schnitzel, cabbage rolls, perogies, borsch. At first glance seems expensive but the portions are huge and very filling. Great service. Will come back.

This little restaurant is decorated in blues and yellows, the traditional Ukrainian colours. It is like an old babushka's home, with wood tables, and red and white checkered tablecloths. It's small and cozy, but serves giant portions. What's amazing here? Cabbage rolls, the pork wiener schnitzel, homemade soups like one with pickles and jam and borstch, cabbage sides, chicken paprika, beef stronganoff and duck. I shared a platter of perogies and sausages and cabbage rolls and got a side dish of pickles for under $15. It was so hearty. The cabbage rolls were nicely seasoned and well cooked, they had a special gravy sauce that was interesting. The sausages could have been more spicy. The perogies were fried with onions and were really soft and gooey. If you need a good filling in the belly, go here.

I've been craving good homemade Ukrainian food and just recently discovered this little restaurant on Denman near Robson.
Very small and cozy. Waitress was nice, unobtrusive and quite efficient.
There were already a few people eating by the time we arrived for lunch. The tiny place filled up (no lineups, but almost all the tables were occupied).
I ordered the Ukrainian borscht to start ,and as I was eating, I thought, "this is filling. Am I going to have room for the meal I ordered ?"
It was good. Better than any other borscht I have tried in any Lower Mainland restaurant or (shudder) bought from a store.
Next I ate the 5 boiled perogies and meatloaf (one of the lunch specials). Yum. Definitely homemade and not (more shuddering) Cheemos.
There are 3 types of perogies you can order--potato and onion, potato and cheese or sauerkraut. All tasty. I drank all of this down with "Ukrainian Iced Tea". This was one tasty drink. Perfect for a warm and sunny Vancouver day. The waitress came around to refill my glass and the glasses of the people at the next table. I asked her what was in it. It was very good. She said they added some house wine to the tea. OH! No wonder I was feeling good (-:
I was so stuffed I didn't have room for dessert. This is not normal. I ALWAYS have room for dessert. But, hey, I'd forgotten how satisfying and filling Ukrainian food can be.... and all for under $16.
Summary? Unremarkable, but like Juli M. says, "Ukrainian food is much more about comfort and warmth and familiarity". I am definitely feeling comfy (my pants that is, after all those perogies!) and feeling very warm (THANKYOU UKRAINIAN Iced Tea!) and familiarity (reminds of my prairie hometown).
I may not be trekking out here every week, but next time I get that craving for a decent perogy and borscht, I'll return to the Ukrainian Village.
